Two Colorado linebackers opting to redshirt remainder of season

Two veteran linebackers have asked Coach Prime to redshirt the rest of the season

Lost in the chaos of Colorado football’s dominant Week 5 win over UCF, head coach Deion Sanders revealed Saturday that veteran linebackers Trevor Woods and Jeremiah Brown have asked to redshirt the remainder of this season.

Woods and Brown appeared in each of Colorado’s first four games before sitting out against UCF, meaning the two seniors will remain sidelined for the rest of the season to maintain a year of eligibility.

Woods, who has been with the Buffs since 2021, moved from safety to linebacker midway through last season. After recording 56 total tackles and two interceptions in 2023, he’ll finish this year with 14 total tackles, including one TFL.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Brown spent his first two college seasons playing for Coach Prime at Jackson State before following him to Boulder. Brown recorded 11 total tackles last season and six this year.

Moving forward, expect LaVonta Bentley and Nikhai Hill-Green to continue leading the charge at inside linebacker. Jaylen Wester, the younger brother of Colorado wide receiver LaJohntay Wester, could also see time following an impressive showing against UCF.

Colorado linebackers Nikhai Hill-Green, Jeremiah Brown pushing for starting jobs

Two dark horse players are pushing for starting jobs at linebacker

Earlier this month, the Colorado Buffaloes seemed to be set at inside linebacker with LaVonta Bentley and Trevor Woods returning from last season’s defense. However, linebackers coach Andre’ Hart says two other players are pushing to earn starting roles.

Hart met with the media on Tuesday and was asked about Woods and Bentley lining up as the starting duo. He named former Jackson State transfer Jeremiah Brown and Charlotte 49ers transfer Nikhai Hill-Green as players “making a really big push.”

Brown played in all 12 games last season and registered 11 tackles. Hill-Green played in 11 games for Charlotte with seven starts and was second on the team with 73 total tackles.

Here’s what Coach Hart had to say about the competition at linebacker:

Early in the season I thought it would be (Woods and Bentley), and now, Nikhai (Hill-Green) and Jeremiah Brown are making a really big push,” Hart said. “We’ve been mixing these guys up. I always talk about competition keeping them up at night, well now they keeping me up at night because I’m trying to think who’s going to be that guy for me. They’ve been playing really well. I’m excited to see who’s going to come out on top. But I feel good with any four of those guys in.”

Five CU Buffs to watch this spring

These five Buffs are worth keeping an eye on this spring

The countdown is nearly complete as the 2023 CU Buffs begin spring football practices on Sunday.

Players and coaches alike, there are plenty of new faces in Boulder this spring who are eager to get Colorado back to its glory days. Those additions include head coach Deion Sanders, former top overall recruit Travis Hunter, new Buffs quarterback Shedeur Sanders and a number of talented incoming freshmen.

This spring is, of course, an important one for a program in the midst of an unprecedented transition led by Coach Prime.

Below are five players — all new Buffs — who I predict will have a big spring season:
