The Buccaneers should seriously consider re-signing Jameis Winston in 2021

See why the Tampa Bay Buccaneers might want to roll the dice on Jameis Winston again in next year’s free agency.

The Tom Brady era is officially underway in Tampa as the Buccaneers kicked off training camp this week with the G.O.A.T. the new man under center.

Gone is former number one overall pick Jameis Winston, who landed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints to backup Drew Brees for a season. Winston, 26, still has plenty of good years ahead of him. Plus, he won’t turn 27 until next January, meaning he could be a highly sought after free agent on the open market next offseason.

Which is why the Buccaneers should seriously consider re-signing him to their roster. As crazy as it sounds, let’s exam the benefits for both parties.

For the Buccaneers, they’ll be getting a quarterback who had a year of tutelage sitting behind one of the best quarterback’s ever in Brees. And, with Brady signed through 2021, Winston could benefit by sitting for another year and learning from the Golden Boy. Two years learning behind two of the game’s greatest quarterbacks ever could pay huge dividends for Winston down the road.

Also, the Buccaneers have a young roster still with guys like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin entering their prime. They don’t want to waste good seasons from those two by rebuilding with a new quarterback post-Brady. Winston already knows this Arians offense, and last season Evans and Godwin both had over 1,100 yards with Winston throwing to them. He can watch Brady running things for a year in 2021, and then jump right in as starter in 2022.

Oh yeah, Brady, Winston and Brees are also part of the exclusive 5,000-yard club.

Winston is loved by his former Bucs teammates, so the locker room chemistry would be there instantly. Plus, for all his off-the-field issues, Winston has been a fixture in and around the Tampa community with his charity work.

It sounds like a crazy idea now, but so did the idea of Tom Brady becoming a Buccaneer.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN thinks Bucs are best fit for Jameis Winston ‘by a fairly wide margin’

See why Jeremy Fowler of ESPN still believes the Buccaneers are the best landing spot for quarterback Jameis Winston.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, like the rest of the NFL world, are eagerly awaiting the start of free agency when the new league year begins on March 18, 2020. In what could easily shape up to be one of the most memorable free agent classes ever, all eyes will be on quarterback Tom Brady and where he lands.

Brady, who could end up leaving the New England Patriots, has been linked to Tampa Bay and its potent young offense. If Brady decides to team up with Bruce Arians, that would be the end for Jameis Winston. But, as Jeremy Fowler of ESPN said in his recent article looking at the pros and cons of keeping Winston, Tampa Bay is still the best spot for the QB, especially if the team wants to win now.

Per Fowler:

“Tampa is still, by a fairly wide margin, his best fit as a player, and his style of play suits Arians’ personality. Winston has the big arm to go vertical, which Arians loves. He’s unafraid to make mistakes, obviously. And the Bucs can convince themselves Winston will reduce the mistakes, as his previous high for interceptions in a season was 18. Railing on Winston’s 30 picks is a layup, but Arians’ attack-at-all-costs offensive approach can’t be discounted here, and the numbers back that up.”

And, one NFL exec had this to say to Fowler about Winston: “[The Bucs]’ll explore their ability to replace him, but won’t be able to.”

Winston had his difficulties in Year 1 under Bruce Arians, but even former Arians pupil Carson Palmer thinks the former number one pick could have a “massive Year 2.” The question is, will the Bucs give Winston that chance?
