Lakers’ Jalen Hood-Schifino among those on hand at Adidas All-American Camp

Hood-Schifino was among those on hand at the Adidas All-American Camp watching the top high school prospects in the country.

Los Angeles Lakers rookie Jalen Hood-Schifino was among those watching the top high school prospects in the country at the Adidas All-American Camp on Wednesday.

The event included several players ranked in the top 100 in 2024, such as Annor Boateng (No. 38, uncommitted), VJ Edgecombe (21, uncommitted), Ian Jackson (5, North Carolina), Khani Rooths (23, uncommitted) and Kur Teng (48, Michigan State) among others.

With a star-studded competition taking place, at least 10 NBA teams were in attendance scouting the players, according to Krysten Peek of Yahoo Sports. Jackson, as the fifth-ranked recruit, was certainly the top draw of the evening.

Hood-Schifino pulled up to the event as the latest athlete to sign with Adidas. He, along with Gradey Dick, recently signed endorsement contracts with the Three Stripes, the first two rookies this year to join the company. They previously represented Adidas in college.

The 20-year-old Hood-Schifino posted averages of 13.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals in six summer league games with the Lakers. The 17th pick scored at least 15 points four times, including a summer league-high 20 points on July 5.

Lakers summer player goals: Jalen Hood-Schifino

Here are three goals for the Lakers’ Jalen Hood-Schifino this summer.

Training camp for the 2023-24 NBA season is slowly but surely approaching, and while there is plenty of time before it begins, it’s time for players to start ramping up their training and preparation.

That’s especially true for the Los Angeles Lakers, who are hoping to win their 18th world championship next summer. They magically remade what was a broken roster in January and February, and they’re aiming for the sky rather than just trying to tread water.

The Lakers made Jalen Hood-Schifino the No. 17 pick in the draft just over a month ago. While some fans wish the team had taken someone else, the Indiana University guard has the potential to become a good player at the next level.

Here are three goals for him this summer.

2023 Lakers summer league player grades: Jalen Hood-Schifino

A final look at Jalen Hood-Schifino’s performance during NBA Summer League play for the Lakers this year.

The 2023 NBA Summer League is in the books, and it gave a number of players the opportunity to flash their potential and possibly earn a spot in the Association.

The Lakers had a mix of can’t-miss players, prospects looking to get playing time with Los Angeles and those fighting for a spot somewhere in the league.

Jalen Hood-Schifino was taken with the No. 17 pick in June’s draft, and everyone was eager to get a first glimpse during summer league play. While he’s far from a finished product, he showed he clearly has promise.

Jalen Hood-Schifino has a sneaker deal with Adidas

Jalen Hood-Schifino, the No. 17 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft by the Lakers, has landed a sneaker contract with Adidas.

When the Los Angeles Lakers selected Indiana University’s Jalen Hood-Schifino with the 17th pick in last month’s NBA draft, the response was mixed.

While some wondered about the wisdom of picking someone who has struggled with his outside shot and isn’t particularly speedy or athletic, others lauded his mid-range scoring ability, passing skills and overall character.

While Hood-Schifino showed flashes of promise during NBA Summer League play, overall he struggled. In four games in Las Vegas, Nev. he averaged 11.8 points and 3 assists, but he shot only 31% from the field and 46.2% from the free-throw line.

But it didn’t prevent him from accomplishing something big off the court. On Monday, Adidas announced it had inked Hood-Schifino to a sneaker deal by welcoming him to its family.

He may end up being a work-in-progress that takes a few years to become a good player, but his potential is evident, and it has been enough to get the attention of many Lakers fans.

Gradey Dick, Jalen Hood-Schifino sign endorsement deals with Adidas

Dick and Hood-Schifino on Monday signed footwear and apparel endorsement contracts with Adidas.

Toronto Raptors forward Gradey Dick and Los Angeles Lakers guard Jalen Hood-Schifino on Monday signed footwear and apparel endorsement deals with Adidas, the apparel company announced.

Dick and Hood-Schifino are the first two players from the 2023 NBA draft class to sign with the company. They join a talented roster of players, which includes James Harden, Candace Parker, Damian Lillard, Alysha Clark, Jalen Green and Kahleah Copper among others.

They were previously signed to the Three Stripes as part of their first class of NIL athletes in December 2022 in the NCAA. The two are expected to star in Adidas’ campaign creative for the third installment of their premium lifestyle line.

Dick, the 13th pick, debuted with the Raptors in the NBA Summer League, averaging 16 points, six rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals on 40% shooting from the field in four games. He scored in double figures in each game and produced two 20-point games.

Hood-Schifino posted averages of 13.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals in six games between the California Classic and Las Vegas. The 17th pick scored at least 15 points four times, including a summer league-high 20 points on July 5.

Jalen-Hood Schifino and Max Christie won’t play for summer Lakers on Sunday

The Lakers will be without arguably their two best players when they close out the NBA Summer League on Sunday versus the Grizzlies.

The Los Angeles Lakers will play their final game of the 2023 NBA Summer League on Sunday when they face the Los Angeles Clippers in Las Vegas.

They looked good in the first two contests of summer league play, defeating the Golden State Warriors and Charlotte Hornets. But they have lost both of their last two contests, falling to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday and the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday.

Two of the Lakers’ most intriguing players this summer have been guards Jalen Hood-Schifino and Max Christie. Unfortunately, neither will play on Sunday due to a right groin strain and a right hip strain, respectively.

Their absences will give Damion Baugh and Maxwell Lewis a chance to flash their potential while playing more minutes.

Three takeaways from Friday’s Lakers vs. Grizzlies summer league game

Three takeaways from the Lakers’ next-to-last NBA Summer League game of 2023.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ stint in the 2023 NBA Summer League took a turn for the worse after they lost on Friday in blowout fashion to the Memphis Grizzlies, 100-69.

This game was never competitive at all. Memphis scored the first 13 points of the game, and Los Angeles didn’t get on the board until big man Colin Castleton hit a free throw with 4:27 left in the first quarter. The Lakers would have to wait until the 3:30 mark of the first period before Jalen Hood-Schifino converted their first field goal of the contest.

A big reason the Lakers were never in this contest was the absence of Max Christie, who sat out with a right hip strain. He has been their unquestioned star of the summer.

As a result of this loss, they will play one final “consolation” game on Sunday versus the Los Angeles Clippers since they do not qualify for the summer league tournament.

Three takeaways from Wednesday’s Lakers vs. Celtics summer league game

Even though the Lakers lost to the Celtics on Wednesday, there were some reasons to be hopeful about their young prospects.

It always hurts fans in the Southland when the Los Angeles Lakers lose to the Boston Celtics, even when it happens during a summer league game.

That is what happened on Wednesday, when the Lakers lost to their arch-rivals in Las Vegas, 95-90, snapping their budding streak of two wins in a row.

Los Angeles appeared in control early, taking a 28-19 lead after one quarter and a 53-43 advantage at halftime. But after leading by as many as 14 points, the Lakers lost control as the Celtics attacked the paint, especially in transition, and pounded the boards.

Three things, in particular, stood out for the Lakers, and not all of them were good things.

Watch: Blake Wesley throws down vicious dunk in NBA Summer League

You gotta check this out.

Injuries limited former Notre Dame guard Blake Wesley to 37 games in his rookie season with the San Antonio Spurs. Now with his second NBA season upcoming, it only made sense for him to play in this year’s Summer League. He’s eager to prove that he’s part of the Spurs’ future alongside rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama. At the very least, he’s capable of thunderous plays like this one in the Spurs’ second Summer League game against the Los Angeles Lakers:

The way he blows past Jalen Hood-Schifino and then leaps over Max Christie for the dunk is worthy of watching over and over again. That he did this against guys who definitely will play in the NBA this season is a promising look for him. As long as he stays healthy, he should give Gregg Popovich reason to give him many minutes. After that, it will be up to him to justify that decision assuming it’s made.

Four takeaways from Wednesday’s Lakers vs. Spurs summer league game

The Lakers had four players do well in their second summer league game of 2023.

In their second game of this year’s California Classic, the Los Angeles Lakers fought hard for much of the contest, but they came up short to the San Antonio Spurs by the score of 109-99.

The Lakers fell behind early 20-10, but they responded to build a five-point lead near the end of the first quarter. Unfortunately, that was about as good as it got for them, as they got outrebounded by 15 and gave up 20 offensive rebounds, which led to 26 second-chance points for San Antonio.

Still, four players stood out for Los Angeles and could have some potential as far as making its big-league team this fall.
