ESPN’s Tim Bontemps explains why he’s out on a potential Jaylen Brown – Kevin Durant trade

For Bontemps, the risk outweighs any short-term boost such a swap might create.

ESPN analyst Tim Bontemps has been covering the Boston Celtics for some time and knows the team as well as anyone in the national NBA media. So it was notable when he weighed in against a trade of Brooklyn Nets superstar forward Kevin Durant for Celtics star wing Jaylen Brown (and presumably much more in terms of players and draft assets) on a recent episode of the ESPN ‘Hoops Collective” podcast.

For Bontemps, having two young wing players has been the most important currency a team can have in pursuit of an NBA title in today’s league, and Boston could have that for over a half decade if it can convince Brown to re-sign.

The age, injury history and other factors that come with Durant are also worth consideration cautions the ESPN analyst.

Watch the clip embedded above to hear his take on why Boston ought to avoid a Durant for Brown swap.

‘Chemistry is half the battle,’ says Celtics’ Jayson Tatum; is he dropping a hint about a proposed Jaylen Brown-Kevin Durant swap?

Should we be reading between the lines about a potential Jaylen Brown – KD swap?

It is not uncommon for NBA front office executives in today’s NBA to seek the most talent they can get their hands on via trades and free agency, figuring out the fit between the players later.

You would think a team still so close to the Kyrie Irving experience as the Boston Celtics are might be warier of such an approach. Yet the team is in the news for rumors they might be interested in swapping Boston star wing Jaylen Brown for veteran superstar Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets.

Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum found himself asked directly and indirectly about such a deal, and he has been cautious with his words. But asked by a reporter at his annual pro camp how hard it was to find and keep the kind of chemistry that helped Boston get to within two wins of an NBA title, Tatum did not mince words.

“Chemistry is half the battle. You can have a great team with great talent, and not necessarily jell well together,” suggested the former Duke star via NBC Sports Boston. “The guys … we figured it out in January, and never looked back.”

It can be hard to read between the lines in such situations, but from where we sit, it doesn’t sound like the Celtics star is looking to mess with what’s been working so well for Boston.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Tim Bontemps question the wisdom of a Jaylen Brown-Kevin Durant trade for Celtics

The proposed trade has come under increasing scrutiny in recent days.

While the rumbles of a potential trade of Boston Celtics star wing Jaylen Brown to the Brooklyn Nets for veteran superstar swingman Kevin Durant appear to have stalled if they ever even had any traction to speak of in the first place, the debate continues on with seemingly few supporters coming out of the woodwork suggesting such a deal would make sense for Boston.

With Brown playing as the Celtics’ best player in the 2022 NAB Finals at just 22 years old with a relatively solid injury history and a seeming connection to the city of the team that drafted him and with much popularity with that team’s fans, to risk it all for a player with a concerningly advanced age and injury history has increasingly come under scrutiny.

“Why would a Boston team that was two wins away from winning it all trade away two key components of its roster? Is Durant too enticing to pass up if you are the Celtics?” asked Marks.

Are the Boston Celtics disrespecting Jaylen Brown with the Kevin Durant trade rumors?

The Georgia native has been critical for this team becoming so good.

Are the Boston Celtics disrespecting star wing Jaylen Brown by letting it look like he is being dangled in a potential trade framework for veteran Brooklyn Nets star forward Kevin Durant?

The Georgia native was probably the Celtics’ most consistent player in the 2022 NBA Finals, with Boston getting to within two games of winning an NBA title.

Despite this and the constant improvement, we have seen in Brown’s game over the years, it appears the Celtics might actually be considering such a deal. There has been no explicit rejection of such rumors by Boston President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens or the rest of the front office.

The hosts of the ESPN “Swagu and Perk” show recently debated whether the Celtics are screwing things up with one of their most important players.

Watch the video embedded above to get their views on how Boston has been handling this potentially explosive rumor.

Should Celtics’ Jaylen Brown be taking his name being in trade talks for Kevin Durant as a compliment?

The Celtics star forward might, but could take it as a slight just as easily.

Should star Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown be taking hearing his name in trade rumors that would see the Celtics swap the Boston forward for veteran Brooklyn Nets star swingman Kevin Durant as a compliment?

Or is it more likely the player who was often the Celtics’ best player in the 2022 NBA Finals might see that as a slight?

We can say what we believe to be true with the best logic in the world behind it, but it ultimately needs to resonate with the person in question — Brown — to have the sort of impact some of us believe being mentioned in the same breath as Durant, James, Harden, Damian Lillard and Anthony Davis would have.

On the flip side, that is a lot of names to have been tied to in trade talks over the years. Could it end up backfiring on Boston?

The host of the “Locked On Celtics” podcast, John Karalis, makes his case why the Georgia native ought to take such talk as a compliment.

Watch the clip embedded above to see why the “Locked On” host thinks that is the case.

Celtics journalist emeritus Bob Ryan is all the way out on trading Jaylen Brown for Kevin Durant

The legendary beat writer is vehemently against the prospective deal.

There are a growing number of voices souring on the idea of trading star Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown (and other players and assets) for Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant, a trade rumored to have been discussed by the two clubs in recent weeks.

From Tim Bontemps to Tim Eisen, all the way to Celtics champ Brian Scalabrine, there is no shortage of skeptical or even opposed analysts who dislike the deal.

Now throwing his hat in the ring is CLNS Media’s Bob Ryan. Yet another voice suggesting the Celtics are better off with Jaylen Brown in the long AND short term rather than Durant, the Boston sports journalist emeritus laid out why he does not support such a trade in a recent podcast.

Check out the CLNS Media “Ryan and Goodman” pod embedded below to hear Ryan explain his thinking.

Celtics alumnus, broadcaster Brian Scalabrine expresses skepticism over Jaylen Brown-Kevin Durant swap

The former Celtics champ worries Boston will end up on the wrong end of the deal courtesy of Father Time.

The notion of swapping star Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown for veteran Brooklyn Nets star forward Kevin Durant might be intriguing to some, but there is an increasing number of analysts expressing doubt about the wisdom of such a prospective deal.

Add to them former Boston champion big man and current Celtics broadcaster Brian Scalabrine, who recently made an appearance on Sirius XM Radio to share his views on such a deal. “My only concern with Kevin Durant — and I’m not qualified to answer this — is I have no idea how long (a) 7-foot long, lanky, super highly-skilled (player) is going to last.

“I have no reference point,” he would admit. “Everybody ages differently.”

Scal is right about everyone aging differently, the idea of three seasons after next potentially stuck with the Celtics with little to nothing to remedy a situation should a worst-case or even underwhelming return on their investment play out should give us all considerable pause.

[pickup_prop id=”26317″]

“If (KD) falls off the cliff somewhere down the road, then that’s going to be a tough move because you’re giving up a young, hungry, hardworking (player in Brown) for a guy that I don’t know how much longer he has,” speculated Scalabrine, not even touching on potential further implications of such a deal.

What role might Ime Udoka be playing in the Jaylen Brown – Kevin Durant trade rumors?

Boston’s head coach was an assistant with the Brooklyn Nets before his tenure with the Celtics.

What role could Ime Udoka be playing in any trade talks between the Boston Celtics and the Brooklyn Nets that were rumored to have been held between the two ball clubs to discuss what trading star Celtics wing Jaylen Brown for veteran Nets star swingman Kevin Durant?

The Boston head coach was recently a defensive specialist assistant coach for Brooklyn during Durant’s tenure with that team. Could there be a relationship between the two that encouraged the Celtics to kick the tires on such a swap? Or are the rumors something more akin to what every team able to do so making calls to the Nets in order to fulfill their duty of due diligence as a competent front office?

The host of the CLNS Media “Winning Plays” podcast Brian Robb was recently joined by NBC Sports Boston analyst Chris Forsberg to discuss this and a number of other aspects of these rumors.

Watch the clip embedded above to get their takes on Udoka’s role in all of this and much more.

‘Don’t trade for Durant’: one prominent analyst’s advice for the Boston Celtics

The enthusiasm for dealing for KD is not as high for many.

The momentum for a trade of Brooklyn Nets star forward Kevin Durant for a package built around star Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown appears to be dead in the water — much to the delight of many Celtics fans.

But it is not just a subset of Boston fans who would prefer to see the team that came within two games of an NBA title run it back with additional reinforcements Danilo Gallinari and Malcolm Brogdon. A growing number of analysts not only doubt the trade will happen but are openly questioning the wisdom of swapping Brown and unnamed other players and assets for an aging star with questions surrounding how long he can play at a level worth the haul the Brooklyn Nets will demand.

Among those analysts is the host of the eponymous “Rich Eisen Show.” Eisen recently made his case on why Boston ought to stand pat.

Watch the clip embedded above to hear him explain why the Celtics should love the one their with.

Would it be a mistake for the Boston Celtics to include Marcus Smart in any deal for Kevin Durant?

He was the Defensive Player of the Year, after all.

Would it be a mistake for the Boston Celtics to include 2022 Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart in any potential trade for Brooklyn Nets star forward Kevin Durant? Putting aside the polarizing question of whether such a move makes sense in the first place, such attention has rightfully focused on the focal point of a hypothetical deal in Celtics star wing Jaylen Brown.

But the trade would need more included for both salary cap reasons and Brooklyn Nets interests, meaning the Flower Mound native would be a prime candidate for inclusion. Would it make sense to add Smart given how much Boston’s defense would suffer?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “A-List” podcast recently debated this question on their most recent episode.

Watch the clip embedded above to see what they have to say about such a hypothetical deal.
