Alabama Recruiting: Tide offer versatile, 2024 WR James Madison II

Alabama’s coaching staff extended an offer to a trio of prospects from St. Thomas Aquinas recently. One of those was 2024 wide receiver James Madison II.

Recently, the Alabama coaching staff offered 2024 wide receiver James Madison II. He was one of three prospects from St. Thomas Aquinas High School to receive an offer from the Tide.

Madison II has a great frame at 6-foot-3, 170 pounds. After watching his highlight reel, it is clear that he plays well within his skill set. He possesses raw athleticism and versatility. He could play flex tight end or wide receiver at the next level.

At this time, he is favored to land at Georgia at 48.6% likelihood, according to On3’s RPM. The Bulldogs currently have his former high school teammate, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint on the roster. Despite any predictions, I expect Alabama to pursue Madison II until National Signing Day.

LSU makes top 10 for 2024 four-star wide receiver

The Tigers made the cut for Florida receiver James Madison II.

[autotag]James Madison II[/autotag] is a 2024 four-star wide receiver from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who recently included LSU in his top 10. He plays for St. Thomas Aquinas, a nationally-ranked high school football program that finished as the No. 6 team in the country at the end of the season.

The Raiders went 14-0 this season and won the 2022 3M state championship over Homestead 38-21. Madison is a star wide receiver for the Raiders and is ranked as high as the No. 12 wide receiver in Florida for the class of 2024.

LSU currently has eight commitments for the 2024 class including one wide receiver, [autotag]Joseph Stone[/autotag] from Buford, Georgia. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has signed back-to-back top-ten recruiting classes and he is well on his way to signing another as this class is currently ranked as the No. 2 class in the country.

There’s no telling how the wide receiver room will look after next season with the transfer portal being as crazy as it is, Madison would be a great addition to it.

The Insider Report: Upcoming visitors, what’s next for Clemson’s 2023 class and more

It’s time for this week’s edition of The Insider Report.

We hope everyone had a great weekend.

Notes on Clemson commits

If you’ve been following our recruiting coverage as of late, you’d know that we’ve spoken to a couple of high school head coaches, who coach Clemson’s class of 2023 commits.

We spoke to both Matthew Forester, who coaches five-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina at Birmingham (Alabama) Briarwood Christian School and Ben Reaves, who coaches four-star safety Robert Billings at Alpharetta (Georgia) Milton High School.

With Forester, we asked Briarwood’s head coach about the usage of the run-pass option in the Lions’ offense and how it could benefit Vizzina before he heads off to Clemson.

“That’s something I think for me personally, I got comfortable with this year,” Forester said. “And so, we’re doing a pretty good bit of that throughout the summer and fall camp. It’s something that as the season goes, we’ll bring more and more into that. A couple of big catches from (Week 1) were just RPOs and him reading an out.”

The run-pass option has been a fixture in Clemson’s offense for quite some time now, so getting comfortable with those types of offensive concepts would certainly benefit Vizzina before he graduates into a college offense in January.

“I think it’ll be a neat thing,” Forester continued. “I think (Brandon) Streeter will use that. I think it’ll be an enjoyable part of his growth. I think it’ll be something when he goes to Clemson, there won’t be a concept that he doesn’t feel comfortable translating high school into Clemson.”

Talking with Reaves, the line of questioning was similar in the sense that it revolved around Billings at the next level, but he gave a better feel for what his expectations are and what position we could see the big-time safety play at the next.

“What he’s got going for him is that he’s got such a big frame,” Reaves said. “He’s so long and so fast, that they can literally mold him into whatever they want him to be. Anywhere from a safety to potentially an outside backer, just because he’s got the body that can do it. The body that can handle it. And the skills to go along with it.

“I think ultimately, he’s gonna be best fit being a strong safety because that’s just gonna put him closer to contact and that’s what he’s good at — finding the ball, getting to the ball and knocking the crap out of somebody, play after play. I think ultimately that’ll be a role that’ll fit him and he’ll enjoy.”

Commit on what’s next for Clemson’s 2023 class

Speaking of Clemson’s class of 2023 commits, we recently spoke with Alpharetta (Georgia) St Francis High’s Branden Strozier. While the four-star cornerback has enjoyed a strong start to his senior season, we asked him about the uncommitted prospects that he and the rest of the commits are focused on recruiting at the moment.

While we’ve already shed light on those two prospects, Strozier offered his thoughts on recruiting both Phenix City (Alabama) Central high four-star defensive end Tomarrion Parker and Suwanee (Georgia) North Gwinnett high four-star defensive lineman Kayden McDonald.

Parker, who picked up an offer from Clemson on Aug. 11, has already set two gameday visits. As we previously reported, Parker will be on campus for Clemson’s home opener against Furman on Sept. 10 for an unofficial visit. He’ll return to Tiger Town the weekend of Oct. 22 for Clemson’s game against Syracuse.

As for McDonald, who reported a Clemson offer back in May, he announced a commitment date of Oct. 31. Right now, McDonald is set to take his official visit the weekend of Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, for the South Carolina game. Likely, McDonald will also make his way back up to Clemson for a game day visit before he ultimately makes his decision.

“That’s the ones that we are really trying to get,” Strozier said. “Because before them, we were focused on getting Ronan (Hanafin). Once we got Ronan, they are the priorities now. That’s what we are looking to get.”

Prospects lining up game-day visits

We wanted to shed some light on some upcoming game day visits. We fully expect Willis (Texas) five-star quarterback DJ Lagway and Jefferson (Georgia) five-star linebacker Sammy Brown to make gameday visits this fall. Neither one has officially set a date, but the expectation is that it will be settled after Sept. 1, when Clemson’s coaching staff can directly contact both junior prospects.

One prospect that has already set a game day visit, as we previously reported, is Fort Lauderdale (Florida) St. Thomas Aquinas four-star wide receiver James Madison II, who will be at Memorial Stadium for the Clemson-N.C. State game on Saturday, Oct. 1.

“I’m really excited,” Madison said. “I know they go all in for game days. I’m really excited to be up there.”

Another prospect that plans on making a game-day visit to Memorial Stadium this fall is Buford (Georgia) four-star linebacker Jadon Perlotte. The sophomore in the class of 2025 was looking at visiting Clemson this summer, but that didn’t end up materializing.

While he wasn’t able to say which game he was attending, Perlotte said that it’ll be one of Clemson’s first games. It’ll be his first time in Tiger Town since March 12.

Perlotte (6-4, 210) currently ranks as the nation’s No. 5 linebacker and the No. 33 overall prospect in the class of 2025, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Priority receiver target sets Clemson game day visit, talks relationship with Grisham

James Madison II  has kept in good contact with Tyler Grisham ever since he visited Clemson at the end of June.

Speaking with Clemson Insider in a phone interview Sunday afternoon, The four-star wide receiver prospect out of St. Thomas Aquinas estimates that he’s been on the phone with Clemson’s wide receivers coach about six or seven times since then.

“Sometimes it’ll be more about football, but we also talk about life and what Coach Swinney’s relaying to the team,” Madison said regarding his conversations with Grisham. “He’ll relay it to me, in order to get off the message and see what Clemson football, what they really talk about every day and what the coaches relay to most of the players. And then we’ll talk about how my season’s going and about how they’re implementing certain different things into the playbook and things like that.”

“Coach Grish, to me, he’s just a real good, stand-up guy,” Madison added. “I feel like he wants to see his players get in the best position that they can be. Bottom-line, he’s just a real stand-up guy. I don’t feel like he has an ulterior motive, he just really wants to see people be the best that they can.”

According to Madison, Grisham has broached the subject of a potential scholarship offer. So, far Clemson has doled out offers to just two wideouts in Madison’s class — Greensboro (N.C.) Grimsley High four-star Alex Taylor and Burlington (N.C.) Hugh M. Cummings four-star Jonathan Paylor.

“Coach Grish communicated that I’m one of their top guys in ‘24,” Madison said. “ There’s a few guys that they’re looking at and I’m one of those people. They said don’t really worry about that, but we’ve definitely had talks about (a potential offer.)”

Clemson hands out the fourth-fewest offers in the country, so what would it mean for Madison to earn a scholarship from a program like that, which is so selective with its offers?

“It would definitely mean a lot,” he said. “I can definitely see myself getting an offer from there, but also being able to do great things there. That means that offer would mean a lot because I really love the organization and what they’re doing up there. It’s a great program that’s out there, so I feel like (an offer) would be nice and I could definitely see myself going out there.”

Madison has no qualms with how Clemson goes about its business on the recruiting trail. He has no problem waiting for an offer to come his way In fact, he’s appreciative that the staff wants to get to know him better as a person as a football player.

What he does know, is that he’s a priority for Clemson, as far as rising juniors go.

“I definitely felt that from Coach Grisham, by the way, he talks about how he and Coach Swinney see me in their system,” Madison said. “Everything that he said, in general, makes me feel like that and that’s why I really appreciate the whole Clemson family, the whole Clemson organization, for making me feel like I’m a priority to them.”

Speaking of getting out to Clemson, Madison informed us that he has already set up a game day visit for this upcoming season. He’ll be at Memorial Stadium for the Clemson-N.C. State game on Saturday, Oct. 1.

“I’m really excited,” Madison said. “I know they go all in for game days. I’m really excited to be up there.”

In addition to Clemson, Madison said that he’ll probably go to Oregon and possibly Tennessee for game day visits in the fall. At the same time, he’ll have to see how that works with his schedule and understandably so.

Madison is ranked as high as the nation’s No. 10 wide receiver and No. 74 overall prospect in the 2024 class, per 247Sports.

Top Sunshine State WR recaps ‘great’ visit to Clemson

This past weekend, Clemson played host to a top receiver prospect in the class of 2024.

St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) four-star James Madison II traveled with his mother this past weekend and was able to check out Clemson and everything the program had to offer for himself.

“It was a great visit,” Madison told The Clemson Insider. “I got to meet Coach (Tyler) Grisham, the offensive coordinator (Brandon Streeter) and Coach Swinney. I got to meet a lot of people and get a good vibe of the school.”

What did Madison hear from Clemson’s coaches while he was on campus?

“They wanted to, obviously, sell me on the school, show me everything, how they develop and how they build better men,” he said. “They showed me what they want me to do in their offense. They showed me how I would be incorporated in their offense and we actually sat down and watched my film and broke it down and how it would transition to playing for them.”

According to Madison, he’s an X-receiver and while he didn’t want to compare himself to Tee Higgins or Justyn Ross, how they used those guys is how Clemson would want to incorporate him into its offense.

Madison is a self-described big target, who can run really well for his size and get open consistently. He’s the type of receiver who can not only take the top off the ball, but he can go up and get it as well. Madison also can be a bully when the ball is in the air.

Clemson waited a little bit to get in contact with Madison, so he started talking to Clemson’s wide receivers coach about three weeks ago. As their relationship has progressed over the past month, Grisham was adamant about getting Madison on campus prior to the dead period.

“I loved the coaching staff,” Madison said. “They’re very genuine people. You don’t really get a genuine vibe from big programs like that that’ve done so much, but everyone was really genuine people. I really felt like they wanted to see everyone in the organization win and they don’t have any false motives or anything like that.”

Clemson did speak with Madison, who already lists a handful of Power Five offers, about a potential offer down the road.

“Coach Grisham, obviously, they take their time with the offers, but he really likes me a lot,” Madison added. “Coach Swinney really likes me a lot, so they said very soon that’ll be coming. But I’m still gonna be talking to them a lot.”

With that being said, what would an offer from Clemson mean for Madison and his current recruitment?

“That would mean a lot,” he said. “What they showed me when I was there was really everything that I look for in a college that I’d like to attend. It would really be very high in my recruitment.”

As far as his recruitment is concerned, Madison is keeping his options wide open. In addition to Clemson, he visited Oregon, Mizzou, Florida State and Tennneseee this summer. Right now, he’s planning on getting back to Eugene on July 31.

Getting back to Clemson is seemingly a priority for Madison, who will make a gameday visit to Memorial Stadium this fall, but will just need to work on finding a date that works for his schedule.

Madison is ranked as high as the nation’s No. 10 wide receiver and No. 74 overall prospect in the 2024 class, per 247Sports.
