Best WWE SummerSlam main events of all time: Tier list rankings

Some WWE SummerSlam main events were legendary. Others were duds. Our tier list helps rank them all.

No matter what WWE tells you on television, this year’s SummerSlam has one true main event.

No, it is not the World Heavyweight title match between Seth Rollins and Finn Balor, nor is it the grudge match between Cody Rhodes and Brock Lesnar.

It’s undoubtedly, no, unequivocally, Tribal Combat between Roman Reigns and Jey Uso. That’s it, end of discussion, debate whomever you hold dear.

Although I believe Tribal Combat is the biggest WWE match of the year so far, does it have the chance to sit among the classic main events in SummerSlam history? Before we answer that question, we have to answer another question: What are the classic main events in SummerSlam history? And to that end, where do the other ones rank?

That is where I step in to help provide an answer … my answer, at least. I attempt to answer these questions with a tiered list of the main events throughout the event’s 35-year history.

I broke down every SummerSlam main event into four tiers: The Classics, The Hall of Very Good, “It was fine, I guess”, and “Feel free to skip.”

The only matches that qualify are the ones that closed the show, so no double main event nonsense here. However, there is one exception in 2013, which I will explain when it comes up.

Each match is listed in each tier based on chronological order, so don’t take anything away from the order that they are listed.

AEW Rampage results 06/16/23: Ospreay, Takeshita grab wins

See what went down on AEW Rampage the night before the Collision premiere.

Will Ospreay is pretty damn cool. All he did was show up at the tail end of a wild final segment at the end of AEW Dynamite this week to attack Kenny Omega, and even if you were unfamiliar with his work, you could feel it. And what do you know, he’s in action on AEW Rampage tonight.

So is Rocky Romero, and guess what? We just talked to him not long ago.

These men are here because Forbidden Door is getting ever so much closer, and it’s fun that New Japan’s finest are spicing up AEW programming. Oh, and the other matches on this week’s card don’t look too shabby either, including rising star (and now heel) Konosuke Takeshita.

Let’s see what this hour of pro wrestling has in store.

AEW Rampage results:

  • United Empire (Jeff Cobb, Kyle Fletcher and Will Ospreay) def. Chaos (Best Friends and Rocky Romero) by pinfall when Ospreay pins Romero
  • Taya Valkyrie def. Trish Adora by pinfall
  • The Hardys officially accept the challenge from The Gunns for the next episode of Dynamite, with Matt Hardy calling it “adorable” that the Gunns forgot who the Hardys are and Jeff saying they’d make their foes famous
  • Mark Briscoe, Papa Briscoe and Aubrey Edwards def. Jay Lethal, Jeff Jarrett and Karen Jarrett by pinfall
  • Valkyrie is feeling good about her latest victory, but less thrilled with TBS Champion Kris Statlander, who seems glad to put her title up against Taya next week
  • Don Callis crashes the Mark Henry pre-main event segment and trash talks Kenny Omega and a handful of Mexican wrestling legends; Callis also joins the announcers for the main event and says he’s going to keep Takeshita climbing until it forces Omega to face him
  • Konosuke Takeshita def. Bandido by pinfall

AEW Rampage results 06/09/23: Skye Blue soars to title opportunity

See who emerged as the No. 1 contender for the AEW Women’s World Championship on AEW Rampage.

It’s time to find out who’s going to be next to challenge Toni Storm for the AEW Women’s World Championship.

There are a handful of wrestlers with their eyes on Storm’s title, so the easiest way to settle the pecking order among them is to throw them into one match. Naturally.

That happens tonight on AEW Rampage, with Britt Baker, Skye Blue, Mercedes Martinez and Nyla Rose all vying for the title shot. Logic would dictate that Baker will win, both because she’s the highest profile competitor and is part of an ongoing narrative with Storm and The Outcasts, but you never know.

This episode of Rampage will also have a couple of intriguing trios matches (any night where Rey Fenix and The Acclaimed are all competing is a good one) and Powerhouse Hobbs will be in action as well.

So even though I’m personally invested in and distracted by Game 4 of the NBA Finals (#BringItIn), I’m looking forward to this Rampage as well. Let’s see what we’ve got.

AEW Rampage results:

  • Lucha Bros. and Bandido def. Ethan Page, Big Bill and Lee Moriarty by pinfall after Matt and Jeff Hardy and insist that Page pull up Jeff Hardy-like arm sleeves, after which he is quickly pinned by Bandido
  • QTV is back in effect, with QT Marshall saying they need to be edgier, but despite one funny joke about “making an announcement about an announcement,” they settle on just sending Powerhouse Hobbs out to show people what Collision will be about
  • Powerhouse Hobbs def. Caleb Crush in a squash
  • Arn Anderson gives Renee Paquette an update on his son Brock and warns Christian Cage and Luchasaurus that what goes around, comes around; Wardlow says he’ll make them pay but needs to take care of Jake Hager first
  • The Acclaimed and Daddy Ass def. Spanish Announce Project by pinfall
  • Paquette attempts to interview Jay Lethal, Jeff Jarrett and company but Karen Jarrett wants to use the time to handle her beef with Aubrey Edwards; the referee arrives with Mark Briscoe in tow, and Edwards says she’s going to kick Karen’s ass despite AEW not sanctioning a match between them; Briscoe says AEW will sanction a mixed trios match, which will be Lethal and the Jarretts against Edwards, Mark … and Papa Briscoe!
  • Skye Blue def. Nyla Rose, Mercedes Martinez and Britt Baker to earn an AEW Women’s World Championship match on the next episode of Dynamite

AEW Rampage results 05/26/23: Tag teams, trios take the pre-Double or Nothing stage

Check out the action from the final AEW Rampage before Double or Nothing in Las Vegas.

Maybe because AEW PPVs are several months apart, it sometimes feels like the stretch run to each one is longer than it should be. But that’s behind us now as Double or Nothing is Sunday night, meaning tonight’s episode of AEW Rampage is legitimately the last stop before the big event.

Unlike previous years, AEW chose not to do a live Rampage for Double or Nothing week this time out, meaning there are spoilers out there for what’s going to happen. Nevertheless, just like we did for the other wrestling show on TV tonight, we’re going to happily live blog this like it’s unfolding in real time. You can indulge us that, yes?

What we know is that this is going to be a tag team-heavy hour of action. The Acclaimed, who went from being the hottest duo in the sport to a bit of an afterthought as of late as a trio, will face a trio from Le Faccion Ingobernable. A big battle in the women’s division will see Britt Baker and Hikaru Shida join forces to battle Nyla Rose and Marina Shafir. And Best Friends will go up against a tag team that used to be part of The Firm but seems to be sticking together anyway, Big Bill and Lee Moriarty.

AEW Rampage results from Las Vegas:

  • Max Caster gets in a Fight Forever mention in his entrance rap and says Rush’s hair looks like pubes

  • The Acclaimed and Daddy Ass def. La Faccion Ingobernable by pinfall
  • After the bell, Anthony Bowens says they’ve been running through the trios division all month long so they’re looking to challenge House of Black on Sunday
  • Ethan Page and The Gunns def. Frescomatic, Watson and Jeaux Braxton by pinfall
  • Page says he hopes the Hardys were watching as they just showed the world what a real trio can do, boasting about taking out Brother Zay and implying their match will be three on two … but Matt and Jeff say they’ll delete those egos Sunday, but even though Brother Zay isn’t cleared for Double or Nothing, he’s found a replacement: Hook; the heels want no part of them for now

  • Keith Lee and Dustin Rhodes are told that Swerve Strickland and Brian Cage will be in the Blackjack Battle Royal, and Lee’s response is simple: Can’t wait
  • Britt Baker and Hikaru Shida def. Marina Shafir and Nyla Rose by submission as Baker taps out Shafir with the Lockjaw, but …
  • … The Outcasts are shown on the big screen beating up on Jamie Hayter backstage, probably calling her participation in Double or Nothing even more into question

  • Big Bill and Lee Moriarty def. Best Friends by pinfall, then all heck breaks loose as the participants from the Blackjack Battle Royal start brawling; Orange Cassidy comes out to check on his friends, followed by Brian Cage, Keith Lee, Dustin Rhodes and Swerve Strickland, who taunts Lee as the show goes off the air

AEW Rampage results: Jay Lethal and company too much for Cash Wheeler

Full AEW Rampage results for the April 28, 2023 episode, including a showdown between Cash Wheeler and Jay Lethal.

It’s not 10 p.m., but nevertheless it’s time for AEW Rampage. The NHL playoffs have forced the action earlier in the night, though of course the show was taped Wednesday and could literally air at just about any time TNT has room between action movies and sports.

Semi-forgotten man Ricky Starks is in action alongside recently returned and suddenly turned face Shawn Spears, as they go up against the Bullet Club Gold duo of Jay White and Juice Robinson. Can you have a Bullet Club with just two people? These two seem determined to find out.

Also, FTR’s Cash Wheeler, who doesn’t take part in too many singles matches, will take on Jay Lethal as part of the ongoing struggle for the heart and mind of Jay Briscoe.

Let’s get to this and then get to the hockey.

AEW Rampage results:

  • Jay White and Juice Robinson def. Ricky Starks and Shawn Spears by pinfall with White pinning Spears with a Blade Runner
  • The Hardys are looking for Isiah Kassidy, and they find him … getting beaten up by The Firm; Ethan Page demands that their match against Matt and Jeff at the Hardy Compound take place next week, but Kassidy still gets chokeslammed off some scaffolding
  • Dustin Rhodes and Keith Lee def. Brady Pierce and Charlie James by pinfall, then has a staredown with Swerve Strickland and his Affiliates
  • Tay Melo crashes a Sammy Guevara interview to give him the business about potentially laying down for MJF
  • Anna Jay def. Ashley D’Amboise but gets attacked by Julia Hart right after the bell and they have a short fight that essentially ends in a stalemate
  • The Outcasts say Saraya will win her match on Dynamite against Willow Nightingale, because they wouldn’t say she’d lose it
  • The Acclaimed and DaddyAss def. Three jobbers by pinfall in a squash match that was shorter than Max Caster’s entrance rap
  • Jay Lethal def. Cash Wheeler by pinfall as Sonjay Dutt’s hijinks prove too much for even Dax Harwood and Mark Briscoe to counter

Isiah Kassidy made Jeff Hardy promise not to dance before coming to the rescue on Dynamite

Kassidy asked Jeff Hardy for no “juking” on his way to the ring, a fun callback to his infamous AEW debut.

When Matt Hardy and Isiah Kassidy decided to finally take a stand against The Firm this week on Dynamite, they knew they were going to be outnumbered. They had a plan for that in the form of some high-powered backup: a returning Jeff Hardy.

The younger Hardy brother, who had been off AEW TV for 10 months, made a beeline for the ring wielding a steel chair, running off the rest of The Firm and hitting his signature Swanton Bomb.

It was a far cry from when Jeff Hardy made his AEW debut in March 2022, when he famously stopped to do his “Dougie” dance on the ramp while Matt was getting the crap kicked out of him (ironically, by a group that included Private Party, Kassidy’s tag team).

What changed this time? As it turns out, Kassidy specifically asked Jeff not to do any “juking” when he ran out to make the save, as the funny video he tweeted out today shows.

Props to Kassidy for getting Jeff to pinky promise. Can’t be more sure that someone’s going to stick to their word than that.

There’s a serious discussion to be had about Jeff Hardy’s return due to the reason he was away. On June 13 of last year, he was arrested for driving with a suspended license and felony DUI, sadly not the first time he had substance abuse issues during his career. Tony Khan announced his suspension without pay the next day, stating that the only way he’d be allowed back on AEW programming was if he completed alcohol rehab and showed he could maintain his sobriety.

Wrestling fans are putting faith in Khan that he’s sticking to his guns with Jeff Hardy and that resources are in place to help him if he feels he’s going to backslide on staying sober. That said, if he’s going to be an active performer again, there’s nothing wrong with some lighthearted references to his AEW debut, and Kassidy and the Hardys managed to craft a good one here.

AEW Dynamite results: Swerve settles a score, The Elite stands strong

Live AEW Dynamite results for April 12, 2023 in Milwaukee, with Orange Cassidy defending his International Championship vs. Buddy Matthews.

If it’s Wednesday, and both the calendar and our boss assures us it is, it must be time for AEW Dynamite. Tonight’s show originates from Milwaukee, and a familiar formula for the card promises some good action.

For starters, we’ve got championship matches, as in plural. Orange Cassidy, a working man’s champion in every way but demeanor, is set to defend his AEW International Championship yet again. The challenger is someone who already has one title, Buddy Matthews of the House of Black, who would be a surprising yet not undeserving double champ if he wins.

Powerhouse Hobbs is another titleholder who isn’t about to back down from any challenge, even the open variety. Milwaukee will bear witness to Silas Young trying his best to wrest the TNT Championship from Hobbs, though that will be no easy task.

A pair of tag team matches have also been promoted. Riho and Skye Blue are among the women brave enough to stand up to The Outcasts so far. They’ll have to do it again tonight when they face Ruby Soho and Toni Storm. On the men’s side, the BCC has run through pretty much everyone its faced the last few weeks, and will try to do so again when Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli face … (checks notes) … Brandon Cutler and Michael Nakazawa? Oh dear.

Two former partners whose paths have diverged wildly will also be in action on Dynamite. Keith Lee will take on Chris Jericho, while Swerve Strickland will face off with Darby Allin.

Finally, while AEW World Champion MJF made it clear he didn’t want to go to Milwaukee, he’s contractually obligated to be there. So yeah, that’ll be happening too.

AEW Dynamite results in 60 seconds:

  • Darby Allin def. Swerve Strickland by pinfall
  • MJF has to be here so he might as well insult Darby Allin, but he didn’t figure on Sting joining the party
  • Powerhouse Hobbs def. Silas Young by pinfall to retain the AEW TNT Championship …
  • … but then Wardlow destroys Hobbs’ car and poor Aaron solo
  • Jay White and Juice Robinson say this will be the greatest era of the Bullet Club ever
  • Orange Cassidy def. Buddy Matthews by pinfall to retain the AEW International Championship
  • Christian Cage and Luchasaurus say some things have changes; well, just Cage, really
  • Renee Paquette tries to get a medical update on Cassidy’s hand, while Best Friends want to fight Aussie Open on Rampage
  • Ethan Page thinks he has one up on Matt Hardy and Private Party, but The Firm didn’t plan on the arrival of Hook … and Jeff Hardy
  • A sullen Kenny Omega says hurting Don Callis crossed the line, and what happens next time he sees the Blackpool Combat Club will be “much, much worse” that blood for blood
  • Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli def. Brandon Cutler and Michael Nakazawa by referee stoppage but end up retreating once Omega and the Young Bucks all hit the ring
  • Swerve says the Mogul Embassy is going to leave there with something
  • Ruby Soho and Toni Storm def. Riho and Skye Blue by pinfall, but Jamie Hayter and Britt Baker chase off The Outcasts after the match
  • Chris Jericho def. Keith Lee by pinfall after Swerve hits Lee with a foreign object; Adam Cole comes out to ensure no one attacks Lee after the match

Please scroll down for more details on every match and major non-match segment.

Who has won the most WWE championships of all time? Here’s the top 10

See who has won the most WWE championships of all time as we run down the top 10 list of most decorated superstars.

The Bloodline knows a thing or two about having a lot of gold.

Roman Reigns and The Usos have made a lot of noise as of late in WWE by uniting the promotions top singles and tag team titles for men, effectively holding two championships at once. It’s an impressive feat, and adds two more titles to the tallies of both the Tribal Chief and the Uso brothers.

In the case of Reigns, it also adds to his overall haul of WWE championships. Since his main roster debut in late 2012, Reigns has held every major WWE title at least once, including the WWE Tag Championship (with Seth Rollins, back when there was only one) and both the Intercontinental and United States Championships (one time each).

But are Reigns’ nine total titles enough to make the top 10 list of wrestlers who have held the most WWE championships? We dove in to find out.

Before we get to the list, some ground rules. For the sake of these rankings, we’re counting only what we consider major WWE championships, singles and tag team, for both men and women. We’re not counting titles won in WCW (sorry, Sting and others) but are including those same belts when won in WWE, like the current United States Championship.

We’re also not counting anything the wrestlers themselves invented, like Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Championship, nor are we considering the 24/7 Championship, which changes so often as a condition of its gimmick that it makes the number of title reigns essentially meaningless. Much respect to everyone who continues to chase that strap, however, because mid-card championships are fun too.

Also not included are the Hardcore Championship, for similar reasons to the 24/7 title, or the Light Heavyweight/Cruiserweight titles.

With those specifics out of the way, let’s jump into the list of who’s won the most WWE championships of all time, starting with No. 10 and working our way to the top.

Tony Khan announces AEW has suspended Jeff Hardy, will work with him to get help

AEW President and CEO Tony Khan released a statement on Jeff Hardy explaining his status in the company following his recent DUI arrest.

AEW has suspended Jeff Hardy without pay following his recent arrest for DUI and two related charges, but will work with him to try to get him sober.

The company’s stance was revealed today on Twitter by AEW President and CEO Tony Khan. His tweet stated that AEW has been in contact with Hardy and that the 44-year-old wrestler had expressed a willingness to get treatment for his substance abuse issues, but that he would only be able to resume his career upon completion of that treatment.

Hardy’s status had been the subject of much debate throughout the pro wrestling community since word broke of his arrest in Volusia County, Florida in the early morning hours of June 13. The DUI charge — his third in less than 10 years, making it a third-degree felony under Florida law — was seen as a sign that he was once again losing his battle with sobriety, and even worse, that he may hurt others as a result of his behavior.

Subsequent details of his arrest did nothing to lessen that impression, with police documents showing that Hardy had a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit when pulled over, and video obtained by TMZ detailing the full nature of Hardy’s disorientation during his interaction with law enforcement officers.

Jeff’s brother Matt, with whom he had reunited as a top tag team in AEW, tweeted out that he was “disheartened” by the news but pledged to help him in any way possible.

The Hardys were scheduled to take place in a three-team Ladder Match for the AEW World Tag Team Championship on Dynamite this week. But the promotion had stopped advertising the match following Hardy’s arrest, and reports surfaced suggesting that AEW broadcast partner Warner Bros. Discovery had asked the company not to promote Hardy in commercials or on TV.

Khan’s statement leaves the door open for a potential return at some point, but only if Hardy is able to get and stay sober, which is a position everyone in the wrestling world is likely to back at this point.

Jeff Hardy arrested in Florida, charged with 3rd-degree felony DUI

Jeff Hardy was arrested in Florida on June 13 on three charges, including a third-degree felony DUI.

Jeff Hardy was arrested in Florida early Monday morning, leaving his future with AEW very much in doubt.

Court records from the Volusia County Inmate log confirm that Hardy was booked at 12:45 a.m. on June 13 and charged with three offenses:

  • Violating restrictions placed on a drivers license
  • Driving with a license that is canceled, suspended or revoked
  • DUI – third offense within 10 years
Image credit: Corrections – Volusia County

According to Marc Raimondi of ESPN, the third charge is a third-degree felony, while the other two are misdemeanors.

It’s unfortunately not the first time that Hardy has stumbled during his battle against substance dependence. His history of legal trouble dates back to 2009, when he was arrested for and pled guilty to charges of trafficking prescription drugs and possession of anabolic steroids. Hardy was fined $100,000 and served a short jail sentence at the time.

More troublesome has been his more recent arrests for public intoxication and DUI, most recently in the fall of 2019. Whether Hardy has been able to get the help he needs has been a question for some time, and this arrest makes it clear it’s still an open one.

It would not be a surprise if Hardy’s career is also hanging in the balance. At age 44 and known for wrestling a high-flying, daredevil style, he’s certainly closer to the end than the beginning. While AEW has given him a chance to reunite with brother Matt and get one more, perhaps final, high profile push, a release could mean the end for him with the large U.S. wrestling companies.

The Hardys were scheduled to take part in a three-way tag team title match against Jurassic Express and the Young Bucks this Wednesday night in St. Louis, but whether that remains on the card as advertised remains to be seen. The overwhelming sentiment from the wrestling community in the wake of this news is hope that Hardy seeks and receives the help he needs before something tragic happens to him or someone else.
