Panthers 2024 draft pick to miss time with high-ankle sprain

Panthers HC Dave Canales provided a few injury updates following Thursday night’s preseason opener.

The Carolina Panthers’ preseason opener, which resulted in a 17-3 loss to the New England Patriots on Thursday night, also resulted in a few injuries.

Head coach Dave Canales provided some updates on the setbacks this afternoon, following the team’s first practice since the exhibition outing. He started with second-year offensive lineman Cade Mays.

“Cade had a shoulder—an AC sprain,” Canales said. “So that’ll be a couple of weeks for us to get him back out there.”

Mays played 28 offensive snaps in the contest, one where the Panthers were already low on frontline depth. He recorded 25 of those snaps at center and three at right guard.

Canales then addressed the status of rookie defensive lineman Jaden Crumedy.

“And then Crumedy—that was a high-ankle sprain,” he added. “I’m not sure the exact timetable there. I’ll be able to get you more information on that.”

Crumedy was selected in the sixth round of the 2024 draft.

Prior to the start of today’s session, the Panthers signed defensive lineman Jayden Peevy, who spent much of the 2023 season on the team’s practice squad.

Panthers bringing back free-agent defensive lineman

The Panthers have signed DL Jayden Peevy, who spent much of the 2023 season as part of the team’s practice squad.

As announced prior to Saturday’s practice, the Carolina Panthers have signed defensive lineman Jayden Peevy—who spent part of the 2023 campaign as part of the team’s practice squad. News of the addition was first reported on by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston earlier this morning.

The Bellaire, Texas native played his college ball at nearby Texas A&M University from 2017 to 2021. Over his five seasons in College Station, he amassed 138 total tackles (20.0 for a loss), 7.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one interception and seven passes defensed.

His best year came as a senior, when he started all 11 games for the Aggies. He would also be the team’s recipient of their Defensive Mr. Dependable Award in 2021.

Peevy cracked into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans last spring. After making their initial 53-man roster to begin his rookie season, he was released and signed back to their practice squad.

After another parting of ways with the Titans a few weeks later, the 6-foot-5, 308-pounder joined Carolina’s practice squad on Oct. 11. He did not appear in a game for the Panthers in 2023.

Ex-Titans DL Jayden Peevy signs futures deal with Browns

Former Titans UDFA and DL Jayden Peevy has signed a futures deal with the Browns.

Former Tennessee Titans undrafted free-agent signing and defensive lineman Jayden Peevy has found a new home. The Cleveland Browns announced on Tuesday that they have signed Peevy to a futures deal.

After signing with the Titans in 2022 as a UDFA, Peevy spent almost the entire season on the practice squad but appeared in just one game, playing 27 snaps on defense.

He stuck in Tennessee through the 2023 offseason and garnered some hype after winning one of the team’s offseason awards and posting a strong showing in training camp.

However, Peevy came crashing back down to earth once the season started.

He was a healthy scratch in Week 1, played four snaps in Week 2, and then was waived and brought back on the practice squad. Peevy lasted just a few weeks there before being let go.

Following his stint in Tennessee, Peevy landed on the practice squad of the Carolina Panthers, where he spent the rest of the season. He didn’t play a single snap for Carolina, though.

Titans promote Kyle Peko, waive Jayden Peevy among 3 moves

The Titans made a trio of moves on Tuesday.

The Tennessee Titans made a trio of moves on Tuesday, with two having to do with the active roster.

The team announced it has promoted defensive lineman Kyle Peko from the practice squad to the 53-man roster while also waiving fellow defensive lineman Jayden Peevy.

In addition, the team released veteran defensive lineman Michael Dwumfour from the practice squad. Chances are Peevy will be brought back in his place once he clears waivers but that has not been confirmed.

A 2022 undrafted free-agent signing, Peevy was an offseason darling and was one of head coach Mike Vrabel’s offseason award winners before making the initial 53-man roster.

However, he was inactive in Week 1 and played just four defensive snaps in Week 2.

Peko, who is in his second stint with Tennessee after playing in eight games (three starts) with the Titans in 2021, has played a total of 49 snaps over two games, including 27 in Week 2. He was the preferred choice off the bench over both Peevy and Naquan Jones.

Former Aggie makes the Titans 53-man roster after a strong pre-season

Former Aggie Jayden Peevy makes a big jump in year two and earned a spot on the Titans 53-man roster for the 2023 season.

The Titans have officially dropped their initial 53-roster, and former Texas A&M defensive lineman Jayden Peevy made the cut. Followers of the Tennessee Titans have been talking about how much he’s improved since signing as an undrafted free agent after the 2022 NFL draft, especially this past off-season.

After spending the majority of his rookie year on the Titans practice squad, all indications are that not only will he be on the game-day roster but will be part of the two-deep rotation this year. Defensive line coach Terrell Williams said as much after a recent practice.

“Well, I’ll say this, there ain’t no guarantees they’re going to be playing behind anybody,” Williams proclaimed. “With what some of those guys are doing, particularly Peevy, has made a big jump. He’s worked hard and done what we’ve asked him to do.”

The arrow is pointing up for Peevy, and we hope he continues to thrive in his development, leading to a long career.

Titans’ Jayden Peevy quickly becoming a player to watch

After receiving significant praise from his coaches this week, Titans DL Jayden Peevy is quickly becoming a player to watch moving forward.

Tennessee Titans 2022 undrafted free-agent signing and defensive lineman Jayden Peevy entered training camp as seemingly just another guy on the roster bubble.

But Peevy, who spent most of last season on the practice squad, has managed to stand out just a bit more than most this offseason, with the first sign of that coming when he was named among the team’s offseason award winners.

Another sign of Peevy making major progress came on Thursday, when defensive line coach Terrell Williams noted that the Texas A&M product has made a “huge improvement” this year.

“I’ve seen the foot quickness. I’ve seen the use of his hands, the pad level,” Williams said, per Tyler Rowland of AllTitans. “All of those things have improved. From where he was last year in training camp to where he is today, it’s been a huge improvement.

“Some that is just growth. Sometimes you bring a rookie in, whether they are a first-round pick or an undrafted free agent, just year to year learning how to work at this pro level is just different.”

While a great endorsement for Peevy, that wasn’t the most interesting thing the Titans’ defensive line coach said about the 2022 undrafted free agent.

When asked about the prospect of guys like Peevy and Naquan Jones playing behind the team’s projected starters in Denico Autry, Teair Tart and Jeffery Simmons, Williams said that isn’t exactly an automatic, and he invoked Peevy’s name in particular.

“Well, I’ll say this, there ain’t no guarantees they’re going to be playing behind anybody,” Williams said. “With what some of those guys are doing, in particular Peevy, has made a big jump. He’s worked hard and done what we’ve asked him to do. So, we’ll see how it turns out, that’s what training camp is for, but because someone started for us or played for us last year doesn’t mean they’re going to have that same spot. You got to earn it everyday and that’s how we function around here.”

Of course, that might just be coach speak and/or Williams trying to light a fire under one or more of his guys upfront, but at the very least that’s something to put into our back pocket for now.

Williams hasn’t been the only Titans coach to heap praise on Peevy recently.

Before practice on Tuesday, defensive coordinator Shane Bowen said the 23-year-old’s development has been “tremendous”, something he at least partly credits to the defensive lineman dropping some weight.

“Peevy has taken advantage of it (playing with pads),” Bowen said, per John Glennon of Nashville Post. “His development through the spring, coming in this first week of camp, has been tremendous, something that’s got to continue.

“We need him to be a good player, to develop into a good player for us. I think the drop in weight has been incredibly important for him and his production, his ability to move.”

The Titans are no strangers to finding diamonds in the rough along the defensive line, with Teair Tart being a shining example of that.

It remains to be seen if Peevy will have that kind of success, but he certainly seems to be on the right track and is now someone to watch, not only for a roster spot, but for a significant role, also.

Titans’ Mike Vrabel names team’s 6 offseason award winners

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel recently listed the six players who won the team’s offseason award.

Over the last few years, Tennessee Titans head coach, Mike Vrabel, has made it a point of emphasis to publicly acknowledge the six players who had a strong offseason leading up to training camp.

This year’s winners on the offensive side of the ball were quarterback Ryan Tannehill, tight end Thomas Odukoya, and interior lineman Corey Levin.

As for the defense, Tennessee’s three winners were defensive lineman Jayden Peevy, inside linebacker Jack Gibbens (Dr. Gibby), and outside linebacker Arden Key.

However, Vrabel did make sure to mention how second-year signal caller, Malik Willis, who he also stated made a “glaring improvement” throughout the offseason. Vrabel said Willis was “very, very close.”

The Titans head coach chose to go with his starting quarterback, who seemingly spent the entire offseason training and rehabbing his ankle in Tennessee as opposed to previous years when he would occasionally stay away from the facility for lengthy periods at a time to train on his own.

Vrabel also went out of his way to individually praise the noticeable improvements made by each of the other recipients on the list, while continuing to harp on the contagious energy Key brings to the entire building.

Unfortunately, these offseason awards have seldom turned into anything meaningful in terms of performance during the season. For example, last year’s award winners included Dillon Radunz, Tory Carter, Dez Fitzpatrick, Caleb Farley, and Amani Hooker.

DeMarcus Walker was the most successful offseason winner from the 2022 group, producing career-highs in practically every major statistical category by season’s end.

Let’s hope the majority of this year’s recipients of the offseason recognition are able to translate the success they had in the spring and summer to the upcoming fall and winter.

NFL Preseason Week 1: Where to watch the Texas A&M rookie debuts

NFL Preseason Week 1: Where to watch the Texas A&M rookie debuts

Football season is finally here! With the 2022 college football season starting in 15 days, and Texas A&M kicking off their season on September 3rd, the NFL Preseason Week 1 is officially upon us. Let’s take a short trip back to late April during the 2022 NFL Draft, as four former Aggies were taken in the 1st, 3rd, and 4th rounds, while several notable players were signed as undrafted free agents days after the conclusion of the draft. Here are the players drafted this year, and those ready to make their NFL debut this weekend:

  • Round 1, Pick 15 for the Houston Texans: Guard, Kenyon Green.
  • Round 3, Pick 84 for the Pittsburgh Steelers: Defensive lineman, DeMarvin Leal
  • Round 4, Pick 117 for the New York Jets: Defensive end, Micheal Clemons
  • Round 4, Pick 123 for the Los Angeles Chargers: Running back, Isaiah Spiller
  •   UDFA for the Tennessee Titans: Defensive lineman, Jayden Peevy,
  • UDFA for the Pittsburgh Steelers: Defensive end, Tyree Johnson (recently cut)
  • UDFA for the San Franciso 49ers: Safety, Leon O’Neal (recently cut)
  • UDFA for the Dallas Cowboys: Linebacker, Aaron Hansford (recently cut)
  • UDFA for the Green Bay Packers; Offensive lineman, Jahmir Johnson (early cut)

Look for Green, Leal, Clemson, and Spiller to shine as they look to earn their spot with the franchise that took a chance on them, continuing to show the toughness and relentless workmanship developed during their time at Texas A&M. Now, here is the game, place, and time each player will be appearing in this weekend.

7 under-the-radar Titans to watch during the preseason

Shaun Calderon lists seven under-the-radar Titans players to watch during the preseason.

Although it’s only the preseason, the Tennessee Titans finally play football this week when they travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens on Aug. 11 at M&T Bank Stadium.

These exhibition games are largely seen as irrelevant to the casual football fan; however, the preseason has several intriguing storylines that go well beyond the scoreboard.

This article is going to identify seven players who aren’t exactly stealing the headlines, but may end up stealing a roster spot when it’s all said and done.

The majority of the players on this list will likely be playing a ton in the coming weeks. Truth be told, a lot of these players are probably competing to stick around via a spot on the practice squad more than anything else.

Nonetheless, there are always those hidden gems every year who sneak their way onto the final 53-man roster.

It should be noted that rookies who were recently selected in the 2022 NFL Draft were excluded from this list since they naturally garner a ton of attention in the preseason.

With all that said, let’s take a look at which under-the-radar players we should be keeping a close eye on in preseason games over the coming weeks.

Jayden Peevy named Titans UDFA most likely to make roster

The Titans reportedly signed 12 undrafted free agents following the 2022 NFL draft.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbyh7crnrcs3ypf player_id=none image=https://titanswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Tennessee Titans reportedly added 12 undrafted free agents following the 2022 NFL draft, although the team has yet to confirm them.

According to reports, the Titans inked defensive lineman Jayden Peevy, defensive back Michael Griffin II, defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu, EDGE David Anenih, offensive lineman Andrew Rupcich, running back Julius Chestnut, defensive lineman Haskell Garrett, cornerback Tre Swelling, linebacker Jack Gibbens, offensive lineman Hayden Howerton, wide receiver Reggie Roberson, and kicker Caleb Shudak.

Of those 12, The 33rd Team believes the Texas A&M product, Peevy, is the most likely to make the 53-man roster out of training camp. Here’s why:

While the Titans have some big names making a difference upfront, they are still relatively thin at the position. Peevy is a project player at this point but is an intriguing signing thanks to his upside and the low risk of the signing. Peevy stands at 6050 with 35-inch arms, which can be a nightmare for smaller IOL.

Titans general manager Jon Robinson has had success with defensive lineman UDFAs in recent years. Teair Tart and Naquan Jones are two examples, with both working their way into significant roles upfront.

However, Tennessee’s current group of defensive linemen is pretty deep. On top of Jeffery Simmons, Denico Autry, Tart and Jones, the Titans also sport Larrell Murchison, their 2020 fifth-round pick.

Murchison isn’t a lock to make the roster, but the other four are. That could leave just one spot up for grabs after Tennessee carried five defensive linemen on their initial 53-man roster in 2021.

Pencil my vote in as Roberson, who would have certainly been drafted if not for injury concerns. When healthy, the SMU product is an explosive playmaker who can also contribute as a returner.
