Jalin Hyatt believes the Giants will be a playoff team in 2024

A confident Jalin Hyatt believes the New York Giants have what it takes to be a playoff team in 2024.

When the New York Giants selected wide receiver Jalin Hyatt in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft, the team was fresh off of their first playoff appearance in quite some time, and hoping to build off that success.

Unfortunately, despite a better roster on paper, Big Blue regressed in 2023.

However, even with an underwhelming rookie campaign — both individually and for the team — Hyatt believes the Giants have a playoff contender heading into the 2024 season.

“Always, man, always. New year, new opportunities, new goals. You know, for me, I always set high expectations. Just looking at our team, looking at what we got, we have a good chance to do whatever we want to do,” Hyatt told reporters on Thursday.

“For goals, I just want as a team goal. We have a playoff team and that’s what we want to do and that’s our focus. We’re going to get there.”

While it may seem crazy following the disappointing 2023 campaign, it wasn’t long ago that the Giants were in the playoffs defeating the 13-win Minnesota Vikings on the road.

The wide receiver room got a major upgrade in the offseason when the Giants selected Malik Nabers sixth overall. While the addition of Nabers may take away targets from Hyatt, it may also help open up other opportunities for the second-year speedster and others.

Giants’ Brian Daboll praises Jalin Hyatt’s ‘tremendous improvement’

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll says WR Jalin Hyatt has made “tremendous improvement” from Year 1 to Year 2.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said on Thursday that second-year wide receiver Jalin Hyatt has shown marked improvement from his disappointing rookie season.

Speaking to the media at the team’s ninth of 10 scheduled OTAs, Daboll said he was “pleased with where Hyatt was at,” coming into this year’s offseason program.

The Giants traded up in the third round in last year’s NFL draft to select Hyatt, a speedy wideout from Tennessee who once scored five touchdowns in a game versus Alabama.

Much was expected from Hyatt right out of the gate as he was clocked at 24 MPH in camp last summer, a record high among NFL players.

Quarterback issues and inconsistency limited his production in just seven starts. He caught 23 of 40 targets for 373 yards in 2023 but had no touchdowns playing on 50.45 percent of the offensive snaps.

The Giants hope to exploit defenses on the outside with Hyatt’s speed on one wing and rookie Malik Nabers on the other with Wan’Dale Robinson in the slot. Hyatt is also expected to line up in the slot in some formations.

See it: Giants’ Jalin Hyatt snags one-handed touchdown in OTAs

New York Giants WR Jalin Hyatt dazzled in OTAs on Friday, hauling in a ridiculous one-handed touchdown catch from QB Tommy DeVito.

New York Giants sophomore receiver, Jalin Hyatt, made a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch during the team’s organized team activities (OTAs) practice on Friday.

It was very Odell Beckham Jr.-esque and immediately went viral on social media.

Check it out:

Hyatt reminded Giants fans of a former Giants receiver wearing No. 13 with his eye-catching one-handed grab. Both Hyatt and Beckham Jr. were star college receivers in the SEC (with Hyatt finishing his last season in college with 1,769 yards and 15 touchdowns).

New York is hoping that Hyatt can also be like Beckham Jr. when it comes to NFL success as the latter is the best receiver in recent memory for Big Blue.

As a rookie, Hyatt had a modest season recording 23 catches for 373 yards. He will surely look to build upon this in Year 2.

The Tennessee product will have a great opportunity to do so as Malik Nabers will be taking the attention away from a lot of defenses leaving Hyatt with the opportunity to take the top off defenses.

Giants don’t fare well in 2023 NFL draft re-grade

In a 2023 NFL draft re-grade courtesy of The Athletic, the New York Giants did not fare particularly well but hope remains.

The jury is still out on the 2023 NFL draft class but Diante Lee of The Athletic recently decided to grade the class after just one season.

The New York Giants had seven picks in the draft leading off with Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks at No. 24 overall. He started 15 games and was solid most of the season. He is now considered a No. 1 outside corner, so they appear to have made a good choice in him.

Banks was not likely the Giants’ first choice on their board, however. They were said to be in the market for a wide receiver and it just so happens that four studs were chosen right before they were on the clock in Jaxson Smith-Njigba, Quentin Johnson, May Flowers, and Jordan Addison.

The rest of the draft is still very much a mystery as injuries and underuse left much to be desired.

New York Giants: C-minus

Deonte Banks (No. 24) was a fun watch coming out of college and as a rookie showed the speed, physicality and competitive edge that made him a late riser in the draft process. Jalin Hyatt (No. 73) flashed some downfield ball-tracking skills, but he didn’t separate enough last season to be considered a long-term piece of this offense.

This year, the Giants hope to see some growth in center John Michael Schmitz, cornerback Tre Hawkins III, safety Gervarrius Owens, and defensive lineman Jordon Riley.

Eric Gray is expected to help fill the void left by Saquon Barkley and Hyatt still has to earn the trust of the coaches and quarterbacks.

CBS Sports ranks Giants’ 2023 rookie class in bottom half of NFL

The New York Giants’ 2023 NFL draft class was ranked in the bottom half of the league by CBS Sports, but they were credited with two hits.

The New York Giants made seven picks in the 2023 NFL draft and most felt confident that general manager Joe Schoen had made the right calls.

In need of talent at multiple positions, the Giants fared well with their limited stock, adding cornerback Deonte Banks, center John Michael Schmitz, and wide receiver Jalin Hyatt with their first three selections.

They rounded things out with running back Eric Gray, cornerback Tre Hawkins III, defensive lineman Jordon Riley, and safety Gervarrius Owens.

All seven of those players saw time on the field this past season but the results weren’t quite what the Giants had hoped. Injuries derailed the development of several rookies while others were stunted due to misuse (see: Gray as a punt returner).

Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports recently ranked all 32 draft classes from 2023 and the Giants landed in the bottom half of the league. However, he did credit them with two hits: Banks and Hyatt.

Hyatt didn’t exactly rekindle all of the magic he had at Tennessee winning down the field on a regular basis. But averaging over 16 yards per snag as a rookie demonstrated there’s a bright future for him if the development as a route runner continues. Sixth-round pick Tre Hawkins was respectable as a rotational cornerback. Second-round pick John Michael Schmitz really struggled with power before his injury. Banks had some hiccups in coverage but mostly dealt with No. 1 receivers in man coverage and snagged two picks while knocking away 11 passes.

Banks has the makings of a solid, long-term CB1 and although he struggled at times, Schmitz still has plenty of upside. Hyatt also performed better than his stats would indicate. He suffered due to poor offensive line and quarterback play.

The Giants remain hopeful that Hawkins can develop into a starter and that Riley eventually becomes a dominant interior defender.

Giants’ Jalin Hyatt wants to contribute more in 2024

New York Giants rookie WR Jalin Hyatt feels like he left too many plays on the field this season and wants to contribute more in 2024.

New York Giants rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt opened eyes this past summer at training camp with his speed. He was clocked at 24 miles per hour, the fastest time ever registered since the league began measuring players’ running speed.

The Giants felt they had something special in Hyatt all along, having traded up in the third round to select him last spring and he was about to pay some lofty dividends.

But speed isn’t everything in football and Hyatt and the Giants would soon learn that. Although Hyatt was on the field for 50 percent of the offensive snaps, his receiving numbers did not match his blazing speed and promise.

Hyatt caught just 23 of 40 targets for 373 yards with no touchdowns. He did lead the team in average yards per reception, however (16.2), showing off a little bit of his big play potential, but overall his season was not what the team had hoped.

As the Giants packed up their gear after the season, Hyatt seemed to know that more was expected of him this season.

“I just want to keep getting better and keep grinding,” Hyatt said, via Sports Illustrated. “Stay off my feet a little bit at the beginning of this offseason but right back to the grind after that. I can’t wait.”

It appeared the jump from the college ranks at Tennessee to the NFL was a larger chasm than Hyatt had expected. Perhaps the Giants felt he was too green to rely on, throwing the ball to more experienced receivers such as Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson, Darren Waller and Saquon Barkley.

Hyatt did learn a few things in his rookie season, and plans on building on that knowledge.

“A lot more confident, and that just goes by experiencing games,” Hyatt said. “I feel like I know, fully this playbook and fully what I’ve got to do. At the beginning, I didn’t really know, starting off. Keep getting better. That’s the mindset I have for myself. I have high expectations, and it starts with the work in the offseason. That starts now.

“I definitely want to contribute more, that’s for sure. I felt like I did alright this year, but I left some plays out there that I wish I had back. I think the expectations for next year for myself are to be better and get better, be more consistent, get open more, and make more plays when they come to me. That’s my expectation.”

The Giants undoubtedly share similar expectations.

Grading every rookie from Giants’ 2023 draft class

How did the New York Giants’ draft class fare in 2023? Giants Wire hands out grades for all seven rookies.

Now that the 2023 NFL regular season is in the books, it’s time to review how the New York Giants draft class performed.

The Giants had seven selections in last spring’s NFL draft, four on defense and three on offense.

Here’s how they fared in their debut seasons.

He played wide receiver at Tennessee from 2020-22, recording 108 receptions, 1,769 receiving yards, 19 receiving touchdowns and averaged 16.4 yards per reception.

Hyatt became the first player in program history to win the Biletnikoff Award. He was a 2022 consensus first-team All-American and a first-team All-SEC selection.

Hyatt holds single-game records for touchdown receptions and points scored after his five-touchdown performance against Alabama in 2022.

Stock up, down after Giants’ 27-10 win over Eagles

Whose stock is up and whose is down following the New York Giants’ 27-10 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 18?

The New York Giants ended their dismal 2023 season on a high note, demolishing the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-10, at MetLife Stadium in Week 18.

The final score wasn’t indicative of just how dominant the Giants were on Sunday as they caused the Eagles to quit at halftime and pull their starters. It was Big Blue’s biggest win over their NFC East rivals since 2012.

With the win, the Giants end the season with a record of 6-11 and will select sixth overall in the 2024 NFL draft.

Whose stock is up and whose is down after the Week 18 win? Let’s take a look.

Giants snap the curse, dominate Eagles to close out 2023 season

The New York Giants wrapped up their 2023 season with a 27-10 thumping of the Philadelphia Eagles, finally ending an ugly string of losses.

The New York Giants hosted the defending NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon in their 2023 regular season finale.

MetLife was rife with Eagles fans and empty seats. Philly came into the game with a chance to win the NFC East. The Giants were simply there to play the role of spoiler.

Veteran wide receiver Sterling Shepard, possibly playing his last game for the Giants, represented the team as one of the game-day captains at midfield before the game.

Here is how things played out…
