Lakers add ‘VP Of Basketball Ops’ to GM Rob Pelinka’s job title

The Los Angeles Lakers gave a worthy promotion to their lead basketball decision-maker after a strong 30-7 start to the season.

Less than a year after Magic Johnson’s sudden resignation in April, the Los Angeles Lakers have made it official that Rob Pelinka will be the man in charge of the basketball operations of the franchise for the foreseeable future.

The Lakers announced on Friday, just a few hours before their nationally televised game against the Dallas Mavericks on ESPN, that Pelinka is the Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager of the Lakers, according to multiple reports. Pelinka was previously named the GM under Magic Johnson but this solidifies Pelinka’s power within the organization.

After the Lakers failed to put a proper team around LeBron James in 2018 with Magic Johnson, Pelinka has done a great job learning from the mistakes made by prioritizing rebounding, shooting, and defense around LeBron James this season.

Pelinka’s former client and Lakers legend Kobe Bryant said earlier this week that people should be “singing Rob’s praises” after he was widely criticized when the Lakers were struggling.

In addition to the Anthony Davis trade, Pelinka made smart signings that have helped L.A. greatly this season, including Danny Green, Alex Caruso, Jared Dudley, and Dwight Howard.

As her late father and former Lakers …

As her late father and former Lakers owner Jerry Buss groomed her to have a larger role with the franchise, he counseled Jeanie on how to ease that transition. At some point during those conversations, Jerry Buss offered advice that involved former NBA Commissioner David Stern. “My dad told me that if I ever needed help in the future that David would be somebody I could count on,” Jeanie Buss told USA TODAY Sports. “He always was there for me.”

“He stood up when everybody else didn’t …

“He stood up when everybody else didn’t know what to do,” Buss said of Stern. “We were all scared, concerned and uninformed because it was all happening in real time. But he didn’t flinch. He stood up and allowed Magic to come back into the league. He squashed the fears of spreading the virus through hugging and shaking hands, He really led us into an area that nobody really knew we were going. But he never blinked an eye. He stayed as a leader.”

Amick: Lakers refused Uncle Dennis demands, Clippers investigated by NBA

The Athletic’s Sam Amick reports the NBA investigated the Clippers after complaints from the Los Angeles Lakers regarding Kawhi’s uncle.

Christmas Day’s L.A. showdown between the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers is almost here, bringing back memories again of the Lakers chase of Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard.

The Lakers were reportedly upset with how Leonard’s camp handled things, particularly Leonard’s uncle Dennis Robertson, known more commonly as “Uncle Dennis.” But until now, it’s unclear what the demands were that upset the Lakers so much other than Leonard just deciding he wouldn’t join LeBron James.

The Athletic’s Sam Amick dropped a bombshell on Monday, illustrating the demands Uncle Dennis made of the Lakers that definitely fall outside of the confines of the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, which the Lakers refused to give Robertson.

The stories about Robertson’s wish list made their way to the league office soon after Leonard made his decision, with concerned parties reporting that Leonard’s uncle had asked pursuing teams for much, much more than a max contract (Kawhi ultimately signed a three-year, $103 million deal with the Clippers). Sources say the league was told that Robertson asked team officials for part ownership of the team, a private plane that would be available at all times, a house and  — last but certainly not least — a guaranteed amount of off-court endorsement money that they could expect if Leonard played for their team.

This is incredible stuff and from the looks of it, something that the NBA player’s union doesn’t want to make a habit of. Amick also reported that the NBA conducted an investigation on the Clippers, which didn’t turn up anything illicit, but that the league and union no longer want relatives of players handling negotiations unless they are certified agents.

Most understood the fallout of Leonard’s decision to join the Clippers from a basketball perspective. Even though he’s again had to miss several games to manage a knee injury that appears to be an issue that will follow him for the remainder of his career, many see the Clippers as the biggest obstacle in the way of the Lakers to the NBA Finals. But now we also understand the fallout Leonard’s free-agent negotiations have had on the league behind the scenes.

While people in the NBA and likely LeBron James himself knew what was going on, this all adds to the backdrop for these two teams to play for the second time this season. It will also be the first time the Lakers get a look at the Clippers with both Leonard and Paul George.

All of those items, to be clear, would fall well outside the confines of the league’s collective bargaining agreement. A source with knowledge of the Kawhi-Lakers talks said Robertson made those requests repeatedly to owner Jeanie Buss over the course of three phone calls that spanned several days, and that she made it clear that such perks were illegal and would not be considered.

LeBron James sends condolences to Jeanie Buss after loss of mother

The Los Angeles Lakers franchise and their Governor Jeanie Buss were hit with bad news, which LeBron James recognized on Monday.

The Los Angeles Lakers family was hit with the bad news that the club announced on Monday, related to the Buss family. Late on Monday afternoon, the Lakers announced the passing of JoAnn Buss, the wife of Dr. Jerry Buss and the mother of Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss.

Rather than flowers for the departed, the Lakers are asking for donations to the American Cancer Society or the Lakers Youth Foundation. Shortly after the news broke, LeBron James reached out on twitter to Jeanie Buss and sent a message that “Lakers Nation stands as one” during a difficult time for the Buss family.

Jerry Buss, the previous owner of the Lakers who was married to JoAnn Buss, passed away in 2013.

James and the Lakers have otherwise had a storybook season so far after starting the season with a 24-3 record through the first 27 games. The trade for Anthony Davis and their roster has worked out better than anyone had hoped it would, resulting in both a top-five offense and a top-five defense.
