Browns held pre-draft visit with Northern Michigan deep sleeper left tackle

Could the Browns target a tackle late in the draft?

With the draft just over a week away, the Cleveland Browns continue to scout offensive linemen. According to Dane Brugler, the Browns are among the teams meeting with stand-out Division-II left tackle Jake Witt from Northern Michigan.

Brugler has spoken about Witt before calling him “a super freak” that will get drafted. Witt has great size and tools at 6-foot-7 and 300 pounds and running a sub-5 second 40-yard dash time. He has an intriguing back story having been a star basketball player in high school and beginning his career at Northern Michigan as a tight end.

Yes, you read that right but Witt was forced into playing right tackle due to injuries before he added size and became the team’s left tackle. Witt was a natural at the position and could be a nice developmental player for Bill Callahan.

1 OT prospect for Colts in each round of NFL draft

Taking a look at OT prospects for the Colts in each round of the draft.

The Indianapolis Colts are just under two weeks away from the start of the 2023 NFL draft where they’ll be looking to add talent and depth to the roster.

While the roster on paper features two starters at the offensive tackle positions in Bernhard Raimann and Braden Smith, the Colts likely will enter the draft looking to add some depth and competition to the room. It may come closer to selections later on Day 2 or more likely on Day 3, but the need is there.

It also wouldn’t be a surprise if the Colts added a veteran offensive tackle through free agency ahead of the draft just to bring in some extra competition to the room. As it currently stands, they only have four offensive tackles on the roster in Raimann, Smith, Jordan Murray and Carter O’Donnell.

Following this series of articles, we’ve also looked at these positions:

We’ll be tracking the Colts’ reported interest in the 2023 draft class so be sure to keep up with latest updates via our tracker.

Here’s a look at offensive tackle prospects who fits the Colts in each round of the draft:

Broncos host OT Jake Witt on top-30 visit

Small school OT Jake Witt turned heads at NMU’s pro day, earning an invitation to visit the Broncos ahead of the NFL draft.

The Denver Broncos scheduled a top-30 visit with Northern Michigan (Division II) OT Jake Witt last month, according to The Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler. NFL teams are allowed to host up to 30 non-local prospects at their facility leading up to the draft each offseason.

Witt (6-7, 302 pounds) started his college career at Michigan Tech playing basketball before later transferring to Northern Michigan in 2019. He initially played as a tight end at NMU before being moved to the offensive line out of necessity during an injury crisis during the 2021 season.

Witt then gained weight ahead of the 2022 season and played offensive tackle as a senior, starting all 11 games. Despite playing for a small school, Witt is on the radar of NFL teams as the draft approaches.

Witt impressed at NMU’s pro day last month, running a 40-yard dash in 4.89 seconds and posting a 37-inch vertical jump, according to Fowler.

Witt will likely be viewed as a late-round prospect or undrafted free agent candidate. The Broncos’ final pick is set to be No. 195 overall in the sixth round (view Denver’s complete order of picks here).

The NFL draft will be held in Kansas City from April 27-29.

Chiefs had pre-draft meeting with Northern Michigan OT Jake Witt

The #Chiefs have met with a fast-rising D-II offensive tackle prospect who created a ton of buzz with his incredible pro day performance.

The Kansas City Chiefs seem to be taking a hard look at the offensive tackles in this draft class whether it’s a consensus player at the top of the class to those on the rise through the pre-draft process.

According to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, only two teams haven’t met with Northern Michigan OT Jake Witt in some shape or form during his meteoric pre-draft rise. The Chiefs are among the 30 teams to have met with him.

Witt had a chance to perform in front of NFL scouts at the Central Michigan pro day earlier this month, where he put up crazy numbers at 6-foot-7 and 301 pounds. His 37-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-3 broad jump and 4.89s 40-yard dash would have been top scores among offensive tackles at the combine this year. His broad jump would have exceeded all-time marks for his position in Indy.

Witt didn’t start playing football at the college level until 2020 after transferring from Michigan Tech where he played basketball. He originally started out as a blocking tight end, but the COVID-19 pandemic ended the season prematurely. In 2021, Witt would play his first eight games at tight end before he was thrust into action at offensive tackle when injuries forced the Wildcats to improvise. He’d go on to transform his body to play full-time in 2022 as Northern Michigan’s left tackle.

Heading into the 2023 NFL draft, Witt has only played in just 14 career Division II college games as an offensive lineman, but his pro day performance almost assures that he’ll be a late-round pick in April. His rare athletic ability and on-field performance in a short time are more than enough reasons for a team to take a late-round flier. Perhaps that team will be the reigning Super Bowl champions.
