WBC final: Japan at USA odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Japan at USA WBC Classic final odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The World Baseball Classic final pits USA (5-1) and Japan (6-0) on Tuesday night at loanDepot park in Miami. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. (FS1). Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Team USA vs. Japan odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Team USA has yet to face Japan in the WBC. Japan won the 1st 2 WBCs in 2006 and 2009. Team USA is the defending champ, winning its 1st title in 2017. These teams meet in the title game for the 1st time in WBC history.

Team USA advanced to the final with a resounding 14-2 victory over Cuba in the semifinals. Philadelphia SS Trea Turner was one of many offensive stars in that game, swatting a pair of home runs, coming on the heels of a go-ahead grand slam in the quarterfinals against Venezuela.

St. Louis 1B Paul Goldschmidt also connected for a 2-run homer against Cuba, while Cardinals 3B Nolan Arenado collected a pair of hits, including a triple, a HBP, RBI and a pair of runs scored.

A pair of St. Louis Cardinals also pitched USA into championship position, as both Adam Wainwright and Miles Mikolas allowed just a single run over 4 IP, with Los Angeles Angels LHP Aaron Loup provided a scoreless IP of work.

Japan was down 3-0 to Mexico in Monday’s semifinal heading to the bottom of the 7th inning. Masataka Yoshida belted a 3-run homer just inside the right-field foul pole, trying things up. Mexico’s Randy Arozarena and Alex Verdugo had back-to-back doubles against Japan’s Yoshinobu Yamamoto for a 4-3 lead in the Top of the 8th. Mexico then tacked on a run to make it 5-3.

In the bottom of the 8th, pinch hitter Hotaka Yamakawa delivered a sacrifice fly to slice the lead to 5-4. In the bottom of the 9th, Lo Angeles Angels’ superstar Shoehi Ohtani posted a leadoff double, Yoshida walked and them Munetaka Murakami smacked a 2-run walk-off double off the wall in right-center field to score Ohtani and pinch runner Ukyo Shuto, as Mexico’s Giovanny Gallegos blew the save and took the loss.

Japan leads the WBC with a .314 batting average through 6 games, posting 7 HRs with a tournament-high 52 RBI and .986 OPS. Team USA has a WBC-high 10 homers in 6 games, posting 47 RBI and a .969 OPS while leading the tournament in SLG at .567.

Japan at USA picks and predictions

Prediction

USA 7, Japan 5

Moneyline

USA (-125) rolls into this title game brimming with confidence. It also had an extra day of rest, as it vanquished Cuba in the semifinals on Sunday.

Japan (+110) had an emotional comeback Monday, and now faces the quick turnaround having to play on American soil less than 24 hours after a hard battle against Mexico.

The American bats have been on fire since switching venues from pool play in Phoenix to the knockout stages in Miami. USA clobbered Cuba 14-2 in the semis, and it piled up 9 runs and 15 hits in a high-scoring 2-run win over Venezuela in the quarters.

Run line/Against the spread

USA -1.5 (+115) is worth playing lightly at plus-money. The Americans have managed 23 runs in the last 2 games. The concern with backing the home nation is pitching, as USA has a 4.33 ERA, as opposed to Japan’s WBC-best 2.33 ERA.

Over/Under

The OVER 10.5 (-102) is worth a look, as the USA has easily cashed the Over in both games at loanDepot park in Miami. The Over also cashed in the semis for Japan Monday against Mexico, with 8 of the game’s 11 total runs coming from the bottom of the 7th on. Japan also took care of the Over against Italy in the 2nd round on Thursday.

These are the 2 highest-scoring teams in the WBC, with Japan scoring 53 runs in 6 games, and USA going for 49 runs in 6 games. Look for plenty of fireworks.

2022 World Cup: Japan vs. Spain odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Japan vs. Spain odds and lines, with World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

In a Group E stage match, Japan (1 win, 1 loss, 0 draws) and Spain (1-0-1) meet Thursday at Khalifa International Stadium at 2 p.m. ET (FOX/Universo). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Japan vs. Spain odds, and make our best World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Japan heads into this one looking to rebound after a stunning 1-0 setback against Costa Rica Sunday. That loss splashed cold water on its 2-1 shocking upset of Germany in the opening match. F Ritsu Doan and F Takuma Asano scored in the opener and will need to step up their offense against La Roja.

Spain pounded Costa Rica 7-0 in the opener before settling for a 1-1 draw against Germany Sunday. The Spaniards are in good shape to advance to the Round of 16 thanks to an impressive +7 goal differential. Still, with a loss to Japan, and a Costa Rica win over Germany, it is still mathematically possible for Spain to be eliminated.

Prediction

Spain 2, Japan 1

Moneyline (ML)

A play on Spain (-260) will cost you more than 2 1/2 times your potential return, and that’s too much, even if the heavy favorites are likely to have their foot on the gas the whole way with elimination possible.

While that’s all well and good, JAPAN +2 (-140) is still playing to advance, too, and it is in really good shape to do so if it can get a result. Japan has plenty of world-class players to give Spain all it can handle.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 2.5 (-115) is the lean, as both sides will be going all out, with a lot of end-to-end action. That will be especially true in the second half, as these teams keep an eye on each other, and an eye on the scoreboard from the Costa Rica-Germany match.

Spain rolled up 7 goals against Costa Rica, the highest total in any match during the tournament. It won’t do that against Japan, but La Roja should be good for at least 2 in the back of the net. As long as Japan can show the talent which was on the display against Germany, it should avoid getting blanked.

2022 World Cup: Japan vs. Costa Rica odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Japan vs. Costa Rica odds and lines, with World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

In a Group E match, Japan (1 win, 0 losses, 0 draws) and Costa Rica (0 wins, 1 loss, 0 draws) meet Sunday at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Ar Rayyan at 5 a.m. ET (FOX Sports 1/Telemundo). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Japan vs. Costa Rica odds, and make our best World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Japan opened its World Cup with an impressive 2-1 win over Germany at Khalifa International Stadium on Wednesday. It was a rather shocking result, as Germany had 9 shots on goal to just 4 for Japan, while the Germans maintained 72.0% of the possession.

Germany went up 1-0 on a penalty kick, but the second half was all Japan, as Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano found the back of the net to help it spring the upset.

Costa Rica was pounded 7-0 against Spain in the group opener Wednesday, as CRC went down 3-0 in the first half before allowing 4 more goals in the second half.

Costa Rica was thoroughly outplayed, as Spain outshot it 17-0, including 8 shots on goal, and Spain possessed the ball 81% to just 19%.

Prediction

Japan 3, Costa Rica 1

Moneyline (ML)

It sure is tempting to play Costa Rica (+700) as the heavy underdog for the chance to multiply your initial wager by more than 7 times. However, it’s not happening.

Japan (-240) is also not worth playing, risking more than 2 times your potential return. While Japan won’t play keep away from Costa Rica like Spain did, it has several world-class players to make it another long day for the Central Americans.

The better play is JAPAN -1 (+122) at plus-money, and JAPAN -2 (+320) is worth a small-unit play just in case things get away from Costa Rica like they did in the opener.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 2.5 (-105) is an attractive play. Costa Rica conceded a World Cup high of 7 goals in the opener against Spain, while Japan also went slightly Over the number in its stunning win over Germany.

We might not get to 4 or 5 total goals, but it’s easy to see Costa Rica breaking through for its first goal of the tourney, while Japan also hits the back of the net at least twice, perhaps thrice.

2022 World Cup: Germany vs. Japan odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Germany vs. Japan odds and lines, with World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

In a Group E opener for both sides, Germany and Japan meet Wednesday at Khalifa International Stadium in Ar Rayyan at 8 a.m. ET (FS1/Telemundo). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Germany vs. Japan odds, and make our best World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Germany had a terrible time in Russia during the last World Cup, failing to make it out of Group F with Mexico and Sweden advancing. Germany was blanked twice, including a stunning 2-0 beating from South Korea.

Germany limps into this competition missing key personnel. M Florian Wirtz and F Timo Werner didn’t make the squad due to injury, and F Marco Reus is not available to manager Hansi Flick, either. The Germans turn to 18-year-old F Youssoufa Moukoko, and 2014 standout, M Mario Gotze to plug the dike.

Japan has some world-class talent in D Yuto Nagatomo and D Maya Yoshida, and M Daichi Kamada is a player Germany knows well, as he has starred in the Bundesliga. D Takehiro Tomiyasu is also a world-class player who plays in the Premier League, so Japan has plenty of talent.

Prediction

Germany 2, Japan 1

Moneyline (ML)

Germany (-210) will cost you over 2 times your potential return, and that’s a little expensive for a side that is not bringing its top squad to Qatar due to injury. That’s not to say Germany doesn’t have plenty of talent, and experience, because it does. But they’re trying to replace several stars heading into the biggest competition of them all, and this is a side that failed miserably in Russia in 2018.

PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 2.5 (-140) is the best bet on the board. Germany is going to be looking to start hot, while Japan is going to be looking to add to the woes of Germany on the recent world stage.

The last time we saw Japan it was topped by Canada in a friendly Thursday. Germany topped Oman 1-0 in a friendly last Wednesday, but it has had just two clean sheets in the past 10 matches across all international competitions. We should see both sides on the scoreboard Wednesday.
