Key things to know about Chargers’ Week 7 opponent: Cardinals

Here are some important things to know about the Cardinals ahead of the Week 7 matchup with the Chargers.

The Chargers are on the road to face the Cardinals in primetime on Monday, Oct. 21, at 6:00 p.m. PT.

To get you prepped for the Week 7 bout, here are five key things to know about Los Angeles’ opponent ahead of the matchup.

How things are going…

The Cardinals are 2-4 on the season. Their best win came in Week 5 when they defeated the 49ers, 24-23.

Men on the move

The Cardinals boast the seventh-best rushing offense in the NFL. James Connor is No. 8 overall in rushing yards (403). While Connor is Arizona’s workhorse, Kyler Murray is lethal with his legs. Murray has the third-most rushing yards among all quarterbacks (261) and averages 8.7 yards per carry.

Problems with the passing game

The Cardinals’ offensive success has come on the ground, and they’re still trying to put it together through the air. They rank 24th in that department. Arizona selected Marvin Harrison Jr. in the first round to provide a spark, but he’s been up and down this season. He’s also in concussion protocol and his availability for Monday night looms large.

Dud of a defense

The Cardinals’ defense has struggled this season. They’ve given up 27.2 points per game, which ranks 27th in the league. Arizona hasn’t been able to get to opposing quarterbacks, ranking last in the NFL in ESPN’s pass rush win rate metric and 30th in pressure rate. They’ve also been gashed on the ground, surrendering 153.0 rush yards per carry (29th).

Look out for…

Tight end Trey McBride. Even if Harrison is available, Murray will still be looking to involve McBride heavily. McBride has at least six catches in three of his past four games. The Chargers have surrendered the eighth-most receptions to tight ends this season (32).

The Seattle Seahawks will look to climb back to .500 against the Arizona Cardinals, but they will have to do so without some recognizable names.

The only player ruled out prior to Sunday was wide receiver Penny Hart, who injured his hamstring against the Saints. For a second straight week the Seahawks’ receiving corps depth will be tested, as rookie Dareke Young was ruled out before the Week 5 showdown in New Orleans.

Unfortunately, the Seahawks will  be without some of their stalwarts on both the offensive and defensive line. Guard Gabe Jackson and defensive tackle Al Woods both left the Saints game with knee injuries. Woods’ absence will be a tremendous blow to an already ailing run defense

The Cardinals already ruled out their top two running backs in James Connor and Darrel Williams. However, both the Lions and the Saints were without key offensive pieces. It did not stop them from scoring 45 and 39 points respectively. This could be a battle between a stoppable force and a movable object.

2020 NFL draft: RB J.K. Dobbins draft profile

Steelers Wire draft profile featuring RB J.K. Dobbins (Ohio State Buckeyes).

In 2017, J.K. Dobbins became only the second true freshman running back to start a season opener for Ohio State (Maurice Clarett, 2002). Dobbins went on to play in all 42 games for the Buckeyes. He set a freshman record by rushing for 1,403 yards in 2017 and then came back to rush for 1,053 yards in 2018 to become the first Ohio State back ever to have 1,000-yard seasons as a freshman and as a sophomore.

Dobbins’ final collegiate season was even more outstanding as he ran for a career-high 2,003 yards and found the endzone 21 times.

The skilled back is also impressive as a pass-catcher, compiling 645 yards on 71 receptions and five scores.

Dobbins racked up 5,104 yards from scrimmage and 43 TDs as he bid farewell to Ohio State and declared for the 2020 NFL Draft.

Weight | 209

Class | Junior

With a run game that was ranked in the bottom five of the league last season, the Steelers desperately need help at RB. Two things are abundantly clear, James Conner can’t stay healthy, and depth behind him is questionable. Pittsburgh needs a playmaker at the position if it wants to get back to the top of the AFC North. Head coach Mike Tomlin likes his high-volume bell-cows, and Dobbins has just the longevity to do it.
