Auburn Gymnastics tops NC State in top 25 clash

Cassie Stevens wins all-around as Auburn takes down its’ second straight top-25 squad at Neville Arena

It was business as usual for No. 5 Auburn Gymnastics, as they earned their second-straight home win over a top-25 foe. The Tigers used a different game plan where several gymnasts were moved around, or even omitted, from different events. Despite the change, Auburn was able to defeat No. 25 NC State, 197.175-196.125.

One of the most notable changes was [autotag]Suni Lee[/autotag] being bumped from the all-around by receiving a break from the floor routine. Fans shared concern after noticing her absence from the event, but head coach [autotag]Jeff Graba[/autotag] says that it was all a part of a plan that will help Auburn succeed later in the season.

“We are trying to be smart with her. We got to the end of last year, and our all-arounders were really tired. We are doing three or four all-arounders at times right now. It was just Suni’s turn,” Graba said after Friday’s meet. “We have both Cassie (Stevens) and [autotag]Olivia Hollingsworth[/autotag] who are holding up right now, but at some point, we are going to have to do the same thing with them.”

Although the team planned for said changes throughout the week, it affected the team’s routine, which threw off its’ usual energy. Senior [autotag]Cassie Stevens[/autotag] says that despite the adversity the team faced, she is pleased that they were able to still post a high overall score.

“We made some mistakes, and those are things that we are going to want to improve on in the future. I feel like we haven’t really hit our stride yet, we know that there is so much more in the tank,” Stevens said. “It is comforting to know, like, even with a not-so-great meet that we can still go 197. It also looked like we know that there is so much more.”

Stevens won the all-around title in Friday’s meet, scoring a 39.600, with her best scores coming on vault and floor, where she scored a 9.925 in both events. She also scored a 9.9 on beam.

“I was really happy with my performance. I feel like, just working on all of those little, finer details in the gym this past week paid off, which is always really nice when your hard work pays off,” Stevens said. “I had to face some adversity just in random things… slipping on puddles, mats not being underneath of me, but it was just nice to go out there and fight and have it pay off.”

Auburn will hit the road next week to face their sixth-straight top-25 opponent, No. 13 Alabama. The Tigers and Tide will meet at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa next Friday at 6:30 P.M. CT.

Auburn vs. NC State: How to watch Friday’s meet at Neville Arena

Auburn returns to Neville Arena on Friday to compete with yet another top-25 squad.

After an impressive home opener last Friday, No. 5 Auburn Gymnastics returns to Neville Arena to face yet another top-25 squad in No. 25 NC State

A sold-out, energetic crowd watched Auburn score a collective 197.500 last Friday night against Arkansas, led by All-American Norah Flatley. Floor was Auburn’s strongest event in the contest, as they scored 49.500. [autotag]Olivia Hollingsworth[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrian Gobourne[/autotag] each recorded a 9.9, with Gobourne earning the highest overall score of 9.950. [autotag]Suni Lee[/autotag] took home the All-Around title with a 39.750.

Auburn head coach [autotag]Jeff Graba[/autotag] credits the home crowd for providing enough energy to help his squad earn the win.

“Great crowd, love the atmosphere, and we needed everything that we could get from them, and they gave it to us,” Graba said following last Friday’s meet. “It was a really tight, tough fight all the way through and I think it makes you better when you go through that. I’m really proud of the team.”

This Friday, the Tigers welcome NC State. The Wolfpack are new to the top 25 this week and average an overall score of 196.183. In three meets this season, three NC State gymnasts have reached event highs of 9.9 or higher, led by Chloe Negrete, who holds the team’s individual high scores on vault, beam, and floor.

Graba says that competing with nonconference teams such as NC State will only make his team better.

“NC State is going to come in here and are going to be really good,” Graba said. “We aren’t taking this Friday lightly. They are a team that has made some really good postseason runs and it is going to be a great test for us. We need to stay focused and just get better this Friday.”

Below, you will find all of the key information needed ahead of Friday’s meet between Auburn and NC State including a how-to-watch guide, gymnasts to watch, and an in-depth look at Auburn’s last meet against Arkansas.

Auburn Gymnastics vs. Florida: How to watch Friday’s meet in Gainesville

Two of NCAA Gymnastics’ top teams meet in Gainesville on Friday night

Fresh off of their best season-opening performance in program history, Auburn Gymnastics returns to action Friday night.

The Tigers competed against three of College Gymnastics’ top-tier programs in Oklahoma, Michigan, and UCLA last Saturday night in Las Vegas as part of the Super 16 event, and performed exceptionally well by finishing third in the competition with a score of 197.350.

Olympic gold medalist [autotag]Suni Lee[/autotag] won the all-around title with a 39.750, which was earned in part to her 10.000 score on beam. Her performance led her to earning SEC Gymnast of the Week for the fourth time in her short career on the Plains.

This Friday, the No. 5 Tigers travel to Gainesville for the SEC opener against No. 2 Florida. Last season, the Tigers and Gators tied with identical 198.575 scores in Neville Arena. Head coach [autotag]Jeff Graba[/autotag] says that how well his team performs Friday will be a great indicator of how well the rest of the season will shake out.

“The better we do on Friday, the better the rest of the season looks,” Graba said ahead of Auburn’s meet at Florida. “I was really happy with what happened in Las Vegas because that would have been a counting score for us last year. To start like that, it’s a big deal. And to build off of it this weekend on the road will only benefit us later in the season.”

If you are wondering how to watch Friday’s meet between the Tigers and Gators, you have come to the right place. Below, you will find key information for Friday’s tilt, including a how-to-watch guide, gymnasts to watch, and last week’s key performers.

Lee dominates competition in Auburn Gymnastics’ season opener

Suni Lee earned the all-around crown in Saturday’s Super 16 meet against powers UCLA, Michigan, and Oklahoma.

The No. 5 Auburn Tigers opened the season in a big way on Saturday night by placing third in the Super 16 in Las Vegas.

The Tigers scored 197.350, which sets a program record for the highest score in a season-opening contest. Auburn finished behind the last two programs to win a national championship, Michigan and Oklahoma and finished 0.075 points higher than seven-time national champion UCLA.

Opening the season against strong competition provided the challenge that head coach [autotag]Jeff Graba[/autotag] was hoping his team would experience.

“It was about developing our depth and testing ourselves coming into this meet and I was really happy with how the team performed under the pressure,” Graba said following Saturday’s meet. “We beat our program record and were up against great competition so I’m excited. It was a great start and we wanted to kick off the season the right way.”

Despite the team finishing third in the competition, [autotag]Suni Lee[/autotag] won the all-around crown with a score of 39.750. She earned the overall title by scoring 9.9 on the floor and vault, a 9.95 on the bars, and a perfect 10.0 on the beam, her fourth 10.0 score as an Auburn Tiger.

“Personally, I feel like I did everything I could,” Lee said. “I had a couple of hiccups and I’m still trying to figure out my routines, but I’m just taking day by day and am happy with tonight.”

[autotag]Derrian Goboure[/autotag] got off to a hot start as well, as she scored 9.9 in vault, bars, and floor. [autotag]Olivia Hollingsworth[/autotag] and [autotag]Cassie Stevens[/autotag] competed in the all-around and finished with scores of 39.100 and 39.025 respectively.

Auburn returns to the floor next Friday, Jan. 13 at Florida. Auburn’s first home meet will take place on Friday, Jan. 20 when they host Arkansas, who is led by Olympic gold medalist Jordyn Wieber.

This season is sure to be exciting, and you do not want to miss it. Here is a look at Auburn Gymnastics’ 2023 schedule.

WATCH: Suni Lee delivers epic first pitch at Minnesota Twins game

Lee returned to her home state to add some gymnastics flair to the traditional first pitch.

Very rarely does a student-athlete have a distinguished career BEFORE stepping on campus. The one exception for Auburn athletics is gymnastics superstar [autotag]Sunisa Lee[/autotag].

Just months before taking her first college class, Lee won a gold medal with Team USA in the All-Around event, as well a bronze medal in the uneven bars during the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Friday, Lee returned to her home state in Minneapolis, Minnesota to throw out the first pitch at the Minnesota Twins’ game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Target Field. In true Suni Lee fashion, she delivered the first pitch with incredible style.

Lee will return to Auburn for her sophomore season in 2023. As a freshman in 2022, Lee reached a perfect 10.000 score five times in two different events. She reached the perfect score three times on beam against Kentucky on February 25, against Florida on March 4, and finally at the NCAA Regionals on April 2.

On the bars, she reached 10.000 twice, once at LSU on February 2, and again at the SEC Championships on March 19.

Five-star gymnast commits to Auburn

Auburn receives a commitment from a five-star gymnast from the 2024 class.

Auburn Gymnastics is continuing its plan of becoming a national powerhouse in recruiting with the commitment of a 2024 prospect on Monday.

[autotag]Olivia Ahern[/autotag], a national championship qualifier from Memphis, Tenn., has announced via Instagram that she has committed to compete for Auburn.

“I am so incredibly excited to announce that I have verbally committed to Auburn University on a full athletic scholarship!” Ahern said in her post. “I am looking forward to the next chapter and the many opportunities that await.”

According to College Gym News, Ahern has impressive scores for every event, with her strong suits being beam and floor. She has a career-high score of a perfect 10 in floor, and has reached 9.8 in beam. Her highest all-around score has topped at 39.175.

With Ahern’s commitment, it will mark the fourth straight year that Auburn has received a pledge from a five-star gymnast. Auburn gymnast [autotag]Suni Lee[/autotag] (2021), as well as commit’s [autotag]Olivia Greaves[/autotag] (2022) and [autotag]Julianne Huff[/autotag] (2023) have also been given a five-star rating from College Gym News.

Look: Auburn coaches speak at AMBUSH Huntsville

Auburn’s coaches had plenty of good news to talk about at AMBUSH Huntsville.

Auburn’s coaches have been across the state of Alabama to speak at this year’s AMBUSH alumni tour. The latest stop was in Huntsville, Alabama on May 5, and there were several notable speakers.

[autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] and [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] both made their normal appearances and addressed the sold-out crowd. However, they were joined by gymnastics coach [autotag]Jeff Graba[/autotag], Director of Athletics Allen Greene, and incoming president Chris Roberts

All three coaches have received positive news about their teams recently. Pearl and the basketball team landed transfer Johni Broom, one of the best players to enter the portal this offseason. Harsin addressed a weakness at wide receiver with the addition of Miami transfer Dazalin Worsham.

Graba has had the best week out of them all though. He announced that superstar Suni Lee is planning to return for next season during the event and Friday morning Derrian Gobourne announced she would be returning for her super-senior season.

It is a good time to be an Auburn fan as it shows it truly is an “everything school.” Here are the best photos from the event on Thursday.

Auburn gymnastics phenom Suni Lee expected to return

It’s looking like the Tigers will get their star all-around gymnast back.

It’s looking like the Tigers’ gymnastics team could retain its key piece.

Head coach [autotag]Jeff Graba[/autotag] told Auburn alumni on Thursday night that gold medal Olympian and Auburn all-around star [autotag]Sunisa Lee[/autotag] told him she intends to, at the moment, return to the Plains for her second season of college gymnastics according to a report by the Montgomery Advertiser.

Lee’s decision comes in part due to preparation for the 2024 Olympics and whether she wanted to commit to both elite gymnastics and collegiate gymnastics. According to Graba, Lee currently believes that she can do both at the moment.

“NCAA gymnastics has been good for her in a lot of ways,” Graba said before an Auburn alumni event. “But she’s going to have to balance it out. She’s going to have to make decisions in the future, but right now the decision is: ‘I think I can still do both.’ So I think that’s where we are.”

Lee’s return to Auburn would be big to Auburn gymnastics. The Tigers posted a 1-7 record in 2021 and missed out on NCAAs without Lee, but when she arrived at the Plains, she helped propel Auburn to a 22-8-1 record and an appearance in the NCAA gymnastics Final Four.

With senior Derrian Gobourne returning to the team as well, Graba has a squad that looks primed to return to the Final Four for the 2023 season. The 2023 gymnastics season should begin in the first week of January.
