Jamahal Hill wants first UFC title defense vs. Jiri Prochazka, willing to wait until summer

If Jamahal Hill becomes champion at UFC 283, he wants former champ Jiri Prochazka as his first challenger.

RIO DE JANEIRO – If [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] becomes champion at UFC 283, he wants [autotag]Jiri Prochazka[/autotag] as his first challenger.

Hill (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) takes on Glover Teixeira (33-8 MMA, 16-6 UFC) for the vacant light heavyweight title in Saturday’s main event at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ABC and early prelims on ESPN+.

The 205-pound title most recently was held by Prochazka, but he vacated it due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. Hill has called for the Prochazka fight before and could get his wish if he gets past Teixeira.

“It’s not a secret: I’ve been calling for Jiri for years,” Hill told reporters, including MMA Junkie, Wednesday at UFC 283 media day. “I want Jiri. I’ve been wanting Jiri for years. Even kind of listening to Glover talk this week and he kind of references back to Jiri – I want that fight.”

Dana White labelled Prochazka’s shoulder injury as one of the worst he’s ever seen, but if Prochazka can be ready by summer, Hill would be willing to wait for him just so they can fight.

“It depends on how long,” Hill said. “He’s saying he can be back as early as six months or summer. I’ll wait for that, or next man up.”

The UFC is on the road for its first pay-per-view of the year, and a pair of title fights top the lineup in Brazil.

UFC 283 takes place Saturday at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ABC and early prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former light heavyweight champion [autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag] (33-8 MMA, 16-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) for the belt that was vacated by Jiri Prochazka, who beat Teixeira to win the title in 2022.

Hill is a slight favorite at -140 at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on ex-champ Teixeira is +120 in front of his home-country fans. But Our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Hill with the lead at 7-4 in the picks.

In the co-feature, flyweight champion [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] (21-2-1 MMA, 10-2-1 UFC) takes on former champion and current interim titleholder [autotag]Brandon Moreno[/autotag] (20-6-2 MMA, 8-3-2 UFC) for the fourth time with title unification at stake. Their series is knotted at 1-1-1. Moreno is a -125 favorite at the betting window, but it’s Figueiredo with the slimmest possible lead at 6-5 from our pickers.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Gilbert Burns[/autotag] (20-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) takes on [autotag]Neil Magny[/autotag] (27-9 MMA, 20-8 UFC) at welterweight. Burns is a heavy favorite at nearly 5-1 at the sportsbook, and he’s one of our two unanimous picks at 11-0. Magny only has been this big of a betting underdog one other time in his career, and that was his loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov in June 2022.

Our other unanimous pick is former women’s strawweight champion [autotag]Jessica Andrade[/autotag] (23-9 MMA, 14-7 UFC), who will be looking to keep her momentum at flyweight when she takes on [autotag]Lauren Murphy[/autotag] (16-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC). Like Burns, Andrade is a -475 favorite in front of her home fans and she has a shutout in our picks at 11-0.

And to open the main card, comeback submission specialist [autotag]Paul Craig[/autotag] (16-5-1 MMA, 8-5-1 UFC) meets Brazilian fan favorite [autotag]Johnny Walker[/autotag] (19-7 MMA, 5-4 UFC) at light heavyweight. Walker nearly is a 2-1 favorite and has a 7-4 lead in the picks.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Teixeira (59 percent), Moreno (67 percent), Burns (88 percent), Andrade (84 percent) and Craig (57 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Jamahal Hill: ‘I just didn’t see the same fire that I’m coming with’ in first UFC 283 faceoff with Glover Teixeira

Jamahal Hill got a read from his intense first UFC 283 faceoff with Glover Teixeira in Rio de Janeiro.

RIO DE JANEIRO – [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] got a read from his intense Tuesday faceoff with [autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag].

Hill (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) faced off with Teixeira in Brazil ahead of their vacant light heavyweight title fight, which headlines UFC 283 on Saturday at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ABC and early prelims on ESPN+.

The confident knockout artist locked eyes with former champion Teixeira (33-8 MMA, 16-6 UFC) in what was an intense, but respectful faceoff.

“(I’m) just hungry – ready for the kill,” Hill told reporters, including MMA Junkie on Wednesday at UFC 283 media day. “Whenever I’m in a faceoff or whenever I’m in the cage, you see the difference in my eyes. It’s a competitor, and this competitor is a killer.

“I (saw) some fire in his eyes. I (saw) that he’s just ready. You can tell he’s been here before and he’s ready to go through it, but I just didn’t see the same fire that I’m coming with.”

Hill has knocked out his past three opponents, most recently former title challenger Thiago Santos. But going up against an experienced veteran like Teixeira, Hill thinks he’s in for his toughest challenge to date.

“I’d say Glover would probably be the biggest test of my career to this point, just because the level he’s fought at, the level he’s been fighting at, and just the experience and overall the strength of schedule that he had,” Hill said.
