Top targets for new Texas wide receivers coach Brennan Marion

The class of 2023 features some elite talent at wide receiver.

Steve Sarkisian got his top choice for Texas’ new wide receivers coach in Brennan Marion.

Marion is widely regarded as one of the better up-and-coming coaches in college football. He was instrumental in the development of 2021 Biltnikof winner Jordan Addison at Pitt and was being courted for a few Power Five offensive coordinator jobs.

A big reason Sarkisian brought in Marion from Pittsburgh was to improve recruiting efforts at the wide receiver position.

Texas missed out on many top wideout targets like Evan Stewart, Armani Winfield, CJ Williams and a few others. The Horns did land four-star speedster Brenen Thompson but wanted to see more dominos fall their way.

Texas will have many selling points to high school pass catchers. The success of Xavier Worthy, the addition of Brennan Marion and the opportunity for early playing time, just to name a few.

The good news for Marion is the 2023 recruiting class is absolutely stacked with elite wide receiver talent.

Here is a list of some of the top-rated 2023 wide receivers Texas has made priority targets:

Texas among the top schools for five-star WR Jalen Hale

Five-star wide receiver Jalen Hale announced his top schools on Sunday.

It has been a while since Texas has received some good news on the recruiting trail, but they did receive a nugget to be positive about on Sunday.

Five-star wide receiver Jalen Hale, who 247Sports’ composite has ranked as a top-35 player in the class of 2023, announced his top schools via Twitter. The Longhorns are in dire need of receiver talent to compliment freshman superstar Xavier Worthy, and to eventually replace him after he inevitably heads to the NFL.

Hale seems to be interested in a variety of schools, including powerhouses such as Alabama, LSU, USC and Georgia.

As it currently stands, Texas has just one player in their 2023 class. The staff is doing their best to wrap up the class of 2022 along with seeking talented transfers from the portal in order to bolster the roster to redeem themselves after a dreadful 5-7 season.

Hale’s recruitment seems to be wide open, as he was once crystal balled to Oklahoma, but after the Lincoln Riley move it seems to have opened up, allowing for Texas to make a great impression while the Sooners recover and find a coach.

Five-star wide receiver Jalen Hale has LSU in the mix

Five-star WR from Longview has LSU in the mix.

Some good news to report on the recruiting front. Five-star wide receiver Jalen Hale from Longview, Texas, has released his top 12 schools. Hale has the LSU Tigers along with Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M of the SEC among his top schools. Future SEC team Texas was also mentioned to be in contention.

Prior to Lincoln Riley’s departure to USC, Hale was believed to be a lock to head to Oklahoma. The Sooners have been replaced by the Trojans on his list. What could be the turning point for Hale to the Bayou likely depends on who Brian Kelly names as the offensive coordinator.

Hale would be a major get for the Tigers if they are able to secure his commitment. Likely putting him as one of the next LSU WRs to become a household name. To do so, they might have a fight on their hands.

The next group of 2023 offensive recruits who could be on the radar

A look at three prominent playmakers on offense that Lincoln Riley and the Oklahoma Sooners could get to commit next.

Lincoln Riley and the Oklahoma Sooners have been on an absolute tear in the 2023 recruiting class of late. It started with the commitment of four-star athlete Treyaun Webb.

While listed as an athlete, Webb is viewed as a dual threat at running back. Webb can be used as a runner or can catch the ball out of the backfield.

That commitment was followed by five-star quarterback Malachi Nelson’s. He becomes the third five-star commitment for Riley at the position. The previous two were Spencer Rattler and Caleb Williams. Nelson completes the trifecta. With the quarterback of the class locked up, the offensive players around him should follow. More on that in a moment.

On Friday, the Sooners added four-star tight end Luke Hasz to the mix. The Oklahoma native is listed as the No. 2 tight end in the country. While some teams don’t have the luxury of top-tier tight ends, Riley’s offense uses them as an advantage. Hasz and Webb give the Sooners a nice trio along with Nelson at quarterback. OU wasn’t done.

On Saturday, the Sooners received their fourth pledge of the class, five-star athlete Makai Lemon. While listed as an athlete, Lemon is going to play wide receiver for the Sooners. He is already catching passes from Nelson; they are teammates at Los Alamitos. Lemon adds another five-star pass catcher to an already loaded offense in Norman.

Sooners Wire looks at three more offensive weapons who could be next to pledge to the Crimson and Cream. One of those players is expected to be catching passes from Malachi Nelson the next two seasons.
