Weekend Rewind: Ohio State crowd chants they want Bronny James during Notre Dame game

The Buckeyes faithful made it clear: They want Bronny James.

The most-hyped college football game of the past week took place in Columbus, where Ohio State hosted Notre Dame. Thanks to a dominant defensive effort, the Buckeyes beat the Fighting Irish, 21-10.

As expected, it was an electric atmosphere at Ohio Stadium and plenty of sports celebrities were in attendance. Some of the famous alums on the sidelines during pregame included Jayson Tatum, Ezekiel Elliott and a half-dozen other NFL players.

The biggest name belonged to Akron native LeBron James, who is entering his 20th year in the NBA and fifth with the Lakers. While LeBron went straight from high school to the NBA, he’s adopted Ohio State as his favorite college football team. And as James schmoozed with potential recruits for the Buckeyes, his son Bronny got recognized by the crowd – which started a “We want Bronny” chant.

A four-star recruit, Bronny (6-foot-3, 190 pounds) is one of the most highly-sought combo guards in the country entering his senior season at Sierra Canyon (Calif.). He is ranked No. 10 at his position and No. 41 overall in the class of 2023, according to 247Sports.

LeBron disputed a recent rumor that he’d decided on Oregon. Bronny has not made an official visit yet and no offers have been reported.

For Los Angeles, this contest marks its fourth and final game of the road trip. The Clippers, who sit in third place in the Western Conference standings with a record of 37-17, are averaging over 115 points per game in February. Kawhi Leonard is averaging 27.1 points per game, 7.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists this season, while Paul George is having an amazing season as well, averaging 22.6 PPG, 6.1 rebounds and four assists. Shooting guard Lou Williams and power forward Montrezl Harrell are also averaging nearly 20 points a game for this high octane offense. Williams had 27 points the first time these two teams met. The Clippers recently bolstered their lineup by adding Marcus Morris from the Knicks in a trade at the deadline. Morris was averaging 19.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

The Boston Celtics have been red-hot, winning seven of their last eight games. The Rockets broke the Celtics seven-game win streak on Tuesday, beating Boston 116-105. The Celtics kicked off the month of February with a 21-point victory over the 76ers and recently edged out Oklahoma City on the road 112-111. The team will be represented in Chicago at the All-Star game by Jayson Tatum and guard Kemba Walker, who are averaging over 22 points a game. Walker is a four-time All-Star and an integral part of this team, which sits third behind the Bucks and Raptors in the Eastern Conference. It’s been a rotating door of rest and injuries for Brad Stevens’ squad, but when in full force, it is one of the best in the league.

Jayson Tatum’s growth as a defender praised by Spurs’ Popovich

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has high praise for third-year forward Jayson Tatum’s growth as a defender.

When a coach like the San Antonio Spurs’ Gregg Popovich praises a prospect, it’s for good reason.

The famously taciturn coach had a chance to work with Boston Celtics swingman Jayson Tatum over the summer as the Duke product was one of four Celtics to play for Team USA in FIBA World Cup play in August and September, and came away impressed by the third-year player’s defense.

A coveted prospect coming out of the NCAA ranks  due to his well-rounded offensive game, Tatum has improved his abilities prodigiously on the other side of the ball over the last two seasons, and Popovich took note, working with the young forward to become a better defender.

“Let’s just say that Jayson’s probably surprised at the attention I gave him defensively,” Popovich said ahead of the team’s Jan. 8 loss to the Spurs (via NBC Sports Boston’s Justin Leger).

“But he responded magnificently and as I said, unfortunately got hurt just when I think he was understanding exactly how good a player he can be if he added that to his game. There aren’t that many two-way players in the league — genuine.”

“Some think they are, but you can count them on one hand. And he’s got the possibility to be one of those,” added Popovich.

While much of the attention on Tatum’s development has rightfully been focused on the steps forward he’s taken as a scorer, the former Blue Devil has been playing some of the best defense of his career to go with logging 20.8 points, 6.9 boards and 2.8 assists per game.

The Missouri native is in range of getting his first NBA All-star nod as a result, with Tatum’s leap on both ends of the court no small part of Boston’s unexpectedly strong season to date — recent slide aside.

Jayson Tatum, Pats’ Julian Edelman replacing Tom Brady as Best Buddies co-chairs

A changing of the guard is taking place with the Best Buddies Challenge as Celtics forward Jayson Tatum and Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman will replace legendary quarterback Tom Brady as co-chairs of the charity event.

The time has come for a changing of the guard in Boston.

For more than a decade-and-a-half, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has been an honorary co-chair of the Best Buddies Challenge: Hyannis Port, but will step down in that role this year.

Taking up the mantle will be Boston Celtics swingman Jayson Tatum and Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman, who will work alongside Brady’s current co-chairs celebrity chef Guy Fieri and U.S. congressman Joseph P. Kennedy III.

The event benefits the Best Buddies program, which describes itself as an

“organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for … friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD),”

and includes a flag football game and bike ride for charity to help fund the organization.

In a press release announcing the change, Brady stated, “It has been one of my greatest honors to serve as an honorary co-chair of the Best Buddies Challenge: Hyannis Port”.

“I love meeting the inspiring buddies at events, seeing their smiles, and hearing them talk about how Best Buddies has changed their lives for the better by helping them make friends at school and find meaningful jobs in their local communities,”

continued the six-time Superbowl champ.

“I look forward to continuing to support the organization as a Global Ambassador,” he added.

Tatum is no stranger to charity events himself, having donated time and money to numerous causes, even starting his own charity organization.

That charity, the Jayson Tatum foundation, describes its mission “to positively impact and inspire children, teens and their families,” in a manner similar to the goals of the Best Buddies Challenge: Hyannis Port.

Using “education, athletics and other … initiatives,” Tatum’s foundation hopes “to encourage them to strive to fulfill their dreams and aspirations” in a way that suggests the Missouri native will be a seamless fit as one half of the team stepping into the New England football legend’s very big shoes.

While there has been some chatter the move signals a looming retirement or decampment for the Patriots quarterback, it seems the opposite for the Celtics swingman, who will be eligible for a contract extension at the end of the 2019-20 season.

No word from the Duke product on the new role, but we’ll see him on the court soon enough.
