Jay Glazer says Panthers have interest in Sean Payton but ‘it ain’t happening’

Jay Glazer says the Panthers have interest in former Saints coach Sean Payton but ‘it ain’t happening’

We’ll file this one under “big but not surprising.” There isn’t anyone in the national media closer to Sean Payton than his longtime friend Jay Glazer — when Payton stepped down as New Orleans Saints head coach, he took a job with FOX Sports to join Glazer on their weekly NFL pregame show. Glazer has broken all sorts of stories over the years thanks to that tight connection with Payton, ranging from the infamous 2013 Jimmy Graham trade to Payton’s extension in 2019 that now impacts the future of multiple NFL teams.

With Payton expected to weigh offers from interested parties in 2023, it makes sense that teams are reaching out to gauge his interest through a backdoor in conversations with Glazer. He relayed a conversation he shared with Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer and other team brass concerning Payton’s interest in their open head coaching job during a Thursday night appearance on FOX Sports Radio.

“Sean Payton would be a good start but it ain’t happening,” Glazer recounted. “He ain’t going there. So Carolina Panther fan, Sean Payton is not going to be your next head coach.”

The Panthers are always going to be seen as a longshot in this situation, given their status as a division rival with New Orleans and the extra draft capital it would take to sway the Saints into cutting a deal with him. But Payton’s disinterest in the job makes sense, too. Carolina’s ownership is probably a little more hands-on in daily affairs than Payton would be comfortable with, and their roster is hardly ready to compete right away. Even if they get the first overall pick in the 2023 draft, there’s no guaranteeing Payton would like any of the rookie quarterback prospects coming down the pipeline enough to tie his career to them.

Glazer shared some other interesting nuggets about the ongoing fire sale in Carolina, noting that a new head coach isn’t going to want to be “married to somebody else’s talent” as former Matt Rhule draft picks. The Panthers have already traded wide receiver Robbie Anderson and running back Christian McCaffrey for a nice haul of future draft assets, which they’ll be able to use to restock their roster under new management.

Just because Payton doesn’t want to go to Carolina doesn’t mean they don’t have a role to play in all this. The Panthers can offer more for Payton’s services than anyone else in the running, and the Saints should be able to play them against other, more serious suitors to win a better return. Hopefully it works out.

Eagles were close to acquiring WR Calvin Ridley from the Falcons before his suspension

#NFLonFOX insider #JayGlazer is reporting that #Eagles were close to acquiring WR Calvin #Ridley from the #Falcons before his suspension

The Eagles were among the team interested in acquiring Calvin Ridley and Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting that Philadelphia was close to a deal.

Glazer was recently a guest on the Takeoff with John Clark podcast and the NFL insider revealed this information.

“It was actually funny because they were one of the teams, they were close to a deal with Atlanta for Calvin Ridley and Atlanta backed out at the last second,” Glazer said. “And Philly was like, ‘What’s going on?’ They couldn’t really tell them. So Philly wasn’t too happy and then after, looked at it like, ‘Alright, Atlanta, thanks.’ Atlanta did business the right way. They weren’t allowed to say anything, again, the legalities of it, couldn’t say a word. They just had to pull out.

Ridley would have given the Eagles a veteran wide receiver the organization so desperately, and it could have adjusted Philadelphia’s free agent and NFL draft plans.

Ridley played just five games for the Falcons in 2021 after a 2020 season that saw the former Alabama star log 90 catches for 1,374 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Report: Sean Payton considering retirement from coaching, not move to another team

FOX Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer, close friend to Sean Payton, said Monday the Saints coach is considering retirement rather than a move to a new team:

Here’s the best information we’ve got yet on what comes next for New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton. This comes from FOX Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer on 1053 The Fan in Dallas, a close friend of Payton’s who has been the first to break news on everything from the Jimmy Graham trade in 2014 to his contract extension in 2019. When Glazer reports Saints news, it’s coming directly from Payton.

And he says Payton is considering a retirement from coaching in the NFL — a trade to another team isn’t on the table. It appears to be New Orleans or nothing for Payton.

“Sean changes his mind like every two seconds, we talk about it a lot, it’s why I haven’t reported anything because he changes his mind like every two minutes,” Glazer said, adding: “But that’s also why I said two weeks ago on FOX NFL Sunday during the coaching carousel was that there could be a coach or two step away just because these last two years of COVID, it’s taken its toll on people.”

COVID-19 issues have impacted every team throughout the pandemic, but those problems combined with a host of other factors — injuries, suspensions, and a hurricane evacuation — to frustrate Payton and his Saints staff in particular. It’s something Glazer said weighed on him.

Glazer continued: “But look at this year. That team, man I don’t know how many guys they had on I.R. They played a game with like ten defensive starters out, and four offensive starters out, his quarterbacks out. But he just keeps going back and forth. He’s been in Cabo these last couple weeks, he just got back so he’s supposed to meet with Mrs. Benson here in the early part of the week.”

So that’s reassuring, to an extent. We won’t see Payton coaching the Dallas Cowboys or the Chicago Bears or the New York Giants, or any other team propped up by annoying fans. But we could very well see Payton make the jump to a broadcast studio, leaving New Orleans shorthanded.

But we don’t know yet exactly what’s going to happen. Glazer added that Payton’s upcoming conversation with team ownership is going to be important — it’s something Gayle Benson said she’s looking forward to herself. Hopefully we’ll get a resolution in the days ahead, but Payton waffling on the decision like this sure doesn’t make it seem like he’s too eager to hang up his hat.

Jay Glazer: Urban Meyer believes he has the ‘full support of ownership’

Per Glazer, Meyer denied having an altercation with Marvin Jones but did not deny the incident with his assistant coaches.

First-year Jaguars coach Urban Meyer has once again found himself at the center of the NFL news cycle. This time, it’s not the result of a viral bar video but rather a report from NFL Network’s Tom Peliserro that sheds light on Meyer’s increasingly strained relationship with both his staff and players.

Among the most damning aspects of that piece — the details of which have been confirmed by some on the local beat — Peliserro reports that Meyer had a verbal altercation with one of the team’s veteran leaders in receiver Marvin Jones Jr. He also reports that Meyer berated his assistant coaches during a staff meeting, calling himself a winner while they were losers and forcing each staff member to publicly defend their pedigrees. He also apparently ordered the benching of star running back James Robinson after his early fumble last week, contrary to Meyer’s public statements on the matter, where he placed the blame on running backs coach Bernie Parmelee.

It’s been a bad look for the 2-10 team to say the least, and it has renewed discussions about whether Meyer will be retained as head coach in 2022. However, per NFL insider Jay Glazer on FOX NFL Sunday, who spoke to Meyer, the national championship-winning coach believes he still has institutional support.

“It was reported this week that he got into it with Marvin Jones, that part he denies,” Glazer said.

However, Meyer apparently didn’t deny that the incident in the staff meeting occurred as described.

“He didn’t deny that part,” Glazer added, referring to the bizarre moment with his staff. “He said, ‘Yes, I’m hard on my coaches, I get on them,’ but he still thinks he has the full support of ownership.”

Whether Meyer actually has the full support of owner Shad Khan remains to be seen, but there’s reason to believe that Khan would not make a change before the end of the season, at the very least. He’s notoriously patient with head coaches, as Gus Bradley was allowed to coach four seasons despite never winning more than five games and Doug Marrone stayed on for three more losing seasons after the team’s AFC Championship run in 2017.

But this team is struggling on the field, and one has to think with Meyer’s continued antics, he’s running out of grace off the field.

Aaron Rodgers will likely avoid suspension, return to play Seahawks

Aaron Rodgers will likely avoid suspension, return to play Seahawks.

In the aftermath of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers testing positive for COVID-19 and being ruled out for Week 9, speculation arose as to whether he would receive a suspension from the NFL and potentially stay out for Green Bay’s Week 10 contest against the Seattle Seahawks. Rodgers claimed to be “immunized” from COVID-19 before the season but recently admitted in an interview with Pat McAfee that he is unvaccinated

However, NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that the league issues fines to players and teams for violating COVID-19 protocol but does not suspend them for it.

It appears that a massive fine would be the worst-case scenario for the Packers’ veteran quarterback, and he will be able to return from the COVID-19/Reserve list in time to play Seattle if he remains asymptomatic, as his 10-day isolation period will end the day before the game, on November 13.

The Seahawks are currently on their bye week sitting at 3-5 and seek to build on a 31-7 thrashing of the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday. There is a chance that Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson could return to the field for Week 10, but turning the season around will be an uphill battle for Seattle regardless of their franchise quarterback’s status.

The Eagles have two of the NFL’s most talented tight ends on the roster and one NFL insider believes that one of the dynamic duo could be on the move.

Moments before the Eagles kicked the ball off to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers, Fox Sports NFL insider, Jay Glazer reported that teams from around the league have inquired about trading for either Zach Ertz or Dallas Goedert.

Teams like Arizona, Buffalo, Indianapolis, and Seattle could have an interest in one or both of the talented pass catchers.

An NFL Insider provided the latest on what he is hearing about Deshaun Watson and a potential trade involving the former Clemson and current Houston Texans quarterback.

During the latest edition of “#AskGlazer”, FOX NFL Insider Jay Glazer was asked to give the latest on Watson and a potential trade to the Miami Dolphins — the team that has long been viewed as the frontrunner to possibly acquire Watson via trade.

“Everybody’s asking this,” Glazer said in a video he posted on Twitter, which you can watch below. “Nothing’s changed, only because Houston still hasn’t gotten what they want from their demands for Miami. The desire is still there from Miami. And yes, they did soften their demands. It’s still whether or not Miami can give them what they’re looking for here.”

Glazer also commented on a question that was posed to him by someone wondering if the Pittsburgh Steelers would make a move for Watson in an effort to turn their season around, with Ben Roethlisberger struggling at times this season.

“I actually talked to (Steelers head coach) Mike Tomlin about if something could happen this year,” Glazer said. “He said, nah, we’re not the type of team that’ll do something during the season, that’s just not us. So, I don’t see that happening with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Deshaun Watson or anything like that.”

As Glazer reiterated, the Texans have lowered their asking price for Watson. However, he notes that Houston won’t just move him without getting a sufficient return, if they do in fact make a deal with another team before the Nov. 2 trade deadline.

“I told you a couple weeks ago, Houston, they did soften their trade demands somewhat,” Glazer said. “They’re still not going to give him away just for nothing. So, they’re still kind of haggling back and forth. They’ve still got some more time before the trade deadline.”

Watson, of course, has been inactive for each of Houston’s games so far this season with his legal situation, with allegations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct, still unresolved.
