49ers fear torn ACL for CB Jamar Taylor

The 49ers may have lost cornerback Jamar Taylor for the season with an ACL injury.

The 49ers fear they may have lost another player to a season-ending injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Sunday in his press conference following the 49ers’ 23-20 victory over the Rams that the team suspects cornerback Jamar Taylor tore his ACL.

Taylor was carted off with an apparent knee injury late in the first half. He was blocked while making his way toward Rams TE Gerald Everett and it looked like his foot stuck in the ground. He immediately reached for his left knee and was on the ground working with trainers until the cart came out for him.

He was starting in the slot with CB K’Waun Williams sidelined by a high ankle sprain. Taylor played with the first team for most of camp when Williams was dealing with a calf injury. He was cut initially, but re-signed to the practice squad prior to Week 4 when Williams was working through a hip issue.

Taylor played in eight games for the 49ers and came up with a pair of interceptions, one sack and three pass breakups. Emmanuel Moseley went in at nickel corner with Taylor out.

49ers CB Jamar Taylor carted off with leg injury

49ers slot corner Jamar Taylor appeared to injure his knee and was carted off vs. the Rams.

The 49ers on Sunday suffered another injury that appears to be significant. Slot corner Jamar Taylor went down holding his left knee after getting involved in a tackle on Rams tight end Gerald Everett.

It appeared his left knee buckled when he got blocked and he immediately reached for his leg.

Taylor was taken off on a cart and he was visibly shaken as he was heading to the locker room. He was starting for K’Waun Williams who’s out with a high ankle sprain.

Emmanuel Moseley entered the game at nickel with Taylor out.

49ers intercept Cam Newton for a third time

The 49ers snagged a third interception off Patriots QB Cam Newton.

The 49ers got their third interception off Cam Newton and the Patriots in the waning minutes of the third quarter. Newton’s throw intended for Julian Edelman bounced off the receiver’s hand and into the arms of 49ers nickel corner Jamar Taylor. Taylor joins Emmanuel Moseley and Fred Warner with interceptions vs. the Patriots.

49ers sign CB Jamar Taylor to practice squad

The 49ers signed CB Jamar Taylor to their practice squad, and they may need him right away due to injury problems.

The 49ers on Friday announced the signing of cornerback Jamar Taylor to their practice squad. Taylor takes the vacant spot on the 16-man unit after tight end Chase Harrell was suspended for six games.

San Francisco originally signed Taylor in early July, but he was let go at final cuts. Reports from training camp indicated Taylor may make the club as insurance for nickel cornerback K’Waun Williams after spending most of camp there while Williams dealt with a calf injury.

Now the 49ers have called on Taylor again with Williams officially ‘questionable’ with a hip injury for Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Even if Williams gets to play Sunday, Taylor should still get a promotion to the active roster with Emmanuel Moseley and Ahkello Witherspoon both out.

Taylor was a second-round pick of the Dolphins in 2013. He also spent time with Cleveland, Arizona, Denver, Atlanta and Seattle. In 90 career games he has three interceptions and 31 pass breakups.

Lions worked out 4 DBs including Jamar Taylor, Grant Haley

Jamar Taylor and Grant Haley are the most prominent names

Faced with a rash of injures in the defensive backfield, the Detroit Lions brought in four free agent DBs for workouts on Monday.

Most prominent among the names is journeyman Jamar Taylor. An experienced slot corner who has played in a wide variety of defensive schemes and teams — he’s been active for six different teams in the last five seasons — Taylor was originally a second-round pick by the Dolphins in 2013.

The others:

  • CB Grant Haley
  • CB Alexander Myres
  • CB Jaylen Watkins

Haley started three games for the New York Giants in 2019 and was a second-round pick out of Penn State in 2018. He is a Detroit-area native and registered a sack in the meeting with the Lions in 2019.

None of the players have been signed as of yet.

Report: 49ers to release CB Jamar Taylor

Cornerback Jamar Taylor was informed of his release as part of the 49ers roster cuts.

The 49ers roster cuts are underway. Matt Barrows of the Athletic reported San Francisco will release cornerback Jamar Taylor as part of their cutdown from 80 players to 53.

Taylor signed after cornerback Teez Tabor was released with an injury. He worked his way into the nickel corner role in camp when K’Waun Williams went down with a calf injury, but he didn’t do enough to earn a roster spot in a relatively crowded group.

The math of the 53-man roster doesn’t leave a ton of wiggle room at cornerback, and the 49ers are likely to only keep five players there. Williams is one, along with Richard Sherman, Ahkello Witherspoon, Emmanuel Moseley and Jason Verrett.

Verrett suffered a low-grade hamstring strain earlier in the week, but the injury wasn’t enough to push the veteran off the roster and open a slot for Taylor.

Taylor has seven NFL seasons under his belt with the Dolphins, Browns, Cardinals, Broncos, Falcons and Seahawks. He has 31 pass breakups and three interceptions. Early word of his release is an indicator that the team doesn’t plan to make him part of their 16-man practice squad.

The 49ers will have to have their roster cut down to 53 players by Saturday at 1:00 pm PST.

Can CB Jamar Taylor be a factor in 49ers roster battle?

New 49ers cornerback Jamar Taylor has special teams experience and enough versatility to be a factor in the battle for cornerback spots.

The 49ers on Monday announced the release of cornerback Teez Tabor, and the subsequent addition of veteran cornerback Jamar Taylor to fill the open roster spot. Tabor was one of our under-the-radar defensive players to watch, but can Taylor fill that void as well?

Taylor entered the NFL as a second-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2013. He spent three seasons in South Beach, two in Cleveland, and then partial seasons in Denver, Arizona, Atlanta and Seattle. He’s played 90 games with 41 starts in seven seasons, and has three interceptions to go along with 31 pass breakups.

Experience is going to be Taylor’s best asset in a relatively shallow 49ers’ cornerback room. Richard Sherman, Emmanuel Moseley, Ahkello Witherspoon and K’Waun Williams all figure to make the roster. The back end of the roster is less certain, especially with DJ Reed nursing a torn pectoral.

While he has more experience than any other player on San Francisco’s preseason depth chart, his production hasn’t always been good. His three interceptions all came in 2016 as a member of the Browns. That was also the only year Pro Football Focus graded him above average overall and in coverage. Taylor’s allowed 18 touchdowns and 112.0 passer rating when targeted per PFF.

He’s certainly not going to push for a starting job, but a roster spot isn’t out of the question. Taylor has good speed and special teams experience at every place he’s played. He also has extensive NFL game time in the slot and outside. That versatility would give the 49ers some added flexibility in the back end of the cornerback depth chart.

There’s no sort of guarantee Taylor winds up making the 49ers’ final roster. He’s not been good enough for any extended period of time to earn that designation. However, his ability to play multiple spots and contribute on special teams should give him a slew of angles to a job. Ultimately San Francisco hopes to not need their players buried down the depth chart, but Taylor could wind up being an improvement for the 49ers’ group of corners.

49ers sign CB Jamar Taylor, waive Teez Tabor

The 49ers made some changes to their cornerback room this week.

The 49ers made a couple of changes to their cornerback group on Monday, signing one player and waiving another. The team announced it has added free agent Jamar Taylor and waived Teez Tabor with a non-football injury designation.

Taylor is entering his eighth season in the NFL after spending 2019 with the Seahawks and Falcons. He hasn’t started a game since 2018 when he was with the Cardinals, and has 41 career starts in the NFL.

He came into the league as a second-round pick by the Dolphins after an impressive career at Boise State. His career got off to a slow start, however, and he didn’t start more than six games in a season until 2016 with the Browns. He has three career interceptions, all of which came in that year.

The 49ers signed Tabor to their practice squad last October after he was cut by the Lions before the 2019 season began. As a second-round pick in the 2017 draft, his release from Detroit came as somewhat of a surprise.

In five starts (22 games) for the Lions in 2017 and 2018, he made 42 tackles but didn’t break up a single pass or record an interception. His future in the NFL is now very much up in the air after being cut for a second time.

The 9 worst free agent signings in the John Schneider era

The Seattle Seahawks have had a lot of success under general manager John Schneider, but he has made his fair share of mistakes as well.

The Seattle Seahawks, under general manager John Schneider, built a near-dynasty in the early part of the decade thanks to a handful of excellent, career-defining draft selections – including Richard Sherman, Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner, K.J. Wright, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas – all who well outperformed their draft spot.

Schneider also proved capable of making excellent trades to help the team, including acquiring Marshawn Lynch back in 2010 and more recent trades for Jadeveon Clowney and Quandre Diggs.

Perhaps Schneider’s biggest area of weakness is on the free agent market. Despite excellent, under the radar signings like Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril, Bradley McDougald and the undrafted addition of Doug Baldwin, the Seahawks have also dished out a handful of ugly deals that, at times, hampered the franchise’s bottom line while hurting the product on the field.

Here is a look at the nine worst free agent signings during Schneider’s tenure with the Seattle Seahawks, starting with a few who just missed the cut:

CB Jamar Taylor (2019)

CB Byron Maxwell (2018)

K Sebastian Janikowski (2018)

Tracking what happened to the draft picks the Browns traded away

Tracking what happened to the draft picks the Browns traded away in the 2020 NFL Draft

Andrew Berry and the Cleveland Browns made a couple of trades during the 2020 NFL Draft. The rookie GM accepted two separate offers to move back a few spots.

Here’s what became of those draft trades.

No. 41 overall

The Browns traded No. 41 overall in the second round to the Indianapolis Colts. In return the Browns received No. 44 and No. 160 overall. Cleveland used those picks to select Grant Delpit and Nick Harris, respectively.

The Colts moved up to land Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor at No. 41. With RB not a need in Cleveland, it’s a good return on a pick that the Colts used on a player the Browns weren’t going to select anyway.

No. 74 overall

The Browns picked up No. 88 overall and a third-round pick in 2021 from the New Orleans Saints in exchange for the team’s first third-round selection. Cleveland snagged DT Jordan Elliott after moving back and still owns the extra 2021 pick.

New Orleans drafted Wisconsin OLB Zack Baun at 74. The Browns also sent the Saints a seventh-round pick, No. 244 overall. The Saints used that pick on Iowa QB Nathan Stanley.

Baun would have been an interesting fit in Cleveland. He’s a better all-around player with much more positional versatility than Jacob Phillips, the LB the Browns chose later in the third. Baun fell because of concerns about his size, or lack thereof.

No. 155 overall

This was originally the Browns’ pick, but it was traded to the Buffalo Bills at the end of the 2019 preseason in exchange for guard Wyatt Teller. The Browns original 6th-round pick, No. 188 overall, was also included in that deal. Buffalo took Georgia Southern kicker Tyler Bass with that pick.

The Bills traded this spot to Minnesota in the huge, multi-pick deal last month to acquire WR Stefon Diggs. Minnesota didn’t keep the pick either. They traded No. 155 to the Chicago Bears for a fourth-round pick in 2021. Chicago used the 155th pick on Tulsa EDGE Trevis Gipson.

No. 224 overall

Cleveland sent this pick, it’s original 7th-rounder, to the Tennessee Titans last August in exchange for WR Taywan Taylor. The Titans kept the pick and used it to select Hawaii QB Cole McDonald.

Donovan Peoples-Jones was selected by the Browns with the pick acquired from the Arizona Cardinals in the Jamar Taylor trade back in 2018.
