Colorado women’s basketball Pac-12 Tournament recap: No. 3 seed Buffs hold off Oregon State

Colorado passed its quarterfinals test and will face Washington State in the Pac-12 semifinals

Upsets were the theme of the first two rounds of the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament as Utah, USC and Arizona had all fallen to lower seeds. Through the majority of the first half, it looked like No. 3 seed Colorado might be added to that list.

Oregon State played really well in the first half, at one point holding a nine-point lead over CU built mostly on the back of hot shooting from beyond the 3-point line. The Buffs were able to tie the game at the half thanks to a 9-2 run late in the second quarter.

CU had a trio of double-digit scorers in Frida Formann, Jaylyn Sherrod and Aaronette Vonleh, accounting for 16, 12 and 15 points, respectively. Quay Miller had a rare off-night, scoring two points and missing all nine of her field goal attempts.

Colorado will be right back at it as they take on another upset-minded squad in No. 7 seed Washington State on Friday at 9:30 p.m. MT in the semifinals. The Cougars are responsible for ending No. 2 seed Utah’s tournament run.

Final Pac-12 women’s basketball regular season assists per game leaders

Jaylyn Sherrod has excelled on both sides of the ball this season

Beyond the stats, Colorado women’s basketball senior Jaylyn Sherrod had a dominant 2022-23 regular season. The All-Pac-12 starting point guard excelled in a leadership role and has her Buffs set up for big things in the conference tournament and beyond.

In the regular season, which ended with a blowout of Cal on Saturday, Sherrod averaged a solid 11.1 points per game. But perhaps more importantly, the Birmingham, Alabama native was named to the all-conference defensive team.

Sherrod also managed to dish out 139 assists in 28 games played. Here’s where her assists per game mark ranked in the Pac-12 now that the regular season is complete:

Winning brings respect and with a 13-5 record to wrap Pac-12 play, four CU Buffs women took home a total of six conference awards.

As announced Tuesday, Jaylyn Sherrod and Quay Miller earned a spot on the All-Pac-12 team while Frida Formann and Aaronnette Vonleh were honorable mentions. Vonleh was also named co-most improved player of the year along with Arizona’s Shaina Pellington, and Sherrod made the all-defensive team.

Colorado, which was ranked No. 20 in the latest AP college women’s basketball poll, finished third in the Pac-12 and will enjoy a first-round bye in the conference tournament. The No. 3 seed Buffs are set to challenge either No. 6 USC or No. 11 Oregon State on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

After the Pac-12 Tournament, Colorado is essentially an NCAA Tournament lock for the second consecutive season.

“I’m so proud of every member of our team for all that they have poured into our program all year long,” head coach JR Payne said. “It is truly an honor for several members of our team to be recognized as all-conference players. The Pac-12 is full of incredibly talented young women. For our players to be recognized in such an elite group speaks to the talent that we have here at Colorado and the amount of time that they have poured into their craft.”

Colorado women’s basketball recap: No. 21 Buffs close out regular season with a W

The No. 21 #cubuffs secured a dominant win on senior day

The No. 21 Colorado Buffaloes were determined to stop their first losing streak of the season and they did it with a bang, putting up a season-high 95 points in a 95-69 thrashing of the Cal Bears on Saturday.

Aaronette Vonleh had a monster day, scoring 25 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field. Frida Formann returned from an illness to add 19 points and Jaylyn Sherrod scored 16 points with six assists. The Buffaloes only held a 43-37 lead after two quarters, but they outscored Cal 52-22 in the second half to secure a 22-7 regular season record.

Colorado will now enter the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament as the No. 3 seed with a first-round bye. The winner of No. 6 USC-No. 11 Oregon State will face the Buffs in round two on Thursday.

A special shoutout goes to Tayanna Jones, who was honored for senior day.

Colorado women’s basketball recap: No. 3 Stanford outlasts No. 21 Buffs in double OT

No. 3 Stanford outlasted the No. 21 #cubuffs in double overtime

The No. 21 Colorado Buffaloes had their chances to score a major upset over No. 3 Stanford, but they ran out of gas in a 73-62 double overtime loss on Thursday afternoon.

The Cardinal women outscored CU 13-2 in the second overtime period.

Colorado held a one-point lead when Jaylyn Sherrod was fouled with six seconds to play in the first overtime. Sherrod missed both of her free throw attempts to give the Cardinal new life and they took advantage.

The Buffaloes were shorthanded as Frida Formann missed the game due to illness. Sherrod and forward Tayanna Jones stepped up in her absence, with Sherrod scoring 19 points and Jones chipping in nine points and seven rebounds.

After taking a 19-5 lead midway through the second quarter, CU had an opportunity to put away Stanford, which began the game 1-for-21 from the field. But the Cardinal corrected their offensive woes and surpassed the Buffs early in the third quarter.

While the final score was disappointing, the Buffs should hold their heads high knowing that they took the No. 3 team in the country to double overtime. Especially on defense, Colorado proved once again that it can play with the best in the country.

The Buffs will look to build some momentum heading into the Pac-12 Tournament as they close out their regular season against Cal in Boulder on Saturday.

Jaylyn Sherrod named Pac-12 Player of the Week

Jaylyn Sherrod earned some recognition after leading No. 21 Colorado’s home sweep last weekend

For the seventh time in program history, a Colorado Buffaloes women’s basketball player has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Week.

Jaylyn Sherrod, who also earned the award last season, was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week on Monday after leading the No. 21 Buffs to a weekend sweep of the Washington Schools.

Sherrod got off to a hot start by matching a career-high with 27 points in a come-from-behind win against Washington State on Friday. She also added three rebounds, two assists and three steals. On Sunday, Sherrod was a key factor on defense as the Buffs allowed the Washington Huskies just 43 points. She also played distributor on offense, leading the Buffs with six assists while also contributing eight points, four rebounds and one steal.

Colorado women’s basketball: Jaylyn Sherrod named Preseason All-Pac-12

Jaylyn Sherrod could dictate how things go for the Buffs this season

In my opinion, Colorado women’s basketball guard Jaylyn Sherrod will dictate how successful the Buffs are this season.

There’s of course some added pressure on Sherrod now that Mya Hollingshed has departed Boulder, but I’m confident that her confidence will culminate in a huge senior season.

The media is also optimistic about Sherrod as she was named a Preseason All-Pac-12 player on Monday. Colorado forward Quay Miller, who will join Sherrod at Pac-12 Media Day, and guard Kindyll Wetta were also honorable mentions.

The Buffs’ big three begin their season with an exhibition on Nov. 1 against Adams State before hosting New Mexico State on Nov. 7 for the season-opener.

Colorado women’s basketball beats Mines in exhibition

11 different Buffaloes scored in an exhibition against Mines.

The Colorado women’s basketball team kicked off its season on Monday night with a commanding 63-52 exhibition win over the Colorado School of Mines. Junior guard Jaylyn Sherrod, who missed the latter part of last season with an injury, led the Buffs with nine points.

A few new faces also chipped in to beat the Orediggers. Highly-touted freshman guard and Colorado native Kindyll Wetta tied the team-high of six rebounds and led with four assists. Washington transfer Quay Miller also had six rebounds in her CU debut.

“Early in the season, especially this early, there’s going to be some really good things and there’s going to be some really bad things and a whole lot in the middle,” head coach JR Payne said. “I thought we were pretty typical. I thought we had spurts where we did some really good things and transitioned defensively in spurts. We were not so good in spurts as well, but that’s ok. As long as we continue to learn, grow and attack those areas that weren’t as sharp as we wanted.”

One of those bad spurts happened in the fourth quarter when Mines ended the game on a 15-2 run. But Colorado also led by as many as 26 points during the contest. Another good omen was that 11 different Buffaloes scored and the team shot 47.2% from the field.

“I thought everyone that came in the game gave tremendous effort,” Payne said. “No one was perfect, offensively or defensively, but I thought our effort was really good.”

The Buffs will play their first official game at Oklahoma State on Nov. 10.
