Quandre Diggs remains unsigned

Quandre Diggs remains unsigned

It is tough to get work as a safety in the NFL these days.

Earlier this March, the Seattle Seahawks cut ties with two of their starting safeties in Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs. It was a natural time to part, as their play was declining, and injuries were continuing to mount for Adams. By moving on from the pair, the Seahawks were able to free up nearly $27.5 million in cap space.

As we approach training camp, we are obviously well past the first, second and even third waves of free agency. Recently, Jamal Adams found his third NFL home by signing a one-year vet minimum with the Tennessee Titans. However, his running mate in Seattle’s secondary remains unsigned.

But for Diggs, he remains in search of his next landing spot. Actually, so are several other of his contemporaries. Right now, there is an abundance of big name defensive backs just waiting for their phones to ring.

The modern NFL has shifted heavily away from giving out big money to safeties. The Seahawks were a bit of an outlier by handing over monster extensions and having so much money tied up in the position over the last few years. Last season, Seattle had Adams, Diggs and Julian Love. Adams was playing on a four-year, $72 million contract. Diggs was on a three-year, $40 million extension, and they had signed Love to a two-year $12 million contact.

Sheesh.

While Diggs’ play has fallen off a bit, he is still more than capable of providing quality play to whicher team signs him. With career earnings of over $51 million, the 31-year old veteran is likely content to waiting for the right opportunity. Inevitably, there will be an injury at safety to some team in the league at any point from the start of training camp all through the end of the season. The idea Diggs, or the majority of the names on the list above, won’t play in 2024 is not probable.

Of course, there remains the slim possibility Diggs might find his way back to Seattle. The Seahawks are not “shutting the door” on any player they cut, and everyone knows in the NFL it is not personal, it is just cold hard business. Although, with two safties signed in free agency in Rayshawn Jenkins and K’Von Wallace, the chances are not favorable to a reunion.

Still, never say never when it comes to the NFL.

Jamal Adams contract details with Titans: one-year veteran minimum

On Thursday it was announced that former Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets safety Jamal Adams had agreed to terms with the Tennessee Titans. Now, we are aware of what said terms look like.

According to Ari Meirov and the Titans Wire, Tennessee will be signing Adams to a one-year deal worth $1.125 million – the veteran minimum. Certainly a far cry from the four-year, $72 million dollar extension the Seahawks gave him in the 2021 offseason.

Jamal Adams is on a mission to rehabilitate his career. After a strong inuagural season in Seattle, one where he recorded 9.5 sacks, he never lived up to the high bar he set for himself. His 2021 was lackluster, his 2022 ended after the first game thanks to a torn quad, and his 2023 was off and on as he battled to even stay on the field due to injuries.

For Tennessee, this could be an incredible bargain for them. At this point, signing a former three-time Pro Bowler and one time All-Pro to such a low contract is a low risk, high reward situation. If Adams is able to remain somewhat healthy, and the Titans are able to utilize his skillset as a pass rusher more than Seattle did the last three years, then he could be a key asset for their defense.

If things don’t work out, well, it’s not like Tennessee is trapped with a weighty contract.

Still, Adams is only 28. Injuries have likely taken a few years off his NFL shelf life, but perhaps a change in scenery and defensive ideology can help get his career back on track.

Could Titans move Jamal Adams to linebacker in 2024?

There are a few reasons to believe that the Titans could utilize Jamal Adams at linebacker in 2024.

The Tennessee Titans inked safety Jamal Adams to a one-year deal, but could the team have plans to move him to linebacker?

This isn’t a question I would’ve asked before seeing a segment on NFL Network in which insider Ian Rapoport wondered aloud about Tennessee moving Adams to linebacker in 2024.

“I was actually a little curious about where they signed him to play,” Rapoport said. “Is he going to move to linebacker? Is he going to be a safety? He is a strong safety (and) the hope for them is that he lends some of the veteran leadership on the back end, as well.”

Adding more fuel to the fire that a change to linebacker could be in the cards for Adams is a report from April that stated the Seattle Seahawks were considering bringing Adams back to play weakside linebacker.

When asked about what his exact role will be during his appearance on the Official Titans Podcast, Adams said he wasn’t sure.

“I don’t know that yet,” Adams admitted. “I don’t know that yet, but I’m excited to learn my role. For me, I just want to come in and earn the respect of my teammates.”

Of course, given the fact that he has been a safety his entire career, the most likely scenario has him staying there in Nashville and being the starter next to Amani Hooker.

However, Adams moving to linebacker isn’t exactly crazy. After all, he’s at his best when playing in the box and already has many of the traits of a linebacker. Adding to that, the Titans aren’t exactly strong at the position, even at their starting spots.

There is definitely a scenario where Adams could see at least some time at linebacker in 2024, but for now we project him to start at safety.

Details of Jamal Adams’ contract with Titans revealed

The contract details for the Titans’ deal with safety Jamal Adams dropped on Friday morning.

When news broke of the Tennessee Titans‘ signing of veteran safety Jamal Adams, it was reported to be a one-year deal but we did not get the financial terms of the contract.

But now we have them — according to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, Adams inked a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum of $1.125 million guaranteed.

The Titans getting Adams for that cheap comes as no surprise. After all, the 28-year-old has seen a steep decline from his status as an elite safety in recent years, partly due to injury, and figured to get a “prove it” deal.

While Adams wasn’t our first choice, he’s still a solid signing for the Titans, who had a need at safety. This is the very definition of a low-risk, high-reward deal.

Adams will begin the journey of trying to get his career back on track when he and the Titans take part in training camp later this month.

Jamal Adams sums up what he brings to Titans in 3 words

Jamal Adams needed just three words to sum up what he brings to the table with the Titans.

The Tennessee Titans made a significant addition to their secondary on Thursday with the signing of veteran safety Jamal Adams.

Granted, Adams’ career has seen a decline in recent years after he was one of the best safeties in the NFL, but it’s a significant signing because he figures to have a starting role.

Adding to that, bringing Adams aboard improves the depth at the position because it pushes Elijah Molden to the No. 3 spot.

Shortly after the Titans announced the move, Adams sat down with The Voice of the Titans, Mike Keith, and summed up what he brings to the team with three words.

“Leadership, swagger, energy,” Adams said.

The concerns about Adams are valid, but he’s the right fit for the Titans’ defense on paper.

His ability to play in the box makes him a great complement to Amani Hooker, and he’s at his best when sent to get after the quarterback, which fits the aggressive style of defense Tennessee will play.

Remembering the impact of the Jamal Adams trade on the New York Jets

How did the Jamal Adams trade help the New York Jets rebuild?

With Jamal Adams signing with the Tennessee Titans as a free agent on Thursday, it is important to remember the impact the safety had on the New York Jets.

Most notably and perhaps most important for the Jets was the haul of picks that the organization received in exchange for Adams.

That’s no slam or slight on Adams, who was wonderfully impactful for the Jets and a most unique weapon on their defense. But Adams was so coveted around the NFL for his unique skillset that he was more valuable to the Jets as a trade asset rather than as a star on their defense.

Four years ago this month, the Jets sent Adams and a 2022 fourth-round pick for the Seattle Seahawks’ first-round picks in 2021 and 2022 as well as a third-round pick in 2021. The Jets also obtained safety Bradley McDougald in the trade.

The Jets used the selections obtained from Seattle to kickstart their rebuild.

  • They used the first-round pick they obtained from Seattle in the 2021 NFL draft (No. 23 overall as well as the third-round pick from the trade) as part of another trade package to move up in the draft and select guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. The offensive lineman was named to the PFWA All-Rookie team and has been rock solid for the franchise.
  • In the 2022 NFL draft, the Jets used Seattle’s first-round pick (No. 10 overall) to select Garrett Wilson. The wide receiver was the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Both trades have worked out very well for the Jets and have been pivotal in revamping the offensive line.

Adams is set for his eighth season in the NFL, having spent the first three with the Jets. He was a Pro Bowl selection his final two years in New York.

Since being traded by the Jets, he was a Pro Bowl selection in 2020 during his first year in Seattle. He hasn’t been a Pro Bowl or an All-Pro selection since.

Colts’ division rival Titans sign safety Jamal Adams

Another free agent safety is off the market with the Colts’ AFC South rival, the Tennessee Titans, signing Jamal Adams.

Another free agent safety is off the market with the Colts’ AFC South rival, the Tennessee Titans, signing Jamal Adams.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, this is a one-year deal for Adams. At this time, contract details have not yet been reported.

Adams joins the Titans after spending the last four seasons with Seattle. In 2023, Adams allowed 28 receptions on 34 targets, holding pass-catchers to just 10.4 yards per reception. He also generated seven pressures as a blitzer.

Adams is another addition to the defensive side of the ball for the Titans, which has been a point of emphasis this offseason.

So far we’ve seen Tennessee hire Dennard Wilson as the defensive coordinator, along with adding L’Jarius Sneed, Chidobe Awuzie, Kenneth Murray, and Sebastian Joseph-Day. The Titans also used five of their draft picks on defense as well.

Last season, the Titans ranked 16th in points per game allowed. They were 23rd in yards per pass attempt surrendered and fifth in yards per rush.

The safety position is, of course, a big unknown for the Colts. The secondary as a whole last season gave up too many big plays while not making enough plays on the football.

Re-signing Julian Blackmon helps provide stability, but it’s that free safety role that remains the unknown. Through offseason programs, Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas were sharing those starting reps.

While the Colts could benefit from added competition at free safety, depth may also be a need as well with Daniel Scott being placed on IR with a season-ending Achilles injury.

Given that Adams has spent the majority of his NFL snaps playing in the box, he probably wasn’t going to be a fit for the Colts, given that they moved Blackmon to that role last season and he had a very good year.

In addition to Adams being signed by Tennessee, the Rams recently re-signed John Johnson, while Tashaun Gipson is facing a six game suspension.

Whether or not the Colts are actively trying to add to the safety position is an unknown, but following the draft, GM Chris Ballard did say they would explore remaining free agent options–not specifically safety–to see if there were any potential fits.

“Between now and the start of the season – there are still some good players out there,” Ballard said after the draft. “There’s some veterans out there that can still play. We’ll dig and investigate all of them and then make a decision if we think they are the right fit for us as we go along.”

Veteran former LSU safety Jamal Adams signs with Tennessee Titans

Jamal Adams has found his home for the 2024 season.

It took longer than some expected, but former LSU safety [autotag]Jamal Adams[/autotag] has found his home for the 2024 NFL season. On Thursday, Adams signed a one-year deal with the Tennessee Titans.

The 28-year-old was once seen as a rising star in the league, but injuries and middling play have diminished his standing as he went unsigned for most of the free agency period.

A former All-SEC and All-American player at LSU, Adams was the sixth overall pick in 2017. He immediately became a star for the New York Jets, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2018 and 2019. He was named an All-Pro in both campaigns, including First-Team honors in the latter.

He was traded to the Seahawks ahead of 2020 amid contract disputes, and while he was a Second-Team All-Pro once again that season, earning a four-year extension, he played in just 22 games over the next three years — including just nine in 2023 — and was released by the team following the 2023 season.

Adams’ talent is undeniable, but he has struggled to stay on the field in recent years. If he can do that with Tennessee this season, he’s young enough to get back to high-level play.

Jeffery Simmons slams Titans media, reacts to Jamal Adams signing

Jeffery Simmons is not a fan of how some reporters cover the Titans.

As Tennessee Titans star defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons returns for his sixth season with the team, he’s witnessing quite the turnover around him, especially in the secondary.

After adding L’Jarius Sneed and Chidobe Awuzie earlier this offseason, the Titans made yet another addition to their secondary on Thursday, with the team inking Jamal Adams to a one-year deal.

Adams is expected to take the other starting safety job next to Amani Hooker, and while he certainly comes with plenty of concerns, he’s an intriguing addition for a few reasons. You can check out more of our thoughts on the signing right here.

While the signing received mixed reactions on social media, Big Jeff made it quite clear he’s a fan of it. “Let him cook” is a reference to general manager Ran Carthon, by the way.

After sharing his reaction to the Adams signing, Big Jeff also took time out to criticize Titans media for being negative about the team’s players.

Simmons didn’t specifically mention any reporters (although Titans fans can probably guess who he’s talking about), and it’s also unclear if his comment was spurred on by some of the negative reactions to the Adams signing.

“I just be seeing a lot of tweets and hit that bookmark! How do some of you guys cover us (Titans) but hate us so much,” Simmons wrote.

It’ll be interesting to see if any reporters ask Simmons about his comment when training camp rolls around later this month.

Former Seahawks safety Jamal Adams signs with Tennessee Titans

Former Seahawks safety Jamal Adams signs with Tennessee Titans

A former Seattle Seahawk has found himself a new NFL home. It was announced Thursday morning safety Jamal Adams has agreed to terms with the Tennessee Titans. After three seasons with the Seahawks, Adams is returning to the AFC, albeit this time in the south.

Adams was cut by the Seahawks in early March, alongside fellow safety Quandre Diggs. The Titans themselves announced Adams’ arrival to the Music City via their Twitter account.

As mentioned in ESPN’s Brady Henderson’s tweet above, the Seahawks did have interest in potentially bringing Adams back, but in a different role. However, it is most likely for the best for both sides this possibility – however slight it might have been – is now officially off the table.

Adams is a uniquely gifted player, but he was a square peg and Seattle was trying to fit him into a round hole. The Seahawks never could quite figure out a way to maximize his talents, which were closer to a pass rusher/linebacker type instead of a pure safety. He is now another player in an increasingly long line of enigmatic players, alongside Percy Harvin and Jimmy Graham, where Seattle was unable to make the most out of him.

Unfortunately, injuries helped define Adams’ tenure in Seattle. He set an NFL record with 9.5 sacks – the most by a defensive back in a single season – but never brought down another quarterback as a Seahawk. He missed the entirety of the 2022 season, and struggled to stay on the field even last year.

Now, Adams looks to restart his career in Nashville. Since the Seahawks are not slated to play the Titans this year, 12’s will not get a chance to see Adams play against them.

Here’s hoping for all the best for Adams in Tennessee.
