Heat to convert undrafted forward Jamal Cain to two-way contract

Heat rookie Jamal Cain will reportedly be converted to a two-way contract after a strong start in the preseason.

Miami Heat rookie Jamal Cain will reportedly be converted to a two-way contract after a strong start in the preseason, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Cain, who went undrafted this year out of Oakland, was named the Horizon League Co-Player of the Year after averaging 19.9 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals as a fifth-year senior. He was the only player in the conference to average double figures in points and rebounds.

The 6-foot-7 forward played five games with the Heat in summer league, averaging eight points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals. The team then signed him to an Exhibit 10 contract in late July with the expectation that he could compete for a two-way deal.

Through the first three games of the preseason, Cain is averaging 12 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.7 assists on 44.4% shooting from 3-point range. He has totaled 34 points, 17 rebounds, seven steals and four assists over his last two games.

Cain will split his time this season between Miami and the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA G League. He is eligible to spend no more than 50 games in the NBA and will earn a flat salary equal to 50% of the minimum salary applicable to a player with zero years of service.

UDFA-target Oakland forward Jamal Cain worked out for the Thunder in pre-draft visit

The 23-year-old spent five seasons in college.

Former Oakland forward Jamal Cain worked out for the Oklahoma City Thunder in a pre-draft visit, per his Instagram story.

Cain played five seasons in college with the first four being at Marquette and the final one being at Oakland. The 23-year-old averaged 19.9 points, 10.2 rebounds and 0.6 blocks on 49.9 percent shooting in 30 games last season.

Cain is likely an undrafted free agent for the Thunder and other teams as his name has not really been mentioned in many mock drafts.

The Thunder will likely have a chance to sign him following the draft and can be added onto the G League’s Oklahoma City Blue roster for next season.

Lakers draft prospect profile: Jamal Cain

Our look at Oakland University swingman Jamal Cain.

Just because the Los Angeles Lakers do not have a pick in the upcoming NBA draft doesn’t mean they’re not doing their due diligence on draft prospects.

The team is reportedly interested in acquiring a second-round pick, and many expect it to also try to sign at least one undrafted player as a free agent.

One player the Lakers recently brought in for a workout is Jamal Cain, a 6-foot-7 swingman who played this season for Oakland University in Auburn Hills, Michigan, a Detroit suburb.

Cain played four seasons for Marquette University before transferring to Oakland.

Here is a look at Cain.

Alabama senior Keon Ellis among prospects to work out for Hawks

Alabama senior Keon Ellis and junior Jaden Shackelford are among the prospects that will participate in a private workout with the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

Ellis, who was named to the SEC All-Defensive team, averaged 12.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.8 assists in 33 games. He led the Crimson Tide in rebounding, steals, free-throw percentage (88.1) and 3-point percentage (36.6) this season.

Shackelford placed on the All-SEC second team after posting 16.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 33 games. He became the 53rd player in program history to reach 1,000 career points (1,475) and led the team in scoring.

Atlanta enters the pre-draft process with the 16th and 44th picks, respectively. They also hosted workouts on Monday and appear to be ramping up their draft preparation with the combine set to take place May 16-22.

In addition to Ellis and Shackelford, the Hawks will also work out Virginia Tech forward Keve Aluma, Mississippi State forward Garrison Brooks, Oakland forward Jamal Cain and Auburn guard Allen Flanigan on Wednesday.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.
