Former Vikings QB Jaren Hall signs with Seattle Seahawks

The former fifth-round pick will be heading West to Seattle.

After choosing to keep Nick Mullens on the roster and sign Brett Rypien, it all but effectively ended former fifth-round pick Jaren Hall’s tenure with the Vikings. Minnesota wanted to keep Hall and bring him back on the practice squad, but the Seattle Seahawks swooped the former BYU quarterback up and signed him to their practice squad.

Reporter Darren Wolfson confirmed the Vikings wanted to keep Hall. But Seattle might’ve been even higher on the second-year gunslinger. According to Wolfson, Seattle wanted Hall back in the 2023 NFL Draft and even attempted to acquire Hall from the Vikings this offseason.

After Kirk Cousins went down last year, Hall started a game for Minnesota. Hall started against the Atlanta Falcons and went 5-for-6 for 78 yards before he suffered an injury. Then fans will all remember what happened next: Joshua Dobbs’ mania.

The Vikings will enter Sunday with three quarterbacks and future starter J.J. McCarthy rehabbing for next season.

Seahawks sign former Vikings QB Jaren Hall to practice squad

Seahawks sign former Vikings QB Jaren Hall to practice squad

The Seattle Seahawks practice squad has gained another member, this time, a quarterback. On Monday morning, the Seahawks signed former Minnesota Vikings backup to their practice squad, giving the organization another quarterback behind Geno Smith and Sam Howell – who are on the active roster already.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

After four years at BYU, Hall was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft. Hall was solid for the Cougars. During his last two years in Provo, he threw for 5,754 yard, 51 touchdowns against only 11 interceptions.

With the Vikings, Hall did see some action. After starter Kirk Cousins was lost for the year with an Achilles injury, Hall was pressed into service. During his first start against the Falcons, Hall suffered a concussion and did not return after half. The Vikings did hold on for a 31-28 victory, so the win was credited to his record. However, in his second start he was benched at half during a 33-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Overall, Hall’s NFL stats aren’t much to look at. He’s completed 13-of-20 passes for 168 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

Vikings waive QB Jaren Hall, sign Brett Rypien

After finalizing their 53-man roster on Tuesday, the Vikings decided to waive quarterback Jaren Hall and signed Brett Rypien.

The Minnesota Vikings have made a change at the quarterback position. After finalizing their 53-man roster on Tuesday, they decided to waive quarterback Jaren Hall and signed Brett Rypien, who was waived this week.

Rypien was most recently with the Chicago Bears this offseason. He has also played for the Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, and Los Angeles Rams after being undrafted in 2019.

Entering the 2019 NFL Draft, Rypien was seen as a fun quarterback prospect out of Boise State with his live arm and excellent touch on his deep ball passes. His success for Boise State hasn’t translated to the NFL, thus his hopping around the league.

As for Jaren Hall, it is unclear whether the Vikings will attempt to sign him to the practice squad or not; they did just draft him last year. He will have to clear waivers; if he does, he can sign with the team on Friday.

Vikings edge rusher Dallas Turner makes NFL analyst’s All-Preseason team

Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Dallas Turner made NFL analyst Jacob Camenker’s All-Preseason team, with four others earning honorable mention

Preseason football is important for everyone on the roster, to varying degrees. For established veterans, it’s important to get back into the flow of things after an offseason of inactivity. For players fighting for a roster spot, it’s important to get the reps and show coaching staffs – both their own and the 31 other teams’ – that they belong in this league.

For rookies, like Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Dallas Turner, it’s their first chance to see professional action and to show why they were drafted.

While Turner didn’t see much action during this year’s preseason, he made an impression when he was out there. So much so that he’s been named to one NFL analyst’s All-Preseason team. Jacob Camenker of The Sporting News released his First-Team All-Preseason team Monday, and Turner is one of his two choices at EDGE.

Speed was the name of the game for Turner this preseason. He used his athletic ability to beat Saints offensive tackle Andrus Peat in the team’s first game and got a key sack in the red zone. That gave fans and the league just a glimpse of the talent that made the Vikings trade back up into the first round to grab Turner.

If Turner can continue to develop and maintain that speed, he should be a dangerous weapon in a Brian Flores-led defense. Turner only saw 31 snaps this preseason, but it was more than enough to show that his first-round selection was warranted.

Along with Turner, the Vikings earned four honorable mentions on Camenker’s All-Preseason team: Quarterback Jaren Hall, wide receiver Trishton Jackson, defensive tackle Taki Taimani, and kicker Will Reichard all received nods for their summer performances.

Could Jaren Hall be waived by the Vikings after a strong preseason finale?

Despite playing very well in the preseason finale, Hall could still be on the edge of the roster’s cliff.

The Minnesota Vikings have a fun and unique situation facing them for the 2024 NFL Season. Their franchise quarterback, future at the position, is out for the year and they are facing the realization that Sam Darnold is the man for the upcoming season.

Behind Darnold, things begin to get even murkier than the idea of playing the former USC Trojan alone.

Quarterbacks Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall have both played for the Vikings for the last two seasons. Both had mild success, but only one was drafted in the fifth round, where one was a UDFA and signed off waivers. Despite playing very well in the preseason finale, Hall could still be on the edge of the roster’s cliff.

Ben Goessling of The Star Tribune predicts that Hall could find himself on waivers but that doesn’t mean the team isn’t interested in keeping him. They could look to land him on practice squad which would allow the team to keep him while also giving the team the flexibility of another roster spot for someone else.

Having Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens on the 53-man roster is a safe bet. Either one seemingly give the team the same chance at winning but keeping Hall around also allows him to keep developing. When he was drafted in 2023 no one expected him to be an NFL quarterback on day one.

The development we saw this preseason is reassuring but he has a long way to go, keeping him around allows the Vikings to remain invested in him with the potential for a high return on investment.

Several Vikings among league leaders in various stats from 2024 preseason

With the 2024 NFL preseason over, the Minnesota Vikings had a number of players among the statistical leaders, including QB Jaren Hall.

Preseason football is less about raw stats and more about getting reps in in anticipation of the coming season and looking good while doing it. That said, it’s always nice when those two things coincide. That is the case for several Minnesota Vikings players this year, as the team has several preseason stats leaders.

The plan and hope is that Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold can start all 17 games and play well in doing so. However, Jaren Hall showed during the preseason that he has developed since his brief starting stint last season. In limited action, Hall was among the preseason leaders in passer rating, finishing third overall at 112.5, just behind Jaguars backup Mac Jones and Broncos starter Bo Nix, who led the league at 116.7.

Though he may not have won the battle for WR3 against Jalen Nailor, Vikings wide receiver Trishton Jackson showed he deserves a role in the offense this preseason. A favorite target of anyone taking the snap, Jackson tied for third in receiving yards. But Jackson wasn’t just wracking up yards, he was also putting the ball in the end zone. Jackson led all receivers and tight ends this preseason with three scores.

The final statistical leader for the Vikings was new kicker Will Reichard. The sixth-round pick from Alabama finished his college career as the NCAA’s FBS all-time leading scorer. He picked up right where he left off, coming in second this preseason with 29 points, just two behind leader Cairo Santos. Reichard also booted a 57-yard field goal this preseason to show off his range.

Fighting for roster spot, Vikings QB Jaren Hall looked impressive

On Saturday against the Eagles, Jaren Hall did his best to lock down his spot on the roster as cuts loom.

The quarterback competition for the Minnesota Vikings has been interesting ever since J.J. McCarthy went down with a knee injury. The team has been working with a trio of Sam Darnold, Nick Mullens, and Jaren Hall with the latter two being left competing for a roster spot.

On Saturday against the Eagles, Jaren Hall did his best to lock down his spot on the roster as cuts loom.

The second-year quarterback started the Vikings’ preseason finale against Vic Fangio and the Eagles’ defense. The Eagles were trotting out their star rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean, who was making his NFL debut, so he was in for a tough defense.

Despite that, Hall played the best football of his NFL career.

He finished the first half 15-for-21 passing the ball and throwing for 162 yards and two touchdowns. He demonstrated excellent zip and overall arm strength while also showcasing his ability to put the right amount of touch on his passes to drop them into the receiver’s hands.

He deservingly deserves a roster spot and could lock up the backup job behind Darnold.

QB Jaren Hall set to start Vikings preseason finale against Eagles

The Vikings will rest a ton of their starters against the Eagles and will start Jaren Hall at quarterback.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed to reporters that most of the starters wouldn’t be playing on Saturday against the Eagles in the last preseason game. The move doesn’t come as a surprise, as the Vikings already suffer plenty of injuries.

With Sam Darnold not suiting up, O’Connell said Jaren Hall will get the start for Minnesota at quarterback. O’Connell also plans on getting freshly signed quarterback Matt Corrall some playing time.

With Darnold and Mullens squarely on the roster, Minnesota is likely trying to figure out its quarterback No. 3 role. Hall started a game for the Vikings last season, and so far this preseason, Hall has completed 11-of-21 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns.

Corrall, a former third-round Panthers pick, was signed by Minnesota after it placed J.J. McCarthy on the IR. Corrall played some against the Browns, but didn’t attempt a pass. Corrall has yet to try a pass in the NFL.

Vikings fans will see who will likely secure that third spot on the quarterback depth chart when Minnesota faces Philadelphia.

Sam Darnold labeled Minnesota Vikings’ “X-factor” heading into 2024

The Minnesota Vikings’ season is going to hinge on the performance of quarterback Sam Darnold, making him the team’s “X-factor” in 2024.

The Minnesota Vikings are in a bit of a pickle regarding their quarterback situation heading into the 2024 season. The plan all along was for former first-round pick Sam Darnold to start the season and for the team to evaluate when to bring in this year’s first-round pick, J.J. McCarthy.

That plan changed dramatically when McCarthy was lost for the season with a knee injury. Now, the Vikings are left with Darnold as the starter and a lot of uncertainty behind him if things don’t pan out for the much-maligned quarterback.

That uncertainty is what has Bleacher Report NFL analyst Kristopher Knox naming Darnold the Minnesota Vikings’ “X-factor” for the 2024 season. Darnold can have one of two seasons: either a redemptive season reminiscent of Baker Mayfield and Geno Smith or a complete collapse, and the Vikings will have to turn elsewhere.

If that second scenario plays out, they’d be turning to either Nick Mullens, who was prolific in his starts last season in relief of injured quarterback Kirk Cousins but was 0-3 in his starts, or Jaren Hall—who was unimpressive in his two starts but went 1-1—or recently signed Matt Corral, who has yet to play a game in the NFL.

The Vikings are in a position where they desperately need Darnold to play like a quarterback who was taken with a top-three pick and not like the quarterback he has played for much of his career.

Fantasy football: Minnesota Vikings QB preview

Will Sam Darnold resurrect his career in Minnesota?

One of the training camps that garnered a lot of interest earlier this month was the Minnesota Vikings. After years with Kirk Cousins at the wheel, Minnesota was breaking new ground. The Vikings held off trading up when quarterbacks were flying off the board until they gave away far less than projected to land J.J. McCarthy with the 10th pick in the draft.

They had their player. The Vikings came up with a Plan B scenario, signing veteran Sam Darnold on a team-friendly, one-year deal similar to the contract Baker Mayfield signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year. The primary difference was that the Vikings had a dissimilar plan in place. As soon as McCarthy was ready, Darnold was heading to the bench – a “rent don’t own” situation in Minnesota.

That ended in the first preseason game. McCarthy suffered a torn meniscus, and his rookie season is over. Plan B is now Plan A in Minnesota.
