Los Angeles Clippers assistant Jay Larranaga reportedly declines opportunity to return to the Boston Celtics

The former Boston assistant reportedly prefers to remain in Los Angeles.

It appears the Boston Celtics will not have a reunion with Los Angeles Clippers assistant head coach Jay Larranaga. The former Celtics assistant turned down a chance to return to his former team to help interim head coach Joe Mazzulla in the wake of the Ime Udoka scandal, according to reporting by Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated.

Per Mannix, Larranaga “will remain on (Los Angeles head coach) Ty Lue’s staff with the Clippers.” The former Celtics assistant reportedly prefers to remain with his current team, which is one of the NBA’s 2023 title favorites.

Boston had received permission from the Clippers to speak to Larranaga about a potential return, but instead finds itself needing to look elsewhere to provide Mazzulla some help.

Report: Celtics looking at ‘various paths and options’ to support interim head coach Joe Mazzulla

Per the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, the team “has already spoken with several other candidates”.

If former Boston Celtics and current Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Jay Larranaga is not into the idea of making a return to the Celtics to help interim head coach Joe Mazzulla deal with the ongoing fallout of the Ime Udoka scandal, the team reportedly has other options to turn to if needed.

Per the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, the team “has already spoken with several other candidates” and are looking into “various paths and options” to support Mazzulla in a season the Celtics are hoping to contend for an NBA title.

Managing a finely-tuned machine that is an NBA roster for someone with no head coaching experience is by no means an easy task, and mixing the expectations of contention only complicates that proposition.

Add the issues that led to the unexpected elevation of Mazzulla to interim head coach in the first place, and it makes all the sense in the world to get him some help.

But nailing that hire probably requires even more scrutiny than usual given the circumstances, so it’s reassuring to hear the team is proceeding carefully.

Report: Clippers, Ex-Cs assistant Jay Larranaga granted permission to speak to Celtics

The former Boston assistant coach is a target of interest to help interim head coach Joe Mazzulla this season in the wake of the Udoka scandal.

The Boston Celtics have reportedly been granted permission by the Los Angeles Clippers to speak to assistant coach Jay Larranaga, a nine-season veteran of the Celtics bench. Boston reportedly sought permission to speak with about assisting interim Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla in the wake of head coach Ime Udoka’s season-long suspension.

The news, reported by the LA Times’ Andrew Greif, signals at least a passing interest from Larranaga in returning to the team he left after the Udoka hire ahead of the 2021-22 NBA season. With Mazzulla tasked with directing a championship-caliber squad with no head coaching experience due to extenuating circumstances, there had been speculation Boston might add to Mazzulla’s bench.

Larranaga, who, like Mazzulla, has been a popular name in head coaching searches in recent years, also has no experience in the top job at the NBA level, but would help fill in the gaps left by not only Udoka’s castigation but also the loss of top assistant Will Hardy to the Utah Jazz earlier in the season.

Woj: Celtics seeking permission to talk to LAC assistant Jay Larranaga

The 47-year old Larranaga first took a job with the Celtics in 2012.

With the shocking suspension of Ime Udoka and the subsequent promotion of Joe Mazzulla to the role of interim head coach, the Boston Celtics are rebuilding their coaching staff on the fly. The season tips off in just a few weeks, and, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Boston could look to add a familiar face to the sideline before then.

Woj is reporting Boston is seeking permission from the Los Angeles Clippers to chat with former assistant Jay Larranaga about possibly joining the Celtics bench. Larranaga was with Boston for nine seasons before joining LA last year.

The 47-year old Larranaga first took a job with the Celtics in 2012. He was a top candidate to replace head coach Doc Rivers before the position was ultimately offered to Brad Stevens. For nearly the next decade, Larranaga turned down collegiate head coaching opportunities to remain a Celtics assistant.

Larranaga served as a top advisor to Brad Stevens for seven seasons. That experience helped him land a new assistant gig with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Now, perhaps, Larranaga will once against be serving Stevens in Boston as a trusted ally.

Report: Celtics assistant Jay Larranaga not expected to return

As Celtics head coach Ime Udoka begins to put together his coaching staff, current assistant Jay Larranga isn’t expected to return.

As new Celtics head coach Ime Udoka begins to build out his coaching staff, it seems a familiar face will not be a part of it.

Reported by Clevis Murray of The Athletic, longtime Celtics assistant Jay Larranaga is not expected to return to the Celtics next season on Udoka’s staff.

Larranaga has been a Celtics assistant since 2012 and as Murray noted, interviewed for the head job with Boston following the departure of Doc Rivers and promotion of Brad Stevens.

As for Udoka’s staff, the only addition so far is Spurs assistant Will Hardy. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Udoka is targeting 13-year NBA veteran and current University of the Pacific head coach Damon Stoudamire to join his staff.

There were plenty of safety rules in …

There were plenty of safety rules in place, and it made the environment different. There is usually a coterie of observers and helpers when Tatum is shooting jump shots. Maybe two coaches to rebound, another to offer instruction, and sometimes even a member of the medical staff to oversee it all. But in this case, there was just assistant coach Jay Larranaga, wearing a mask and gloves and wondering whether he still had the legs to chase down the errant shots all by himself. “I’m lucky Tatum doesn’t ever miss,” Larranaga said. “So I just stay under the hoop. He looks like he’s in midseason form right now.”

Despite that uncertainty, there did not …

Despite that uncertainty, there did not ever appear to be a time when Tatum lost his focus, according to Larranaga. “It’s frustrating when you’re in the midst of a really great season and having the responsibility that he likes and has wanted to have on the team,” Larranaga said. “It’s frustrating to have the season interrupted. “But he’s a pretty amazing athlete and player that, regardless of circumstance, regardless of if he’s able to work out or takes a few days off, his consistency day-to-day is pretty extraordinary.”
