JD Notae and Mason Jones similarities continue as former invited to Elite Camp

JD Notae is creating a path to the NBA with this invitation.

Mason Jones’ last season at Arkansas was the stuff of legend. JD Notae’s was the same.

Jones has made his hay as one of the G League’s best players after declining a final season in Fayetteville. He was the third leading scorer in the league this year and had another stint in the NBA with Los Angeles.

Now Notae could join him.

The first-team SEC guard was invited to the G League Elite Camp from May 16-17 month in Chicago. Those who perform best there will then be invited to the NBA Scouting Combine on May 22. Jaylin Williams, Arkansas’ sophomore forward who declared for the draft but did not hire an agent, will be at the Combine, as well.

Notae could have returned to Arkansas for a super-senior season but chose to sign with an agent, instead. He averaged 18.3 points and 2.3 steals last year en route to an All-American third-team honor.

Can you talk about this year’s group? …

Can you talk about this year’s group? Pete Mickeal: Yeah. So, this year group, we have some really, really good names. A guy named Royce Hamm Jr.; he went to UNLV. I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people in the way he plays. He’s a four, five, but he can put it on the floor. He can shoot and he is really explosive. We also have Jaylen House, which is the son of Eddie House, a player that played for Miami heat. He averaged 19 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in college. Those are great stats in college. Also, Taze Moore that won NCAA slam dunk competition. We have JD Notae from Arkansas. Arkansas was a top five team in the nation, and he was arguably the best player. I mean, he averaged 19 points a game on a top five team in the nation. That’s very difficult to do. So, those are our bigger names. We have kids from Oregon, California, Ohio state Louisville, Kansas state, Florida, Houston, New Mexico.

Today, the NTX Combine announced former NBA stars Mike Bibby, Mo Evans, and Bob Thornton were named coaches of this year’s event along with NBA G League Coaches Ty Ellis and Xavier Silas. In addition, top NBA Draft prospects David Azore (UT Arlington) and JD Notae (Arkansas) will headline the collegiate player field along with Jacob Young (Oregon), Taze Moore (Houston), Royce Hamm Jr. (UNLV) and Jordan Shepherd (California).*

Anthony Black sets official signing date

Arkansas fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Anthony Black has set a date to sign with Eric Musselman’s program.

Since the beginning of the offseason, head coach [autotag]Eric Musselman[/autotag] has hit the recruiting trail hard and has seen positive results.

Despite losing talents such as [autotag]JD Notae[/autotag], [autotag]Stanley Umude[/autotag], and [autotag]Au’Diese Toney[/autotag], Arkansas Basketball has signed players from the Transfer Portal that have the skills to reload as the Razorbacks head into the 2022-23 season.

One of the key commitments that has not put pen to paper yet, is five-star guard from Duncanville, Texas, [autotag]Anthony Black[/autotag].

Black, who committed to Arkansas on March 28 during the week of the McDonald’s All-American game, joined Nick Smith and Jordan Walsh as fellow All-Americans and five-star pledges to commit to the program. The issue is that he has yet to sign.

Arkansas fans can now breathe a sigh of relief, as Black announces that he will sign his letter of intent on Wednesday, April 20, at his high school according to Richard Davenport of WholeHogSports.com.

Black is ranked as the No. 1 point guard in the nation, and the No. 2 overall prospect from the state of Texas. According to 247sports, Black received 21 offers, and took visits to six different programs.

Notae scores big in first game of Portsmouth Invitational

To prepare for the NBA, JD Notae is getting one last chance to be a collegiate athlete at the Portsmouth Invitational in Virginia.

In his curtain call as a collegiate athlete, [autotag]JD Notae[/autotag] is making a statement to NBA scouts.

Notae, as well as [autotag]Stanley Umude[/autotag], are competing in the Portsmouth Invitational this week in Portsmouth, Va. alongside 62 of the best seniors in college basketball.

This week, Notae is competing on the K&D Rounds Landscaping squad alongside Garrison Brooks of Mississippi State, Terrell Brown Jr. of Washington, and Brandon Horvath of Utah State, among others. In his first game of the invite, Notae scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds in K&D Rounds Landscaping’s 107-103 loss to Roger Brown’s on Wednesday.

Notae will compete again Thursday afternoon against Jani-King, which is headlined by Syracuse’s Buddy Boeheim.

As for Umude, his first game will tipoff at approximately 8 p.m. CT. Umude is competing for Mike Duman Auto Sales, and is teammates with players such as Isaiah Whaley of UConn, Fabian White of Houston, and Alex Barcello of BYU.

Notae, Umude invited to compete in Portsmouth Invitational

JD Notae and Stanley Umude get one more chance to compete as collegiate athletes.

Two of the major players in Arkansas Basketball’s success during the 2021-22 season will compete one more time as collegiate athletes.

Senior guards [autotag]Stanley Umude[/autotag] and [autotag]JD Nota[/autotag]e have been invited to compete in the Portsmouth Invitational that will be played April 13-16 in Portsmouth, Va. CC McCandless of Pig Trail Nation reported the news.

According to the Portsmouth Invitational website, 64 of the best college basketball players, who are seniors, from across the nation participate in a four-day, twelve-game tournament in front of representatives from every NBA team. NBA greats such as John Stockton, Scottie Pippen, and Jimmy Butler have competed in this event during its 67-year history.

The selection process is also explained on the website as well:

  • Players must certify that they have not been “paid to play” in any basketball game or tournament in accordance with NCAA By-Laws 2-3(I).

  • Players are selected for invitation to the PIT by the Player Selection Committee.

  • The PIT considers players from NCAA Divisions I, II and III; as well as NAIA for inclusion in the tournament.

  • When a player is selected, an invitation is sent to the men’s basketball office at their school. They are given a deadline to respond in order to reserve their spot in the tournament. Failure to respond by the deadline may result in the player being dropped for consideration and another player being invited in his place.

Both transfer student-athletes, Notae and Umude both contributed greatly to Arkansas’ successful season that ended with their second consecutive Elite 8 appearance.

In his only season as a Razorback, Umude averaged 11.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. For Notae, he emerged from being a solid bench option to one of the most valuable pieces to Arkansas’ success by leading the team in points with 18.3 points per game. Notae appeared in 36 games in 2021-22, starting in 35 of them.

Another Razorback enters name into Transfer Portal

Connor Vanover, who started in 37 games for Arkansas in two seasons, has announced that he will enter his name into the Transfer Portal.

As the offseason rolls on, more changes continue to come to the Arkansas Men’s Basketball roster.

In somewhat expected news, junior forward [autotag]Connor Vanover[/autotag] announced Wednesday on his Instagram page that he has entered his name into the Transfer Portal, joining KK Robinson, who added his name to the portal on April 2.

Vanover, a native of Little Rock, played two seasons for his home state’s flagship school after transferring from California at the conclusion of his freshman season in 2018-19.

In two seasons, Vanover appeared in 44 games for the Razorbacks, starting in 37 of those. The 7-3 forward averaged 5.1 points and 3.7 rebounds per game during his career at Arkansas. Vanover saw most of his playing time during his redshirt sophomore season in 2020-21, where he played an average of 17 minutes per game, starting in 27 games.

In the season-opener against Gardner-Webb on November 13, Vanover scored 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the 86-69 win over the Bulldogs. Vanover would go on to start in ten games at the five for the Razorbacks this season, but his playing time went down significantly due to the emergence of Stanley Umude’s production.

The announcement of Vanover to the Transfer Portal is the fifth revision to the 2021-22 roster for Arkansas Basketball. [autotag]JD Notae[/autotag] and [autotag]Au’Diese Toney[/autotag] announced earlier this week that they will enter their name into the NBA Draft after hiring an agent. [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] says that he will get more information about his NBA Draft stock before making the decision to leave, and [autotag]KK Robinson[/autotag] has entered his name into the Transfer Portal.

Arkansas guard Au’Diese Toney has declared for NBA Draft

The guard from Huntsville, Ala. averaged 10.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in his only season playing for Arkansas

He only spent one season at Arkansas, but it was a memorable one.

Arkansas guard Au’Diese Toney announced Tuesday that he will be declaring for the NBA Draft, and will sign with The Familie, an agency out of California, meaning that he can not decide later to return to Arkansas. The announcement was made via Twitter.

In his one season at Arkansas after playing three seasons at Pittsburgh, Toney was one of four Razorbacks to average double-figures, scoring 10.5 points per game, which was 4th highest on the team behind[autotag] JD Notae[/autotag], [autotag]Stanley Umude[/autotag], and [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag]. He was also second on the team in rebounds, pulling down 5.2 boards per contest.

The Huntsville, Ala. native is the third Razorback from the 2021-22 roster to either declare for the NBA Draft, or to test the waters. Sunday, fellow transfer JD Notae announced that he would be hiring an agent as well as declare for the NBA Draft.

Forward Jaylin Williams announced Monday that he would test the NBA Draft waters, but has not hired an agent, meaning that the door is open for him to return to the team this fall.

Jaylin Williams’ NBA decision is in

Arkansas sophomore forward Jaylin Williams had made a decision about his future, though he did leave the door open.

Arkansas sophomore forward [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] had a breakout season for the Razorbacks in 2021-22 and in doing so established himself as a legitimate NBA prospect.

On Monday, Williams announced his intention to test the NBA draft waters this summer. He will not hire an agent, however, leaving open an opportunity for him to return to Arkansas if the feedback he receives from the professional ranks is unsatisfactory.

“I will keep all my options open and, after going through the process and talking with my family, my support group and the Arkansas coaching staff, I will make an informed decision when the appropriate time comes,” Williams said.

The 6-foot-10 Fort Smith native was projected by The Athletic as the No. 35 pick to the Orlando Magic. That would make him an early second-round choice and three spots higher than former Arkansas center Daniel Gafford was selected in 2019.

Williams averaged 10.9 points and 9.8 rebounds in helping Arkansas to the Elite Eight this season. He especially established himself during SEC play, when he had 11 double-doubles.

Williams is the second Arkansas player to declare for the draft in the last three days. All-American senior guard JD Notae did so earlier in the week and Notae chose to hire an agent.
