Jeff Saturday’s recent tweet about the Raiders being bad is too funny now that he’ll coach against them Sunday

Some inadvertent bulletin board material here. Whoops!

The Indianapolis Colts surprised everyone on Monday not when they fired Frank Reich, which they did, but when they then announced that former center Jeff Saturday, who has only coached a high school team, will be their interim coach going forward.

That move announced by Colts owner Jim Irsay was a total stunner and had NFL fans rightfully ripping the team for hiring a dude WHO HAS NEVER COACHED IN COLLEGE OR THE NFL.

But hey, Saturday is their new guy and this week he’ll be leading Indy up against the Las Vegas Raiders. Speaking of the Raiders, he tweeted this about them last week:

That is too funny. Also, The Raiders are 6-point home favorites against the Colts in Week 10.

Life can come at you fast!

NFL fans had jokes.

Colts hire Jeff Saturday: Funniest Twitter reactions to surprising hiring

Twitter had a field day after the Colts named Jeff Saturday the interim head coach.

The Indianapolis Colts made a shocking move Monday, announcing former Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday the interim head coach following the firing of Frank Reich.

Not only is this move a complete surprise in general, but it comes even more shocking considering the fact that Saturday has no coaching experience at the collegiate or NFL level.

As expected, Twitter had a field day with the news.

NFL fans crushed the Colts for naming Jeff Saturday, who has only coached a high school team, their new head coach

What?! Why?

The Indianapolis Colts fired head coach Frank Reich on Monday, a move that wasn’t that surprising given the team’s struggles this season, although it feels like the franchise’s problems stem from quarterback choice.

I’m getting off track here. Because we’re here to focus on what happened after the firing: The Colts then announced Reich’s interim replacement. His name? Jeff Saturday.

Yes, as in former Colts center Jeff Saturday. As in ESPN analyst Jeff Saturday.

His head coaching credentials? He coached Hebron Christian Academy’s squad for a few seasons. He’s “consulted” for his former team for a few years.

YIKES. NOT GOOD! NFL fans agreed:

Surprise in Indy: Former Packers C Jeff Saturday named Colts interim head coach

Saturday, who spent one season with the Packers in 2012 before retiring, will be the interim coach for the Colts for the remainder of the 2022 season.

The Green Bay Packers are dealing with their own turmoil at the moment, but here’s a big surprise out of Indianapolis: After firing Frank Reich, the Colts have named former Packers center Jeff Saturday as the team’s interim coach.

Saturday, now 47, was a five-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro with the Colts as a player between 1999 and 2011 but has never coached at the NFL level. He spent the 2012 season with the Packers and actually made a sixth Pro Bowl despite being benched in favor of Evan Dietrich-Smith in December of that season.

Overall, Saturday played 962 snaps for the Packers in 2012. He allowed 10 pressures and committed one penalty, per PFF.

Saturday, who retired after the 2012 season, has worked for ESPN as a broadcaster and analyst since 2013. He’s also been a coach for a school in Georgia since 2017 while also consulting with the Colts this season.

Saturday signed a one-day contract and retired as a member of the Colts on March 7, 2013.

Over nine years later, he’s back in a much different role.

The Colts are 3-5-1 and have lost three straight games, including a 26-3 defeat at the hands of the New England Patriots on Sunday. Saturday’s first game as interim coach will come on Sunday against Davante Adams and the Las Vegas Raiders.

ESPN’s Jeff Saturday named interim head coach of Colts

Jeff Saturday is the Colts’ interim head coach, going from ESPN to the sidelines

The Indianapolis Colts have dipped into their franchise’s history for the interim head coach to replace Frank Reich, who was fired Monday.

ESPN analyst Jeff Saturday will keep the seat warm for the rest of the season … at least.

Saturday was head coach of Georgia’s Hebron Christian Academy from 2017-2020.

Going from high school to the NFL is a bigger step than what Gerry Faust did when he went from HS to Notre Dame. This is quite the leap.

And …

Colts name Jeff Saturday interim head coach after firing Frank Reich

BREAKING: Colts name Jeff Saturday interim head coach.

The Indianapolis Colts have hired former Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday as interim head coach following the firing of Frank Reich, the team announced Monday.

The decision to fire Reich midseason was a mild surprise, but the move to hire Saturday comes completely out of left field. He will be taking on the role after spending the majority of his post-playing career as an ESPN analyst.

It wasn’t clear exactly who would be taking over as the interim head coach after news of Reich’s dismissal broke, but logically it seemed it would be someone currently in the organization.

Instead, the Colts will be going with Saturday for the remainder of the season.

Saturday doesn’t have any notable coaching experience at the collegiate or NFL levels. He did coach at Hebron Christian Academy in Georgia from 2017-2020, but that’s the extent of his experience.

Saturday, of course, was a fantastic center for the Colts, earning six Pro Bowl nods and two All-Pro first-team selections. However, coaching is an entirely different animal.

The Colts will hold a press conference with Saturday, owner Jim Irsay and general manager Chris Ballard at 6 p.m. ET.

7 Colts among modern-era Pro Football Hall of Fame nominees

7 former Colts are among the modern-era Pro Football Hall of Fame nominees for the Class of 2023.

Seven former Indianapolis Colts are among the list of 129 modern-era Nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023.

The list of nominees for the Class of 2023 consists of “67 offensive players, 50 defensive players and 12 special teams players. The list of Modern-Era Nominees will be reduced to 25 Semifinalists in November and, from there, to 15 Finalists whose names will be announced in early January.”

Here are the seven former Colts who are nominees for the Class of 2023:

Jeff Saturday on Carson Wentz: ‘I think he’s done in Indy’

‘I think he’s done in Indy.’ Jeff Saturday gave his thoughts on the future of QB Carson Wentz.

Former Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday wasn’t shy about giving his thoughts on the future of current starting quarterback Carson Wentz.

The narrative right now surrounding Wentz is that many believe he won’t survive the offseason wearing a Colts uniform. While it’s pretty early to tell what will happen over the next month or so, Saturday didn’t mince his words.

“I think he’s done in Indy,” Saturday said on ESPN’s show Get Up on Tuesday. “Look at what happened with Wentz and the way the season ended and you hear all of the things and reports coming out of Indianapolis, it does not feel like it’s a hopeful situation.”

While Saturday certainly gave that strong opinion on Wentz’s future, he also hedged his bet a little by stating they may not make a move if an immediate upgrade isn’t available.

“I will say this though. Chris Ballard, Frank Reich and Jim Irsay all understand it’s not just letting somebody go. It’s who you can get to replace him,” Saturday said. “So if they don’t feel like whoever they can get is going to be an upgrade, I think they would run it back with Carson Wentz and try to get him better.”

Saturday ultimately said that he believes Wentz is done in Indy. But he also mentioned how the Colts may be in a bit of wait-and-see mode when it comes to the Aaron Rodgers saga.

Depending on what happens with Rodgers, there may be a few teams will to give the Colts a call.

“I think they’re watching the Aaron Rodgers news,” Saturday said. “That’s going to be the domino that let’s all the others fall so they can find out where they really are in the sweepstakes of QBs.”

It should be noted that this is all Saturday’s opinion. He’s, of course, still well connected with the franchise but he’s not reporting this as news.

But it is significant that so much has been said about Wentz’s future with the Colts coming into doubt.

Regardless, we are in a waiting game now before the March 18 deadline, which is when Wentz receives a roster bonus.

Colts legend Jeff Saturday says Colts lost to Jags ‘broke’ him

Former Colts center Jeff Saturday isn’t taking Indy’s loss to the Jags all that well and vented about it on the “Pat McAfee Show.”

The Jacksonville Jaguars came into Sunday’s game +14.5 point underdogs to the Indianapolis Colts, but just as they did against the heavily favored Buffalo Bills Week 9, the Cardiac Cats pulled off a miracle. Not only were they victorious, though, they won by over two touchdowns and helped eliminate the Colts out of postseason contention.

The Jags’ upset left many Colts fans, players, and coaches distraught, and as a result, it’s going to take a while to get over. That appears to especially be the case for Colts legend Jeff Saturday, who is now an analyst at ESPN.

On an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show,” Saturday called the loss to the Jags an “epic failure” that “broke” him.

“Epic failure. It broke me,” the former Colts center said. “I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a game that hurt that much that I wasn’t in. My stomach hurt for everyone who was a Colts fan or part of the organization. We can talk about (Carson) Wentz and him not getting it done, but we got beat up. It wasn’t even close. They beat the brakes off us and we had no answer. I never saw that coming.”

Saturday is right, the Jags beat the Colts in every aspect of the game even when taken out the fact that quarterback Carson Wentz was sacked six times. They converted almost half of their third-downs (7-of-15), they won the turnover margin at a 2-to-0 rate, held the Colts to under 100 rushing yards, and won the time of possession battle, too (33:19 to 26:41).

However, there was just a positive vibe surrounding the Jags from the jump as they scored a touchdown on the first drive, and quarterback Trevor Lawrence hit receiver Laquon Treadwell on a 2-yard touchdown reception to end it. It was then that Saturday started to realize that the Colts were in for a long day.

“The first drive, you’re seeing (Jacksonville) convert and growing in confidence,” he added. “You see Lawrence starting to feel good. We had zero pass rush. He’s back there smoking a cigarette, taking his time. No issues. No worries. That got us off our game. We never got into a rhythm with (running back Jonathan) Taylor. We kind of allowed them to dictate when we were going to try to run, and our offensive line didn’t play well. […] Everyone had issues that showed up in big moments.”

While some were stunned, the Jags did prove they were capable of hanging with the Colts earlier this season as Lawrence had a chance to march the Jags down the field for a walk-off score Week 10. However, the Colts’ defense made a huge play as defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo stripped Lawrence and the ball was recovered by Indy.

Lawrence didn’t take that loss well and got his revenge on the Colts after going 23-of-32 (71.9%) for 223 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday. Unfortunately for Saturday and the Colts, his revenge came when they needed a win the most, and now the team will have to wait until next season to chase a Super Bowl title.

Jeff Saturday says it’s Mitchell Trubisky’s job to lose

While many feel Nick Foles already has the starting QB job locked up, Jeff Saturday believes the job is Mitchell Trubisky’s to lose.

Ever since the Chicago Bears traded for former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles, everyone knew there was going to be competition for the starting quarterback job. Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky acknowledged the acquisition of Foles today in his press conference with the media.

Heading into his fourth year, Trubisky has been organizing workouts for weeks in the Chicago area with some of his teammates. One of his teammates, running back Tarik Cohen, notices Trubisky putting in the work.

“He’s slinging it right now,” Cohen said. “You still see the talent in Mitch.”

After a rough 2019 season for Trubisky and the Bears trading for a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, many believe that the job should belong to Foles and the second overall pick from North Carolina should be the backup. ESPN analyst and former All-Pro center Jeff Saturday took to NFL Live to say otherwise.

“They are (Trubisky’s team),” Saturday said. “Listen, it’s his job to lose. This is the thing. I get Nick Foles is coming in. I understand from a guy who came in as an undrafted rookie free agent, every year they’re trying to draft somebody to replace you. Quarterbacks, it usually doesn’t happen to them. He’s fighting for his job.

“But Nick Foles, set aside his Super Bowl run with the Eagles, his career hasn’t been — he’s just not a complete starter in the NFL. I’m glad Trubisky is saying, ‘I’m pissed off in a good way. I’m willing to work. I’m going to make this my team.’”

Last year Trubisky finished the season with 17 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and 3,138 yards with a 63.2% completion rate, which caused a ton of frustration for Bears fans. Trubisky can’t control what the front office does and who they bring in, but he can control how he plays and his business. The Bears also declined Trubisky’s fifth year in his rookie contract, so that and the addition of Foles could light a fire under the 25-year old quarterback.

Regardless, it’s great to see Trubisky working with his teammates in a tough offseason and to see him handle the competition well.
