Warriors recall James Wiseman from G League Santa Cruz

After seven games in the G League, the former No. 2 overall pick has been recalled by the Warriors.

Before heading to Utah for a matchup with the Jazz, the Golden State Warriors will be getting some reinforcements from the G League.

After seven games with G League Santa Cruz, former No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman has been recalled to the NBA by the Warriors on Tuesday. Wiseman will join the team before their quick road trip to Utah.

During his stint with Santa Cruz, Wiseman averaged 15.6 points on 62.2% shooting from the field with 10.1 rebounds in 26.9 minutes per game.

Prior to joining the Warriors, Wiseman is coming off two games in Santa Cruz with back-to-back double-double performances in the boxscore.

The Warriors are slated to meet the Jazz in Utah on Wednesday at 6 p.m. PT.

Bleacher Report: Three new trade ideas for the OKC Thunder

The Thunder are involved in three new trade ideas. What are your thoughts on the three proposals?

The 2022-23 NBA season is a little over a month old right now, which means trade season is just a few weeks away as players who signed deals over this last offseason will be eligible to be moved on Dec. 15.

The NBA trade deadline is on Feb. 9. Which opens up a two-month window for trades to occur this season.

Bleacher Report writer Greg Swartz decided to use the impending deadline to create one new trade idea for all 30 NBA teams.

For the Oklahoma City Thunder, they are involved in three of Swartz’s trade ideas. Let’s take a look at the deals involving the Thunder and another team.

Warriors’ James Wiseman records second double-double in G League appearance

In his second appearance in the G League, James Wiseman recorded another double-double performance.

While the shorthanded Golden State Warriors were getting blown out by the New Orleans Pelicans on the road, James Wiseman was on the court getting work in the G League on Monday.

Can the Warriors be fixed with a trade? Probably not

The Warriors as we know them appear to be entering the twilight of their dominance. They are off to a shocking 7-9 start to the season where they rank 12th on offense and a bottom-tier 24th in defense. Their defensive struggles aren’t exclusive to their bench as the team has already given up 125 points in six different games.

While they surely miss players from last season like Gary Payton II (who hasn’t played a game this season yet due to injury), they may also really miss former assistant coach Mike Brown, who was considered their defensive coordinator. Since he joined the Warriors in 2016, the Warriors often finished at the top of the league in defensive rating and with the exception of the 2019-20 season, they never finished below 11th.

The two timelines also appear to be clashing, which was a potential concern prior to the season. The Warriors went into 2022-23 with the expectation that their recent first-round picks would be able to replace the veterans who left in the offseason. Jordan Poole, Jonathan Kuminga, and Moses Moody have been inconsistent while James Wiseman has struggled to stay in the rotation and has now been sent to the G-League.

Can the Warriors make any moves that could fix this roster? They could make some trades to save the season, but it’ll be difficult for them to find any deal that could solve most of their problems.

Warriors sending James Wiseman to G League Santa Cruz

The former No. 2 pick is on his way to Santa Cruz for a stint in the G League.

After their win over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday, the Golden State Warriors hit the road for a prime-time matchup against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday. However, one member of the team will be on his way to Santa Cruz instead.

Following Monday’s victory over the Spurs, Steve Kerr announced former No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman is being sent to Golden State’s G League affiliate in Santa Cruz. According to Kerr, the Warriors plan to keep Wiseman with the G League for an “extended period.”

Via @anthonyVslater on Twitter:

He’s going to go to Santa Cruz tomorrow. We will keep him there for an extended period to get really good practice time and some games. It’s not going to be one game and bring him back. We want to give him maybe 10 straight days, something like that. Come back. We all know things happen in this league. He’s going to find his way back to the rotation at some point, but the best thing for him is to play a lot of minutes and get a lot of reps.

The Santa Cruz Warriors will host the South Bay Lakers on Saturday before traveling to Utah for a back-to-back on Monday and Tuesday of next week against the Salt Lake City Stars.

After playing in 10 consecutive contests to start the season, including double-figure minutes in seven games, Wiseman didn’t record a minute off the bench in three straight games.

On Monday, Wiseman played nine minutes off the bench in Golden State’s 37-point blowout over San Antonio, recording two points, two assists and two rebounds.

In 11 games, Wiseman is averaging 6.8 points on 58.8% shooting from the field with 3.8 rebounds in 13.4 minutes per game.

Jordan Poole shared the most inspirational message for James Wiseman before his G League assignment

No one knows more about the value of the G League than Jordan Poole.

The Golden State Warriors will send James Wiseman, the former No. 2 overall pick to the G League, and it’s the right call for both sides.

Even though the Warriors just won a championship last season, as my colleague Mike Sykes recently wrote, the “two timelines” conundrum of developing their young talent while also contending for a title was always complicated. No one experienced those complications more than Wiseman.

Golden State was outscored by 24.4 points per 100 possessions when Wiseman was on the floor, which was the worst mark of anyone who is averaging more than 12.0 minutes per game. It was time for a change, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

No one knows that more than Golden State’s Jordan Poole, whose stint with the Santa Cruz Warriors was essential for his ascension in the NBA.

Poole was seen giving Wiseman what was described as “a helluva pep talk” after the game. He spoke to the big man for approximately five minutes, and he told reporters what he said.

According to Poole, playing in the G League is not a demotion and it’s not a punishment.

Wiseman can shoot as many shots as he wants, get as many touches as he wants, and work on whatever moves he may want to try. He can hang on the rim, get technicals, and play freely.

Poole added that he is confident in Wiseman because the big man is talented, curious, hungry, gifted, and humble.

When including passes, Poole averaged 4.4 possessions per game as the ball-handler in pick-and-roll sets during his rookie campaign in 2019-20. But that rate increased to 7.8 possessions per game when he played for Santa Cruz in 2020-21.

Those experiences were valuable and last season, and when he returned to the NBA last season, Poole averaged 7.4 possessions per game handling ball screens. This season, that rate has spiked (7.6) once more.

Wiseman is talented, and before the season began, we predicted he would be one of the league’s 23 best players under 23 years old. He still has plenty of time to develop; Wiseman is younger than Sacramento Kings rookie Keegan Murray.

The big man, who played three games in college and has played just one in the G League, is expected to spend extended time with Santa Cruz. It will be far more beneficial for him than collecting “DNP – Coach’s Decision” on box scores.

Just ask Poole, who parlayed his experience in the G League into a four-year, $140 million contract and an NBA championship with the Warriors.
