Penn State Class of 2023 beefs up with Tomarrion Parker commitment

Penn State just added a massive recruit to its Class of 2023 recruiting haul with Tomarrion Parker.

After making an official visit to Penn State over the weekend, four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Tomarrion Parker[/autotag] had seen enough to make up his mind. On Tuesday, Parker joined Penn State’s Class of 2023 by announcing his commitment to the Nittany Lions.

This is a massive addition to the recruiting class being worked on by head coach James Franklin. In a class that had placed so much emphasis early on on the offensive line, it seems as though the defense is starting to really take form. The addition of Parker is one that helps tip the balance in a big way for the Nittany Lions.

With the commitment of Parker on board, Penn State now has 14 commitments in the Class of 2023. Parker joins [autotag]Jameial Lyons[/autotag] and [autotag]Tyriq Blanding[/autotag] as defensive line additions to the recruiting class. According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Parker is the third highest-ranked recruit on the board for Penn State, trialing only offensive linemen [autotag]Alex Birchmeier[/autotag] and [autotag]J’ven Williams[/autotag]. It may be safe to say the bodies on the line of scrimmage are powering forward for Penn State in the Class of 2023 after picking up some prized skill position players in the Class of 2022.

Parker is a 6′-4″ 255-pound defensive linemen who supposedly chose Penn State over offers from Florida and Michigan State among his final schools. According to 247Sports, Parker is the No. 48 recruit overall in the Class of 2023. Perhaps making this recruiting victory even more impressive is Parker chose Penn State over another key offer from Alabama. Parker is from Alabama, so securing a four-star defensive lineman away from the state when the Crimson Tide had an offer extended is pretty impressive.

Penn State’s Class of 2023 is still looking to add a few more key pieces to the recruiting class, and there is still plenty of room for more help on the defensive side of the football.

Penn State makes top 8 for four-star in-state athlete

A key Penn State recruiting target in 2023 has released his top 8 schools. Is Penn State still in the running?

If [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag]’s mission is to keep the top talent from Pennsylvania close to home, then Sunday’s recruiting update from Rodney Gallagher should be considered a step in the right direction. Gallagher, a four-star recruit in the Class of 2023 revealed his top eight schools, and Penn State was among those named.

Gallagher is a 5-10 athlete who has the ability to play receiver, and he has been used as a slot receiver. Gallagher is the second-ranked player in Pennsylvania in the Class of 2023 according to the recruit rankings from 247Sports, and he makes the cut of the top 100 players in the country. Penn State has a commitment from the top recruit in Pennsylvania already on the board with offensive tackle [autotag]J’ven Williams[/autotag] from Reading. Penn State is considered a favorite for the No. 3 Pennsylvania recruit, edge rusher Ta’Mere Robinson, and last week saw Penn State receive a commitment from edge rusher [autotag]Jameial Lyons[/autotag], the No. 7 recruit in the state. Gallagher recently participated in the Polynesian Bowl.

Penn State was involved early on in the recruiting process for Gallagher. The Nittany Lions were the first FBS program to extend an offer to him in April 2020, with an offer from West Virginia and Michigan coming in the days after. As the offers began coming in from schools like Michigan State, Notre Dame, Arizona State, and Wisconsin, Gallagher made a few visits to Penn State. Gallagher unofficially visited in June 2021, September (for the Auburn game), and once more in October (Indiana game) and November (Michigan game). Franklin made a visit to Gallagher in January of this year as more offers continued to flow in.

The other schools making the top eight for Gallagher along with Penn State included Pittsburgh, Texas, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, West Virginia, and Oregon. Notre Dame hosted Gallagher for a weekend visit, allowing the Uniontown recruit to visit Notre Dame’s spring game. Gallagher says he plans on taking visits to Oregon, Oklahoma State, and Texas in June. He has mentioned he would like to be able to commit to a school sometime in July. He will be making another visit to Penn State before making a decision as well.

Penn State seems to be in a favorable spot in this recruiting battle, but Franklin and his staff will have to push hard to secure his commitment away from Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, or West Virginia. All four have great cases for landing Gallagher.

Jameial Lyons kicks off Penn State’s Blue-White weekend with commitment

Penn State kicks off Blue-White Game weekend with a four-star commitment from Jameial Lyons

Penn State is wrapping up spring football practices this weekend with the annual Blue-White Game in Beaver Stadium, but the weekend is already off to a nice start for head coach James Franklin and his staff. [autotag]Jameial Lyons[/autotag], a four-star edge rusher from Philadelphia, gave his verbal commitment to the Nittany Lions on Friday afternoon.

Lyons has long been expected to be Penn State’s to lose on the recruiting trail. A four-star edge rusher according to his 247Sports recruiting profile, Lyons actually moved up his commitment date by a few months in order to commit to the Nittany Lions. Lyons previously wanted to make his announcement official in August, on his mother’s birthday, but the decision to move up the commitment date suggests there was little competition for Penn State to worry about.

Lyons chose Penn State over offers from West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Illinois, and Cincinnati (the other schools in his top five). But when it came to visits, Penn State hosted Lyons far more than the other candidates in the running, which is the big reason why recruiting insiders had been heavily leaning on Penn State for their official predictions for Lyons.

Lyons is the first defensive lineman to hop on board for Penn State’s Class of 2023. Much of the focus on Penn State’s current recruiting cycle has addressed the concerns on the offensive line. Of the nine commitments prior to Lyons, four were offensive linemen ([autotag]Alex Birchmeier[/autotag], [autotag]J’ven Williams[/autotag], [autotag]Joshua Miller[/autotag], [autotag]Anthony Donkoh[/autotag]).

Penn State has picked up the verbal commitments of two of the top players in Pennsylvania, according to the 247Sports recruit rankings for the state. Williams is the top-rated recruit from the Keystone State, and Lyons is No. 13. Cornerback [autotag]Lamont Payne[/autotag] is the No. 10 recruit from Pennsylvania. There could be more success from within the state on the way at some point as well. Edge rusher [autotag]Ta’Mere Robinson[/autotag] (No. 3 overall in Pennsylvania) from Pittsburgh is widely projected to commit to Penn State, as is linebacker [autotag]Phil Picciotti[/autotag] of Perkasie (No. 8 in PA). At the moment, the only in-state recruit in the top 10 to get away from Penn State has been linebacker Josiah Trotter, who recently committed to West Virginia.

The commitment of Lyons is the first big headline from what is typically an important recruiting weekend for Penn State. Whether or not more commitments are on their way this weekend remains to be seen, but the spring game for any school is always used as a nice recruiting tool, and Franklin will hope to make a good sales pitch to any recruits in attendance this weekend.

Penn State four-star target moves up commitment date to this week

Feels like some really good recruiting news is on the horizon for James Franklin heading into the Blue-White Game.

Penn State could be heading into the Blue-White Game weekend riding some momentum on the recruiting trail after one four-star target has decided to move up his commitment date by a significant amount. [autotag]Jameial Lyons[/autotag], a defensive end from Roman Catholic in Philadelphia, announced via Twitter he will reveal his college decision this Friday afternoon.

Lyons was originally planning on making his final decision later in the summer before starting his senior year of high school. His decision to move up the commitment date to Friday strongly suggests Penn State is about to add him to their list of Class of 2023 verbal commitments.

The first crystal ball pick for Lyons to Penn State was submitted just within the last week, and two more have been filed to 247Sports following suit.

Lyons attended Penn State’s junior day event at the end of January. He also made a pair of unofficial visits to Happy Valley in 2021, in July for the Lasch Bash and again in September for the home game against Auburn. Lyons also attended Penn State’s football camp last summer. Penn State is the only school Lyons has reportedly visited at this point in time, which is why he is considered extremely likely to end up at Penn State.

Other schools in the top five for Lyons include West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Illinois, and Cincinnati.

Penn State’s annual Blue-White Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 23, one day after Lyons announces his decision.

First crystal ball pick favors Penn State for Philly edge rusher

The first crystal ball pick favors Penn State for this Class of 2023 edge rusher from Philadelphia

Penn State may have missed out on securing a commitment from one defensive standout from the City of Brotherly Love, but the Nittany Lions are the early pick for the commitment of another rising defensive player from Philadelphia in the Class of 2023.

[autotag]Jameial Lyons[/autotag], a 6-4 edge rusher from Roman Catholic in Philadelphia, is. three-star recruit in the Class of 2023. Penn State is widely considered to be a runaway favorite in his recruiting process, and the first official crystal ball pick on 247Sports has been placed in favor of the Nittany Lions. Brian Dohn, a national recruiting analyst for 247Sports, cast his crystal ball pick for Penn State earlier this week.

Four-star DL from Philly puts Penn State in his top five

The current recruiting prediction cooked up by the On3Sports recruiting prediction machine is also lopsided in favor of Penn State, with Penn State having a 98.9% chance of securing a commitment from the Philly recruit. Ryan Snyder, who covers Penn State recruiting for On3Sports, has a Penn State prediction on the board as well.

Penn State appears to be in the mix along with West Virginia, Nebraska, Cincinnati, Illinois, Pittsburgh, and Temple. Lyons holds a number of other offers, including from Maryland, Virginia Tech, and Boston College.

But time will tell if any other school can make a worthy enough sales pitch to sway the predictions in another direction.

Lyons is scheduled to announce his college decision on August 4, 2022, according to 247Sports.

Four-star DL from Philly puts Penn State in his top five

Penn State makes top five for a four-star defensive lineman in Class of 2023 from Philly.

Penn State headed into the first weekend of spring football practices with their eyes on a pretty notable recruiting weekend. And the weekend got off on the right foot with the news that the Nittany Lions were in the top five for in-state four-star defensive lineman Jameial Lyons.

Lyons unveiled his top five on Friday with a post on his Twitter account. As many expected would be the case, Penn State was included in the top five. Early recruiting projections predict Lyons will eventually give his commitment to Penn State (On3 Sports gives Penn State a 98.6% chance of securing the commitment from Lyons, for example).

Penn State’s work on developing defensive linemen over the years has certainly been a draw for recruits playing in the trenches. The ability to mold potential first-round picks at the position such as Odafe Oweh and, perhaps, Arnold Ebiketie is certainly noticed. And Penn State’s efforts to securing the top players within the state are well-documented, some years yielding better results than others.

Lyons’ top five reveal included West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Illinois, and Cincinnati.
