Notre Dame vs. Virginia: Third-Quarter Analysis

It’s all academic from here.

(This story has been updated with a new photo.)

Based on how dominant Notre Dame was in the first half against Virginia, it was somewhat understandable if they chose to relax. That was evidenced by the fact that the first drive of the second half ended with [autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag] throwing an interception. But the third quarter still ended with a 35-7 Irish lead.

The Cavaliers opted to replace Anthony Colandrea with backup quarterback Tony Muskett, whose first series was a three-and-out. [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] then had a 76-yard touchdown run on the Irish’s next drive. However, Muskett responded with an 18-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-1 to get the Cavaliers on the scoreboard. Both scoring drives last less than two minutes.

When the third quarter ran out, the Irish were on the verge of putting more points on the scoreboard with a third-and-goal. With a huge lead though, they were in no hurry to find the end zone again. It seems inevitable though.

Notre Dame Week 12 highlight: Jeremiyah Love takes it to the house for the second time

Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love has two touchdowns today.

Running back [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] had a short touchdown run early in the first half for the No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish against the Virginia Cavaliers.

So it figures his second touchdown of the day would be of the much longer variety.

Love’s first touchdown run was just four yards. His second? A 76-yarder that capped off a 3-play, 88-yard drive that took 1:21 off the clock.

At the time, the run with 9:38 to go in the third quarter gave the Irish a 35-0 lead. Virginia has since finally gotten on the board to make it 35-7.

Notre Dame vs. Virginia: First-Quarter Analysis

Decent start for the Irish.

Notre Dame appeared to begin its Senior Day game against Virginia in exciting fashion. Former Irish running back-turned-receiver Chris Tyree muffed the opening kickoff, and the ball was scooped up by [autotag]Max Hurleman[/autotag], who ran it into the end zone. However, the ball could not be advanced because there was a muff instead of a fumble on the play.

The Irish instead had to start the game at the Cavaliers 25-yard line, but the setback proved to be temporary. The Cavaliers appeared to force a three-and-out, but a roughing the passer penalty gave the Irish a fresh set of downs from the 4. [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] promptly scored, and the Irish had a 7-0 lead.

The first-quarter scoring halted after that though as both teams mainly had a bunch of three-and-outs with the Cavaliers turning the ball over on downs somewhere in between. At least some of that though can be attributed to the Irish’s dominant defense. They’ll need that to justify the College Football Playoff committee’s decision to include them in the rankings so far.

Notre Dame Week 12 highlight: Jeremiyah Love keeps TD streak alive

Jeremiyah Love keeps his streak alive.

Who else but [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag]?

The Notre Dame running back now has at least one touchdown in 10 straight games.

Love’s score came after the No. 8 Fighting Irish got a short field thanks to a mistake by the visiting Virginia Cavaliers.

Love ran the ball in from four yards out to cap a 4-play, 25-yard drive that took 1:52 off the clock.

Notre Dame will be looking to avoid the upset on Senior Day. So far, so good.

Notre Dame vs. Florida State: Fourth-Quarter Analysis

A perfect end to a perfect night.

It officially became a blowout when [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] called off the dogs. But even that wasn’t enough to keep Notre Dame from continuing to dominate as a curtain call to a 52-3 victory over Florida State.

[autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag] completed a 26-yard pass to Jaden Greathouse, then handed it off to [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] for a 1-yard touchdown run.

When the Irish’s offense retook the field after another Seminoles three-and-out, which featured a [autotag]Junior Tuihalamaka[/autotag] sack, [autotag]Steve Angeli[/autotag] took over at quarterback. Even he got in on the scoring action when he threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to [autotag]Deion Colzie[/autotag].

As a final humiliation for the Seminoles, [autotag]Luke Talich[/autotag] intercepted Brock Glenn and returned the ball 79 yards for the game’s final touchdown and the first score of his collegiate career with 1:23 remaining. It was so unnecessary and yet so beautiful to see, especially with the Seminoles on the verge of scoring for the first time since the first quarter.

Irish fans were right to be cautious about this game because it had all the makings of a trap game. But the Seminoles came in with an offense that proved to be as putrid as advertised, and they now have the most losses of any preseason top-10 team.

Meanwhile, the Irish still have a College Football Playoff dream to chase. They have all the makings of a team that belongs there.

Notre Dame Week 9 highlight: Jeremiyah Love does it again

Jeremiyah Love has two touchdowns in the first half against Navy.

No. 12 Notre Dame is taking advantage of mistakes made by No. 24 Navy.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish running back Jeremiyah Love capped off a 9-play, 40-yard drive that took 4:57 off the clock with a 2-yard touchdown run. The drive followed a muffed punt by the Navy Midshipmen.

Navy is trying to avoid letting this game slip away, while Notre Dame continues to build a lead as the Fighting Irish need a win to remain playoff contention.

Navy’s offense can give opposing defenses fits, and the Midshipmen have had a few explosive chunk plays against the Irish, but Navy turnovers have allowed the Fighting Irish to control the game.

Notre Dame Week 9 highlight: Jeremiyah Love takes it 64 yards to the house

Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love gets the momentum back.

Jeremiyah Love remains one of No. 12 Notre Dame’s biggest offensive weapons.

Look at his 64-yard touchdown run against No. 24 Navy for the latest example.

Love broke lose and took it to the house on the third play of a drive that would take 75 yards and 1:03 off the clock.

It made for a nice statement by the Notre Dame offense after the Fighting Irish defense allowed its longest run of the season. Navy quarterback Blake Horvath had a 47-yard touchdown run, giving Navy life after the Irish missed a field goal.

With the Irish lead cut to 14-7, Love’s run put Notre Dame back up by two touchdowns.

Notre Dame Week 8 highlight: Fake punt keeps key drive alive against Georgia Tech

Notre Dame gets a big fake-punt run from Jeremiyah Love.

Fake punts are almost always a risky proposition, but the Notre Dame Fighting Irish pulled one off against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The successful fake kept an important late-game drive alive for the Fighting Irish.

It’s officially listed as a pass from linebacker Tommy Powlus to running back Jeremiyah Love for a loss of 8 yards and a first down — perhaps the online live score needs some tweaking. Either way, Love did carry the ball for a first down on a reverse.

Unfortunately the Irish were unable to turn the special-teams trickery into a game-sealing touchdown, but a made 42-yard field goal by backup kicker Zac Yoakam at least made it a three-score game.

Jeremiyah Love had a key fake-punt run late in the game for Notre Dame.
