Marcus Freeman updates Jeremiyah Love’s status following win over Indiana

Not the best news about Love, but not the worst

(This story was updated to add new information.)

Notre Dame football defeated the Indiana Hoosiers 27-17 in the first-round of the College Football Playoff, but it wasn’t all rosy for the Irish.

They once again saw multiple players go down with injuries, and following the game, head coach Marcus Freeman updated the status on a very important piece of the Irish offense. Star running back [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] was coming off an injury, and his coach told that us that he isn’t 100%, but didn’t look like it on his long touchdown run.

As the best player on offense for Notre Dame, they’ll need him to be as healthy as possible as they prepare for the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl. With over a week before they face each other on New Year’s Day, hopefully that is plenty of time for Love to get healthy enough to be as explosive as he was against Indiana.

There was another significant injury, as defensive lineman Rylie Mills went down in the third quarter with a bad knee following a sack. Freeman told Scott Van Pelt that “it sounds like it’s not season-ending,” but didn’t go into more details aside from that. There is hope that Mills could be ready for the Bulldogs.

Notre Dame vs. Indiana: First-Quarter Analysis

What are your thoughts after a quarter?

The College Football Playoff is underway, and it couldn’t have gotten off to a crazier start. Whether Notre Dame or Indiana wins, the victory will have to be earned.

After the Irish’s defense started the game with a three-and-out, [autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag]’s first pass was deflected at the line and ended up in the hands of the Hoosiers’ D’Angelo Ponds. But just when it seemed like the Hoosiers were going to score the game’s first points with a short field, [autotag]Xavier Watts[/autotag] got his own interception of Kurtis Rourke near the end zone.

Even with the Irish backed up to their own 2-yard line, it proved not to matter for [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag], who promptly tied a program record with a 98-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage. Just like that, it was the Irish on the scoreboard first.

The Hoosiers put together a nice drive on their next possession but ultimately were forced to punt again. The Irish didn’t have another explosive play on their ensuing drive, but it was far more calculated, and it resulted in one first down after another. They were in the red zone by the time the clock hit zero on the game’s first 15 minutes.

Breathe easy, folks. There’s a lot of football ahead.

Notre Dame College Football Playoff round one highlight: Jeremiyah Love goes long

Jeremiyah Love opens the scoring for Notre Dame against Indiana.

Once again, Notre Dame has gotten a huge play from running back [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag].

Just one play after a [autotag]Xavier Watts[/autotag] interception got the ball back for the Fighting Irish against the Indiana Hoosiers, Love took a handoff 98 yards to the house.

Love has now scored a rushing touchdown in all 13 games this season.

The touchdown run opened the game’s scoring and gave the Irish a 7-0 lead in the first round of the newly expanded College Football Playoff.

Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love opens CFP tournament scoring with 98-yard run

Notre Dame with a huge scoring play against Indiana

That was fast because Jeremiyah Love is speedy.

Notre Dame’s running back took a handoff four minutes or so into Friday’s CFP game with Indiana and was gone.

The 98-yard touchdown run equaled the school record by Josh Adams and gave the Fighting Irish a 7-0 lead after the PAT against Indiana.

That is one CFP record that could last a long time.

Is Howard Cross III playing today? Injury updates for Notre Dame DL

TEAMA POSITION PLAYER NAME (ex Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa) is dealing with a [BLANK] injury. Here are the latest updates.

(This story was updated to add new information.)

Notre Dame Fighting Irish defensive lineman [autotag]Howard Cross III[/autotag] is available and will play as No. 3 Notre Dame takes on the No. 9 Indiana Hoosiers in a first-round College Football Playoff game in South Bend.

Fighting Irish running back [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] is also available and will play.

Update: Notre Dame confirms that all student-athletes listed on the two-deep this week are available to play tonight.

Howard Cross III injury update

After missing three games with a high ankle sprain, Cross will be back against Indiana.

“Howard Cross is an excellent football player,” Notre Dame head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] said. “When you don’t have him, he’s missed.”

How long will Howard Cross III be out?

As noted above, Cross is back after missing three games. However, these players are out for the Irish: Linebacker [autotag]Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa[/autotag] (right knee), linebacker [autotag]Bodie Kahoun[/autotag] (lower leg), and wide receiver [autotag]KK Smith[/autotag] (clavicle).

Notre Dame defensive line depth chart

With Cross back, the Irish should be ready to rock. Rylie Mills and Donovan Hinish had stepped up in Cross’s absence, and if Cross isn’t bothered by any lingering effects from the injury, the Irish defense will be in good shape.

Notre Dame running back leaves USC game with ankle injury

Hope it’s nothing serious.

Notre Dame running back [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] was having a typical day against USC. He completed the goal of scoring in every game during the regular season while tallying 99 yards on 13 carries.

However, that’s where Love’s accomplishments for the day will stand because Love was ruled out for the rest of the game with an ankle injury. He attempted to work through it on the sidelines, but it soon became clear that he was not right enough to continue. [autotag]Jadarian Price[/autotag] handled the bulk of the rushes after that.

Losing Love ahead of the College Football Playoff would be a tremendous blow to the Irish’s offense. He easily has been that unit’s best player this season, and it would be significantly hampered moving forward. That is not where you want to be when the competition level is about to ramp up and with higher stakes.

Hopefully, Love will be back for whatever game the Irish play next.

Notre Dame Week 14 highlight: Jadarian Price gives Jeremiyah Love a break, races to the house

Notre Dame gets an early second-half touchdown from Jadarian Price.

After Notre Dame running back [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] had a relatively routine 5-yard run, he was pulled from the game to get a breather. Fellow running back [autotag]Jadarian Price[/autotag] got the call on the next play and took it 36 yards to the house.

This all came on No. 5 Notre Dame’s first drive of the second half at USC.

The run ended a 6-play, 75-yard drive that took 2:22 off of the clock.

Love and Price have been a potent 1-2 punch in the Fighting Irish backfield all season, and once again the two have combined to do some damage.

Notre Dame Week 14 highlight: Riley Leonard hits Eli Raridon following another Jeremiyah Love leap

Notre Dame scores after another Love leap.

Notre Dame’s final drive of the first half against USC was a bit of nail-biter.

The No. 5 Fighting Irish had to convert a fourth-and-one — just barely — before quarterback [autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag] found [autotag]Eli Raridon[/autotag] for a 12-yard touchdown reception. It was Leonard who just barely got the first down on a quarterback run.

The pass followed another long run by RB [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] — one that included yet another hurdle of a defender. That one was good for 20 yards.

Love’s leap will make more than a few highlight films, but Leonard’s pass to Riordan was what put points on the board.

Notre Dame Week 14 highlight: Jeremiyah Love opens up the scoring at USC, extends touchdown streak

Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love has a record-breaking TD against USC.

No. 5 Notre Dame is playing rival USC in Southern California with a playoff berth — and maybe a first-round playoff game at home — on the line.

The Fighting Irish took over after stopping a promising Trojans’ drive and put together an efficient march of their own — one that ended with running back [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] fighting for extra yards and a touchdown.

Love had several big, punishing runs on the drive, and quarterback [autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag] was also effective with his legs and some quick, easy passes.

Love’s 1-yard touchdown run, which capped off a 13-play, 72-yard drive that chewed 7:13 off the clock, was a record-setter. He now has had a rushing touchdown in 12 straight games — which is a Notre Dame record.

Wayne Bullock held the previous mark, with 11.

Notre Dame statistical leaders through 11 games

Who leads the Irish heading into the final regular-season contest?

Notre Dame has its fate in its own hands for the College Football Playoff. All it needs to do is defeat USC, and a first-round game at Notre Dame Stadium appears to be a certainty. Who would have thought the Irish would be in such a good position after the loss to Northern Illinois threatened to derail their season early?

The Irish can’t afford to get complacent though. The Trojans have not had a great season, but dealing the Irish a loss that could threaten their playoff chances would make up for everything that has gone wrong for them. That’s why the Irish will need to prepare for them like they would for any ranked team, and the talent they have should allow them to emerge victorious.

Here are the major statistical leaders the Irish are taking into their regular-season finale. Not all of them will be available, but they’re fun to see nonetheless:
