Chargers make multiple roster moves

The Chargers released Max Duggan on Monday.

The Chargers made four roster moves on Monday.

Los Angeles signed linebacker Frank Ginda and safety Jalyn Phillips. In correspondence, they waived quarterback Max Duggan and wide receiver Leon Johnson.

Ginda spent the past three seasons in the USFL with the Michigan Panthers. He was named the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year. Ginda made stops with the Cardinals, Dolphins, Saints and Falcons. He also played in the AAF and XFL.

Phillips signed with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent in May. He spent five seasons with Clemson and appeared in 60 career games. In that span, Phillips logged 149 tackles, 11 pass breakups and two interceptions.

With Duggan off the roster, Justin Herbert, Easton Stick, and Luis Perez are the quarterbacks on the roster.

Jalyn Phillips agrees to UDFA deal with the Los Angeles Chargers

Phillips will get his NFL opportunity in Los Angeles.

Clemson players and others who didn’t hear their names called in the 2024 NFL draft are getting some excellent opportunities in the undrafted free-agent market.

One of these players is former Clemson safety Jalyn Phillips, who has agreed to a UDFA deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. A secondary that needs depth, Phillips will have an opportunity to fight for a roster spot for a team that could use the help.

During his career with the Tigers, Phillips was credited with 187 tackles (5.0 for loss), 14 pass breakups, two interceptions, a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in 1,558 snaps over 60 career games (29 starts) from 2019-23. He is one of nine players to appear in 60 games in a Clemson uniform.

Clemson defender coming back for 5th season

A veteran Clemson defensive back announced his 2024 plans on Thursday night.

A veteran defensive back is coming back to Clemson for another season.

Clemson safety R.J. Mickens took to X on Thursday to announce he is returning to Clemson for a fifth and final season.

“Clemson, you hold a unique and cherished place in my heart,” Mickens said. “To the best fans in the nation, your unwavering support has made these years some of the best of my life. Your passion and spirit fuel my determination every day.

“After much thought and prayer, I have decided that I will be returning to Clemson for my final year. The university means the world to me, and we’ve got unfinished business.”

Appearing in 46 games over four seasons, Mickens will be one of the most experienced defenders on the Tigers’ roster next season. This year, the Texas native has 41 total tackles, one fumble recovery and three passes defended.

With the departure of safety Andrew Mukuba, who transferred to Texas, and Jalyn Phillips out of eligibility, Mickens’ return will alleviate some of the departures in the Tigers’ secondary.

The Clemson Football program has their Homecoming game today against Wake Forest and we are excited to see the Tigers back in Death Valley for another Homecoming.

With the big day, Clemson has announced their Homecoming captains against the Demon Deacons. The Tigers are heavy favorites in this matchup and we are expecting a great Homecoming performance.

Dabo Swinney expects a freshman safety to receive early snaps

Dabo Swinney expects this freshman safety to see early playing time in 2023.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson coaching staff did a great job building a strong 2023 recruiting class, with multiple freshmen expected to impact the Tigers right out the gate.

One of the players expected to have an early impact is safety Khalil Barnes who has received some praise from coach Swinney heading into the season. The Tigers’ secondary struggled throughout the 2022 season and will look to bounce back in 2023.

While the safety group is led by a top-tier duo of Andrew Mukuba and Jalyn Phillips, Barnes has made a strong impression in camp.

“He’s gonna play. He’ll be on special teams. A lot of these guys, you know, their biggest role initially might be special teams. I mean you’ve got to have it, that’s a third of the game and we can’t have all of our starters playing every special teams snap,” Swinney said.

The expectation is that Barnes will play regularly on special teams, but that won’t be his only action. From what Swinney has seen from the young safety, he feels comfortable putting him into a game in the secondary if needed.

“I think he’s going to be a score special teams guy but, I mean, I think he plays early,” Swinney said. “I think he can compete with anybody we have, any veteran we have. He’s a really talented young player who gets it. He hasn’t played but you know, I think he’s game ready and I don’t think we would hesitate at all to put him in the game. I think he can play multiple spots, probably three different spots. That gives him his ability to really understand things, gives him a little more opportunity than maybe some other young guys.”

Barnes could be a major contributor in this secondary sooner rather than later, with a diverse skillset that can place him all over the field.

Nine players and two coaches named to College Sports Wire’s preseason All-ACC team

Clemson is all over this preseason All-ACC team.

The 2023 college football season is inching closer, and we could not be more excited for what this season has in store for Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football program.

As we approach the season, media outlets have released preseason rankings, polls, All-American teams, and more in anticipation of the season. The latest to do so was College Sports Wire, who released their preseason All-ACC team for the upcoming season.

College Sports Wire’s regional editor Patrick Conn had nine players and two coaches make the cut, the most of any program in the conference. Here is a look at each player who made the team and what Conn had to say about them.

PFF names 16 Tigers to their 2023 Preseason All-ACC Team

A total of 16 Tigers were named to PFF’s 2023 Preseason All-ACC Team.

Heading into the 2023 college football season, the Clemson football program will battle to remain the top dogs in the ACC with Mike Norvell and the Florida State Seminoles.

The ACC will be strong next season, but at the top of the conference should be the Tigers and the Seminoles. Two programs with a ton of talent and much to prove in 2023.

The amount of talent these two programs have is prevalent in Pro Football Focus’ 2023 Preseason All-ACC Team, where Clemson and FSU had the most players make the team. However, it was the Tigers who had the most members, with 16 names making the cut.

Here is a look at every Tiger who made PFF’s 2023 Preseason All-ACC team.

Phillips on defensive dominance in win over Miami: ‘That’s what we do’

Senior safety Jalyn Phillips had one of the best games of his career in the win over Miami. The highlight of the game for Phillips came in the second quarter when safety R.J. Mickens deflected a pass from Miami quarterback Jacurri Brown. The deflection by Mickens set up an interception for Phillips, who has been a consistent part of Clemson’s secondary all season.

The Georgia native, who is one of the most experienced players in Clemson’s secondary, spoke to the media after Saturday’s 40-10 win over Miami and shared that the defense has made a mindset shift since the loss to Notre Dame.

In the last two games, the defense has come out with some of the most physical performances of the season, and Phillips believes that it has never been the talent or the skill set holding the defense back this season, but the mindset.

However, he affirmed that he believes the Tigers have the right mindset again and are dialed in with a sense of purpose for what they have to accomplish out on the field.

“We didn’t come out with the right mindset for that game,” he said. “Last game and this game we came out with the right mindset. It’s all about mindset, when you play defense that’s all it is, being physical and having that great mindset when you go out there on the field.”

This mindset referenced by the safety has also been emphasized by defensive coordinator Wesley Goodwin. Goodwin has expressed that since the loss to Notre Dame, he has been pushing the defense to play with a heightened level of physicality. Phillips shared that playing a physical style of defense has always been a part of this group’s identity.

“That’s what we do,” he said. “That’s been our defense since we started in camp. We want to attack folks.”

The physicality and the mindset of this defense will be critical when it comes to the next test against South Carolina. The historically contentious rivalry between the Tigers and the Gamecocks will be the final home game of the season.

Phillips shared that the Clemson defense will be preparing with purpose to be able to defeat the Gamecocks at home next Saturday.

“South Carolina, that’s a game of its own, a season of its own, rivalry of its own,” he said. “It’s one of the biggest rivalries in the country, so we’re definitely going to prepare with purpose for them, but my mindset is that it’s just another game. They are in our way of what we’re trying to accomplish, so always have that windshield mentality and focus on what’s next.”

Orhorhoro on linebackers’ performance: ‘It means I’m doing something right’

Clemson defender Ruke Orhorhoro is doing all he can to help his team produce defensive success, even if it’s at the expense of his own stats. In the Tigers’ latest ACC win over Louisville, Wes Goodwin’s defense saw much-needed success after what was …

Clemson defender Ruke Orhorhoro is doing all he can to help his team produce defensive success, even if it’s at the expense of his own stats.

In the Tigers’ latest ACC win over Louisville, Wes Goodwin’s defense saw much-needed success after what was a disappointingly lackluster performance the week prior at Notre Dame.

With a pair of big performances for both Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Barrett Carter out of the linebacker corps, Orhorhoro was more than happy to play a small part up front in their second-level success despite only picking up two tackles and a half tackle for loss of his own in the 31-16 win.

“It means I’m doing something right,” Orhorhoro said. “If I take up two, that means somebody’s coming free. I’ll take up two all day if my teammates get to eat behind me and just do what’s best for the team. It gives me a little satisfaction. When the play is there, I make it, but other than that, my linebackers do a great job with just flowing behind us, playing off of us and making us right.”

From the get-go, the defensive tackle knew it was going to be a big game for not just the linebacker pair, but the entire defense.

“Barrett hit a guy, I don’t know what play it was, but he just hit him, and it was loud, so I was like, ‘All right, this is going to be one of those games,’ and it was just hard hits across the board,” the veteran said. “JP [Jalyn Phillips] was hitting people left and right, Trotter hit the quarterback really hard, and I knew they were going to put together a good game. Barrett went crazy; after I saw him hurdle that guy, I didn’t even know what to say.”

Now with another ACC challenge in Miami on the horizon, Orhorhoro wants to keep the same mindset that led to their defensive success over the Cardinals — a mindset centered around playing free and having fun.

“It was fun just shifting the mindset,” Orhorhoro said. “We wanted to go out there and dominate and just play to the best of our abilities. We set a goal as a defense just to start playing free and not worrying about anything, but just let everything fall where it falls and that’s what we did. We went out there and played free, everybody played free, and it turned out pretty good, so hope we’re going to keep doing that these next couple of games.”

Know your foe, Clemson: Which Tigers could give Notre Dame problems

The Irish are going to need to play their A game to defeat Clemson

One of the most talented teams in the country will be visiting South Bend this weekend in Clemson. Although as a team, they might be “underperforming,” they still enter this contest a perfect 8-0 and with a No. 4 ranking in the initial College Football Playoff top 25. There is loads of individual talent the Tigers possess, so I’ll exclude talking about quarterback DJ Uiagalelei and running back Will Shipley. There are other’s that could make Notre Dame’s evening long and here are five of them that could do exactly that.
