Notre Dame wide receiver transfers to Ivy League

Not a bad landing spot for the former Fighting Irish wide receiver.

Former Notre Dame wide receiver Jay Brunelle spent less than a month in the transfer portal before finding his new home in the Ivy League.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Brunelle is headed back near his home of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. He has decided to transfer to Yale, announcing the decision on Twitter this Tuesday.

Brunelle was set to enter his sophomore season at Notre Dame after not getting on the field at all in 2020. His career with the Fighting Irish got off to an unfortunate start when he had surgery on his shoulder shortly after enrolling.

Brunelle was graded a three-star recruit by both 247Sports and Rivals when he came out of St. John’s in Massachusetts.

Brunelle is the latest of a slew of Notre Dame players over the past year to use the transfer portal to continue their careers elsewhere.

An Irish receiver will take his talents elsewhere.

On paper, no true star receiver for Notre Dame in 2020 would indicate that the position is up for grabs. However, Irish receiver Jay Brunelle saw the writing on the wall for his opportunities in South Bend. After not seeing any game action as a freshman last season, Brunelle has decided he has a better chance of flourishing elsewhere. That being the case, he did the only thing he could do:

Brunelle, a native of Paxton, Massachusetts, came to the Irish as a three-star recruit out of St. John’s. As a senior, he had 52 receptions for 1,071 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. No player in the history of Central Massachusetts has had more receiver yards than him at 2,666.

As a recruit, Brunelle fielded offers from such programs as Michigan, Boston College, Wake Forest, Rutgers, UCLA, West Virginia and UMass. We obviously don’t know if he’ll consider any of those schools this time around, but his previous communication with them can’t hurt.

According to a report from Irish Sports Daily, Notre Dame freshman wide receiver Jay Brunelle will not be able to participate in upcoming spring practice.

Brunelle had enrolled at Notre Dame early but due to surgery on a separated shoulder he won’t be available for spring.

Brunelle, one of three wide receivers to sign with Notre Dame and Brian Kelly this signing period, was graded by Rivals as a three-star signing out of Saint Johns in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

Brunelle won the heart of some Notre Dame fans last summer as you may remember, he committed to the Fighting Irish just days after visiting the University of Michigan.

Brunelle is listed by all outlets as a three-star receiver and pulled down 121 receptions for 2229 yards and 29 touchdowns in his final two years of high school.

Notre Dame will need to replace a lot at wide receiver in 2020 as both Chase Claypool and Chris Finke who combined to haul in 94 passes for over 1300 yards and 16 touchdowns are gone.

Signing Jordan Johnson early Wednesday was a huge step in the right direction there, but he wasn’t the only receiver Notre Dame had their eye as Jay Brunelle from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts also signed his NLI.
