Houston Texans WR Jalen Camp honors John Metchie after preseason touchdown

Texans’ receiver strikes the Crimson Crane in support of John Metchie

Former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver, John Metchie III, was selected in the second round, No. 44 overall, in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. It was the perfect landing spot as Metchie would see valuable minutes as a rookie until he received some of the most devastating news of the offseason.

In July, Metchie announced he had been diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia and would be missing the entirety of his rookie campaign. Although, this is much bigger than football.

This past Saturday, the Texans played their first preseason game of the year officially kicking off their 2022 campaign. Texans’ second-year receiver, Jalen Camp, made the gesture of the season by honoring Metchie after scoring a touchdown by striking Metchie’s famous Crimson Crane kick pose.

We hope for Metchie’s speedy recovery & Roll Tide.

Texans WR Jalen Camp honors John Metchie III after touchdown

Jalen Camp of the Texans honors ill teammate John Metchie III

It was just another preseason touchdown until Jalen Camp decided to celebrate teammate John Metchie III.

The Houston Texans’ Camp caught a 4-yard pass from Jeff Driskel in the third quarter Saturday against the New Orleans Saints.

After picking up the 6 points, Camp struck a pose much the way Metchie would after a big play when he was at Alabama.

The thought behind the gesture is that Metchie was diagnosed with a form of leukemia in July.

“Recently I was diagnosed with APL (Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia), the most curable form of Leukemia,” Metchie said in a statement released by the Texans.

“I am currently receiving great medical care, am in good spirits and I expect to make a recovery at a later point in time. As a result of this diagnosis, I will likely not be playing football this season. My main focus will be on my health and recovery. Thank you in advance for your support and well-wishes. I cannot wait to come back stronger than ever. God bless.”

Wonderful job by Camp to honor his teammate with such a simple but moving gesture.

The teams also got together and prayed for Metchie.

WATCH: Texans QB Jeff Driskel throws 4-yard touchdown pass to WR Jalen Camp

Houston Texans wideout Jalen Camp caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Driskel in the second quarter against the New Orleans Saints in preseason.

Plays like this will help Jalen Camp make his case.

With 11:54 to go in the second quarter, Houston Texans quarterback Jeff Driskel threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Camp to cap off a five-play, 47-yard drive that was setup by a New Orleans Saints turnover. With Ka’imi Fairbairn’s extra point, the Texans took a 10-7 lead at NRG Stadium.

The Texans had opportunities for their reserve wideouts to showcase their talents against the Saints. Starter Brandin Cooks did not play as some of the first-team offense was shelved against New Orleans.

Texans release WR Taywan Taylor, add WR Jalen Camp, CB Antonio Phillips

The Houston Texans reached an injury settlement with WR Taywan Taylor and added CB Antonio Phillips and WR Jalen Camp to the practice squad.

The Houston Texans are continuing to tinker with the bottom of their roster as they get ready for Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday, Sept. 12 at NRG Stadium.

The Texans reached an injury settlement with receiver Taywan Taylor on Friday. The former Tennessee Titans 2017 third-round pick was released from the injured reserve and is now a free agent.

Houston also added two players to the practice squad: cornerback Antonio Phillips and receiver Jalen Camp. Phillips is an undrafted free agent from Ball State who was in camp with the Cincinnati Bengals, while Camp is a 2021 seventh-round pick for the Jaguars.

7 bubble players to watch in Jags’ preseason finale vs. Cowboys

While the starters who are available will play, Sunday’s game is equally important for some bubble players. Here’s our list of Jaguars who need a good performance to solidify a place on the team.

The final preseason game has almost arrived for the Jacksonville Jaguars as they will be taking on the Dallas Cowboys at 1 p.m. EST at AT&T Stadium. Afterward, Jags coach Urban Meyer and his staff have some tough decisions to make as they have to trim the final roster down to 53 players by 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday.

The Jags will enter Sunday’s game with plenty to figure out, and that’s especially the case on the back end of the roster. That means various bubble players need to make a splash against Dallas if they want to make it to the final roster, or even earn a practice squad designation. Here are a few players we feel will be in that category and believe the staff will be watching closely.

WATCH: Trevor Lawrence drops dimes to his teammates in workout

Lawrence doesn’t appear to be very limited in these clips.

Trevor Lawrence is technically still recovering from shoulder surgery in the spring, but it sure doesn’t look like it. The Jaguars’ first-overall pick posted videos of him throwing routes on air to several of his teammates, receivers Tim Jones and Jalen Camp, as well as tight end Luke Farrell, at the football stadium for Bishop Kenny High School in downtown Jacksonville. All three are rookies, and the latter two were drafted with Lawrence.

There’s no denying that Lawrence looks really sharp here, and the featured throws are dimes. However, these clips should obviously be taken with a grain of salt considering the fact that there are no defenders in coverage or applying pressure to Lawrence.

Still, for a quarterback who’s still supposedly nursing his non-throwing shoulder back to health, he looks pretty comfortable slinging it around. Coach Urban Meyer hinted during minicamp that while Lawrence was limited, he would be able to play if it were Week 1.

These clips seem to demonstrate that, as Lawrence doesn’t appear to be limited at all from the surgery he had less than five months ago. The Jags will hope that means he’s ready to go for the opener against Houston, but there’s an entire training camp to go through before Lawrence can even win the job.

Jaguars come to terms with sixth-round pick Jalen Camp

The Jags have signed sixth-round receiver Jalen Camp to his rookie contract, making him their first signee from the 2021 draft class.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced the signing of sixth-round rookie Jalen Camp Monday. With the former Georgia Tech receiver putting pen to paper, he became the first Jags’ selection from the 2021 class to sign with the team.

Camp was the Jags’ last selection in this year’s draft. They selected him with pick No. 209 and he became the fourth player ever selected from Georgia Tech by the organization.

Camp is believed to be a developmental receiver for the Jags when considering he’s coming into the league with just 48 catches for 808 yards and five touchdowns. He’ll be joining the Jags after registering a career-high of 27 receptions for 439 receiving yards and four touchdowns last season.

Camp caught the eyes of the NFL after testing well during his pro day. He registered a 4.43 40-yard dash time, a 39.5-inch vertical jump, and put up 30 bench press reps (at 225 pounds).

Camp will join the Jags’ receivers group which is loaded with talent at the top with names like DJ Chark Jr., Laviska Shenault Jr., and Marvin Jones Jr. If Camp does make their final roster, it will have to be as the sixth receiver, which would put him in a battle with a receiver like Phillip Dorsett.

Here is the list of players participating in Jags rookie mini-camp

The Jags had nearly 20 players participate in rookie mini camp Saturday, including first-round pick Trevor Lawrence.

The Jacksonville Jaguars started their field work for rookie mini-camp Saturday, giving their rookie draft picks, undrafted rookie free agents, and a few first-year players an early opportunity to take the practice field together. In all, the Jags announced that 18 players took the field, nine of whom were drafted.

All nine of the Jags’ draft selections from April are present, though Jay Tufele wasn’t on the field Saturday due to an inconclusive COVID-19 test. Per Mia O’Brien of First Coast News, he should be back Sunday. Third-round safety Andre Cisco and undrafted rookie free agent linebacker Dylan Moses worked off to the side.

Of course, Cisco is coming off an ACL tear last season, which occurred in late September in a pre-game warmup drill. Moses, on the other hand, is coming off a season where he played on a torn MCL.

Second-round cornerback Tyson Campbell also worked off to the side Saturday after injuring his hamstring Friday.

Three of the Jags’ 18 players who participated in rookie mini-camp were first-year players on the roster last year in receiver Josh Hammond, offensive tackle Austen Pleasants, and defensive end Aaron Patrick.

Their were six undrafted players to take the field Saturday in addition to Moses. Those players were receivers Josh Imatorbhebhe and Tim Jones, defensive lineman Kenny Randall, cornerback Corey Straughter, and DJ Daniel.

Jags reveal 2021 rookie class numbers before mini-camp

The Jags have begun rookie mini-camp and revealed the numbers for each member of their rookie class before Practice Session 1.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ rookie class took the field Saturday for mini-camp, marking their first NFL practice session. Prior to taking the field, the Jags also revealed the numbers of each rookie selection, which came with some interesting decisions.

Among the most interesting were the numbers Tyson Campbell and Luke Farrell chose, which were the numbers Maurice Jones-Drew (32) and Marcedes Lewis (89), respectively, wore with the Jags.

Jones-Drew’s number, which is currently Campbell’s, hasn’t been worn in the regular season since 2013 when the veteran tailback last took the field for Jacksonville. Campbell’s number was three at Georgia (which can be worn by him in the NFL, too), but that number is occupied by quarterback C.J. Beathard currently.

However, the No. 89 was last worn by tight end Josh Oliver, who was traded to the Baltimore Ravens this offseason. That said, it’s not surprising to see Farrell take it as he wore 89 at Ohio State.

As expected, first overall pick Trevor Lawrence will be wearing No. 16, which was established upon his selection. As for his fellow draft selections on the offensive side, tailback Travis Etienne will wear the No. 1 (as expected), offensive tackle Walker Little will wear the No. 72, and receiver Jalen Camp will wear 12.

On defense, safety Andre Cisco will wear the No. 38, defensive tackle Jay Tufele will wear the No. 97, and edge rusher Jordan Smith will wear the No. 92.
