James Caan was mourned by fans everywhere who remembered his iconic roles in sports movies

Fans of the actor sent tributes about the actor after he died.

James Caan, the terrific actor in so many good movies, died on July 6, per a tweet from his official Twitter account written by his family and finished with what Caan always ended his tweets with “End of tweet.”

Fans of his everywhere took to Twitter to pay tribute, and a lot of the focus — beyond his iconic role as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather — was on his impact on the sports movie genre: He starred in Brian’s Song as Brian Piccolo, he was in Rollerball and The Program.

Legendary actor James Caan passed away on the evening of July 6, 2022. His family announced the news of his passing on social media Thursday afternoon:

Caan’s legendary career began in the 1960s. with a stage turn off-Broadway before making it to Broadway itself in Blood, Sweat and Stanley Poole. Prior to turning to acting, he attended Hofstra University and while he did not graduate, he was classmates with Francis Ford Coppola, a relationship that would continue during his acting days.

Caan’s star turn came on the silver screen, as his former Hofstra classmate cast him as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. For his portrayal of the ill-tempered Corleone brother, Caan earned an Academy Award nomination.

Among his many roles over the years, football fans might recognize him from two sports productions. In 1970 he was cast as Brian Piccolo in the television movie Brian’s Song, playing the Chicago Bears running back who passed away at the age of 26 due to an aggressive form of cancer.

Over 20 years later, Caan portrayed Coach Sam Winters in The Program, a film following a fictional college football team, the ESU Timberwolves, that had an striking similarity to the Florida State Seminoles. Caan played the head coach of the Timberwolves, trying to balance NCAA rules alongside the pressure of getting a once-proud program back to a bowl game.

Caan was 82 years old.

You may know him from The Godfather, or you may know him from Elf, but it seems like most people cherished the work of James Caan. The legendary actor, and former Michigan State football player, passed away at the age of 82 on Thursday, July 7.

Caan went to school at MSU for two years, and played football for the Spartans under the tutelage of Duffy Daugherty in 1956 where he was a quarterback. He then left East Lansing to attend Hofstra University in New York, where he met Francis Ford Coppola, director of The Godfather.

James Caan remembers Gale Sayers, Brian Piccolo, ‘Brian’s Song’

Actor James Caan says he gets emotional every time he watches “Brian’s Song,” the legendary movie.

The 1971 telemovie “Brian’s Song” came to the forefront again last week with the death of Chicago Bears legendary running back Gale Sayers.

The Boston Globe’s Tara Sullivan reached out to actor James Caan, who played the role of Brian Piccolo in the movie that chronicled the friendship between the Bears’ running backs and the tragic death of Piccolo, who suffered from cancer.

Caan said he still cries when he watches the movie, almost 50 years later.

“He was a blessing to the planet Earth,” Caan told the Globe about Sayers, who died after a years-long battle with dementia. “Everybody cries when they see it. I cry every time I see it.

“I grew up with really strong relationships and my friends were real friends and still are. Friends were the only things we had, and their relationship was pretty genuine, and pretty great.

One fascinating note: Billy Dee Williams almost did not have the role of Sayers in the movie. It was originally cast for Louis Gossett Jr, The actor tore his Achilles before filming and Williams was given the role and the rest is history.

Billy Dee Williams, James Caan express sadness over death of Gale Sayers

The stars of “Brian’s Song” expressed sadness at the death of Gale Sayers at 77.

Billy Dee Williams famously played Gale Sayers in “Brian’s Song,” the television movie about the friendship between Chicago Bears running backs Sayers and Brian Piccolo.

The actor was close friends with the “Kansas Comet” through the years and tweeted his sadness Wednesday over the running back’s death at 77.

James Caan played the role of Piccolo, who died at a young age of cancer. He offered his condolences.

Brian’s Song is the ultimate tearjerker. An incredible movie.
