Report: Former Auburn cornerback JD Rhym to transfer to Big 12 program

According to a report by 247Sports, Rhym is set to reunite with a former Auburn defensive backs coach at his new stop.

A former Auburn defensive back has reportedly found a new home.

According to a report by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, former Auburn cornerback [autotag]JD Rhym[/autotag] is set to reunite with former safeties coach [autotag]Zac Etheridge[/autotag] at Houston. Rhym joined the transfer portal on April 16 after spending two seasons on the Plains.

Rhym signed with Auburn as a four-star cornerback from Valdosta High School (Georgia) during the 2022 recruiting cycle. He was the No. 16 recruit from Georgia and the No. 20 cornerback in the nation. However, he failed to solidify consistent play at the position. In 16 games, Rhym made 20 stops with one interception and one pass deflection.

Rhym is the second former Auburn defender to find a new home this week reportedly. Former linebacker [autotag]Cam Riley[/autotag] announced this week that he will be joining Florida State’s roster for his final season of eligibility. Rhym is also one of 22 players from last season’s roster to enter the transfer portal. Out of those 22, 15 have found new homes.

Report: Auburn CB JD Rhym no longer with team

Rhym is reportedly leaving the program and will enter the transfer portal.

The Auburn secondary will enter the 2024 season depleted of experience, and one of its experienced members is no longer with the team.

According to a report from Auburn Undercover, cornerback [autotag]JD Rhym[/autotag] is no longer with the program. The report by Nathan King shows that Rhym is expected to enter the transfer portal after being dismissed from the program last week.

Rhym sustained a leg injury, as well as a suspension, which limited him to play in three games last season. In two seasons on the Plains, he recorded 20 total tackles with one pass deflection and an interception. His lone interception came in Auburn’s 45-13 win over Samford on Sept. 16.

Rhym took part in 54 snaps this season according to Pro Football Focus, and graded out at 70.2, which ranks No. 13 on the team. He was one of the best-graded tacklers on the team by grading out at 80.9, which was fourth-highest on the team.

With the departure of Rhym, Auburn has eight cornerbacks on its’ spring roster. The headliners this season are [autotag]Keionte Scott[/autotag] and [autotag]Kayin Lee[/autotag], who combined to record 62 tackles last season with 11 pass breakups.

Austin Keys to miss Saturday’s game at California due to thumb injury

The Ole Miss transfer saw limited action in Auburn’s opener, and will miss an undetermined amount of time going forward.

One of the most exciting transfers that Auburn landed last offseason was [autotag]Austin Keys[/autotag], a linebacker from Ole Miss.

Keys, who made 51 tackles in two seasons at Ole Miss, was expected to be a vital piece to Auburn’s linebacking corps this season. However, he was only able to play 18 snaps in Auburn’s season-opening victory over UMass last Saturday.

It appears that he will see less time on the field over the next several weeks. During the SEC teleconference on Wednesday, head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] told reporters that Keys underwent surgery following last Saturday’s game to repair an injured thumb and that he would “be out a while.”

Outside of Keys, four linebackers recorded 10 or more snaps last Saturday. [autotag]Larry Nixon III[/autotag] led the way with 23, followed by [autotag]Eugene Asante[/autotag]’s 20.

Several players that missed last week’s game such as [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag], [autotag]JD Rhym[/autotag], and [autotag]Nehemiah Pritchett[/autotag] all dressed out for Wednesday’s practice according to Justin Ferguson of the Auburn Observer.

Spring Football Preview: Projecting the cornerbacks

Could this be one of the deepest positions on the team heading into spring ball?

The final positional review comes with cornerbacks.

It is rare that a position group can lose its top player to the NFL and still be the strongest on the team, but that looks to be true for the Auburn cornerback room.

Auburn will be without one of the best corners in college football a season ago in Roger McCreary, but Auburn has made a habit of replacing their top corner and not a step.

The past couple seasons and they once again have a player ready to take over in Jaylin Simpson.

Simpson is clearly the top corner on the team, but Auburn has several solid candidates for the other corner spot, here is a look at the group ahead of spring practices.
