Former Oregon edge rusher Jaxson Jones transfers to Utah

Former Oregon Ducks edge rusher

Just six days after entering the transfer portal, Jaxson Jones, a former Oregon Duck has found his next school in the Utah Utes. The freshman edge rusher is one of four Ducks to enter the portal this December, and he’s the first to announce his commitment to his new team. Jones announced his commitment via Instagram.

As a 3-star recruit and the No. 7 ranked Arizona player in the class of 2024, Jones garnered interest from schools across the old Pac-12, including the Ducks and the Utes. Before committing to Oregon during his initial recruitment, Jones was committed to Washington for a few months.

Jones only saw the field once in his freshman season at Oregon, taking a defensive line snap against the Maryland Terrapins. Coming to Eugene with Jones was 5-star edge rusher and fellow Arizonan Elijah Rushing who took in-game reps much more often than Jones this season.

Rushing wasn’t the only one beating Jones out for playing time. In a program like Oregon’s, playing consistent snaps as a freshman is an exception rather than the rule. But, since most of the Ducks’ top edge rushers, such as Matayo Uiagalelei, Teitum Tuioti, and Blake Purchase, are expected to return next season, it’s likely Jones would’ve become reacquainted with the bench if he stuck around.

In 2023, the Utah Utes defense was led by elite pass rusher Jonah Eliss, but after Eliss left for the NFL, the Utes were left without an elite pass rusher. Jones is still early in his development, but — with four years of eligibility left — a spot on Utah’s defense gives him a fantastic opportunity to blossom — if that’s what he’s destined for.

SIGNED: Four-star EDGE Jaxson Jones is officially a Duck

The Oregon Ducks officially signed 4-star EDGE Jaxson Jones, adding him to the 2024 class.

Part of the transformation of the Oregon Ducks defense is finding pass rushers and more specifically, defensive ends, whose sole purpose is to get after the quarterback.

Oregon is trying to continue that tradition as the Ducks just signed four-star EDGE rusher Jaxson Jones out of Yuma, Ariz.

At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Jones will likely use the beginning of his career at Oregon to bulk up some. 247Sports rates Jones as the No. 30 EDGE rusher in the nation and the No. 7 player in the state of Arizona.

In 2022, Jaxson finished an 11-game junior season with 87 tackles, 17 sacks, three fumble recoveries, and two kick blocks. As a sophomore in 2021, he recorded 47 tackles, five sacks, and one forced fumble.

Jaxson had offers from Washington, Arizona State, California and Colorado State before deciding to become a Duck.

2024 EDGE Jaxson Jones commits to Oregon days after decommitting from Washington

Six days ago, Jaxson Jones decommitted from the Washington Huskies. On Sunday, he joined the Ducks.

Oregon Duck fans likely woke up with a reason to smile on Sunday morning. They once again had reason to feel some pride when it comes to the Oregon vs. Washington Huskies rivalry.

2024 3-star EDGE Jaxson Jones announced that he would be committing to the Ducks after his weekend visit to Eugene. This is notable because just six days ago, Jones announced his decommittment from the Huskies and scheduled a trip to Oregon.

It appears that visit went well, with Jones immediately committing to the Ducks thereafter.

According to 247Sports, Jones is rated as the No. 19 EDGE in the 2024 class, and the 247Sports Composite has him as the No. 611 overall player in the nation. He is now the fifth addition to Oregon’s 2024 class, which ranks No. 9 in the nation.
