Daniel Cormier: Bobby Green’s KO loss to Jalin Turner was ‘the worst stoppage in UFC history’

Daniel Cormier was not happy with the stoppage in the Jalin Turner vs. Bobby Green fight at UFC on ESPN 52 in Austin.

[autotag]Daniel Cormier[/autotag], like many, was not happy with the stoppage in the [autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] fight.

Saturday in the UFC on ESPN 52 co-main event, Green was viciously knocked out by Turner. Although Turner’s initial shots were damaging, it was the subsequent ground-and-pound that referee Kerry Hatley let continue that had people up in arms.

Turner badly hurt Green with a right hand, then dropped him to the canvas with a two-punch combination. Turner then jumped on top of Green and connected with more than a dozen unanswered shots. Cormier called it the worst stoppage in UFC history.

“Guys, I have said time and time again: When someone falls face down, there’s no need (for a standing 8-count) in boxing, and there is no need for follow-up shots (in MMA),” Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “For some reason, the referee just doesn’t want to stop the fight. Bobby is laying flat on his belly, getting just hit over and over and over until eventually the referee mercifully stops the fight. I thought it was the worst stoppage in UFC history.”

Cormier, who was commentating the event alongside Michael Bisping and Brendan Fitzgerald, said it wasn’t only the commentators protesting about the lack of stoppage in real time. He also says the people in Moody Arena in Austin, Texas, also were concerned.

“The concern on everyone’s face octagon side was crazy,” Cormier said. “I saw a girl next to the octagon turn away. She turned away. Not a little girl – she’s a teenager, 19 or 20 – she turns away because she can’t watch what’s going on in the octagon. … He made a bad mistake. It was terrible. There was no reason for a guy to take that amount of damage after the fight was over. It was very clear that the fight was over.”

Jalin Turner all smiles after UFC on ESPN 52 win over Bobby Green, though victory bittersweet

Jalin Turner was all smiles after his UFC on ESPN 52 win, but admitted fighting Bobby Green was bittersweet.

AUSTIN, Texas – [autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag] grew up in the same area of California as [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag], which is what made the lead-up to his win Saturday a bit more challenging.

In the UFC on ESPN 52 co-main event at Moody Center, Turner (14-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) brutalized Green (31-15-1 MMA, 12-10-1 UFC) through an elongated (and controversial) sequence until referee Kerry Hatley stepped in and stopped the fight. It’s all business, at the end of the day.

“At the end of the day, it’s bittersweet because me and Bobby come from the same area,” Turner told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a post-fight news conference. “We grew up in the same area and that’s what made it tough. But at the end of the day, it’s also business and you’ve got to see the business opportunities.

“I’m a businessman, an independent contractor, so I’ve got to go handle business when it’s attended to me. They put me in the position because they knew I’ve got the name now. I’ve got a little hype. I always go and put on a show. I’m a businessman. I handle what I have to do for the promotion. Look what happened.”

Green was wobbly as he eventually rose to his feet and shook hands with Turner. He attended the official decision reading but has yet to comment about the defeat or his status post-fight.

From what Turner gathered, Green was OK – all things considered.

“The ref, he just didn’t see. … I don’t know, bro. I don’t know what to call it,” Turner said. “He just waited until Bobby was out. Bobby is tough. Bobby is a really tough fighter. When I was punching him, he was defending them, and he was moving. He was still a bit coherent. I was like, ‘Dang.’ I was like, ‘Maybe this should be stopped. Maybe not.’ I’m not going to stop until you pull me off because it’s him or me. If he had gotten his bearings about him, he could’ve gotten back on top or something crazy. It is what it is. He was healthy. He was good. He was coherent afterward. We had good words, so I was happy he was in decent health. So it is what it is.”

Turner, 28, snapped a two-fight losing skid with the fight which he took on nine days’ notice. As for what’s next, Turner isn’t sure.

“I’m trying to contain myself because I want to do a backflip right now because I’m so hyped,” Turner said. “My son’s birthday is at the end of this month, so that was a big win for me. I want to throw him a nice party and close out the year properly and just focus on 2024.”

Turner got a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus for his finish, so his son’s birthday bash might go to the next level.

Green posted on social media after the loss and congratulated Turner for the win and thanked him for taking the fight on short notice.

Dana White: Jalin Turner vs. Bobby Green stoppage at UFC on ESPN 52 ‘one of the worst I’ve ever seen’

Dana White says referee Kerry Hatley regrets his “very bad” stoppage in Jalin Turner vs. Bobby Green at UFC Austin.

AUSTIN, Texas – [autotag]Dana White[/autotag] says referee Kerry Hatley regrets his “very bad” stoppage in [autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 52.

The MMA community was infuriated after Hatley allowed Green (31-15-1 MMA, 12-10-1 UFC) to take a prolonged string of additional shots after he was knocked down by Turner (14-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) in the opening round of the lightweight co-headliner at Moody Center.

UFC CEO White could only agree, but said unlike past referees he’s taken serious issues with, Hatley expressed remorse for his inaction post-fight.

“(It was) one of the worst I’ve ever seen,” White told MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight at UFC on ESPN 52. “The difference is we’ve had some refs say some dumb sh*t in the past, like, ‘I allowed her to be a warrior tonight,’ and goofy sh*t like that. He knows he made a mistake tonight and does not feel not feel good about it, so it’s unfortunate.”

Fortunately, Green managed to leave the octagon under his power, but he was clearly rattled from the force of the knockout and extra shots. No one said it was a rightful way for the bout to end, and White could only agree.

“Definitely a bad stoppage,” White said. “Very bad.”

MMA community rages at referee Kerry Hatley for ‘one of the worst stoppages in history’ at UFC on ESPN 52

Referee Kerry Hatley was the subject of significant criticism after he let Bobby Green take excessive unneeded damage from Jalin Turner at UFC Austin.

Referee Kerry Hatley was the subject of significant criticism after he let [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] take excessive and unnecessary damage from [autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 52.

After Turner (14-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) dropped Green (31-15-1 MMA, 12-10-1 UFC) in the first round of the lightweight co-headliner at Moody Center in Austin, Texas, the fight was essentially over. He landed some routine follow-up shots to seal the deal, and in almost every scenario, the referee would’ve jumped in there.

Not this time.

Hatley allowed Turner to pound on Green’s limp body repeatedly for several seconds before he finally woke up and stepped in (thankfully Green got up under his own power), and moments later, the social media world exploded.

Fighters, media, fans and more lashed out at Hatley, and you can see the top reactions below.

UFC on ESPN 52 results: Referee permits Jalin Turner to bludgeon Bobby Green in elongated stoppage

What many are calling one of the worst stoppages in UFC history took place Saturday during Jalin Turner vs. Bobby Green in Austin, Texas.

An impressive early stoppage by [autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag] in the UFC on ESPN 52 co-main event may have been overshadowed by the lack of stoppage by the presiding referee.

The controversially late stoppage Saturday from referee Kerry Hatley came at 2:49 of Round 1 at Moody Center in Austin, Texas.

Turner (14-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) initially wobbled Green (31-15-1 MMA, 12-10-1 UFC) with an overhand right. He repeated the strike and dropped Green, who turned belly down. Turner landed 19 consecutive, unanswered punches before the referee stopped it. Green was visibly unconscious by the 17th strike, but two more hard ones finally triggered the referee’s reaction.

The stoppage was viewed as egregious by many in the MMA community, including the commentary team of Brendan Fitzgerald, Daniel Cormier, and Michael Bisping.

Eventually, Green rose to his feet under his own power, though still visibly staggered by the damage absorbed.

Turner, 28, took the fight on less than two weeks’ notice and snapped a two-fight skid as a result of his victory. Green, 37, was originally scheduled to face Dan Hooker in a five-round fight. He has a two-fight winning streak snapped as a result of the loss.
