Watch: Jake Hummel returns INT for TD while Sean McVay is doing TV interview

Jake Hummel’s pick-six against the Raiders came at a perfect time while Sean McVay was doing a TV interview

What better time for a pick-six than while your head coach is doing an interview on the preseason broadcast? That’s exactly what Jake Hummel just pulled off against the Raiders.

The Rams linebacker picked off Brian Hoyer on a throw over the middle and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 10 apiece. McVay was doing a “Coach Cam” interview on the game broadcast, so we got a raw and genuine reaction from the head coach when the play happened.

It was awesome to see McVay so excited for his player as he pulled in the pick and sprinted to the end zone.

“Great job Jake Hummel! That’s a hook player takin’ it to the crib, baby! How about that hook drop? My man Hummel! Captain tonight. Oh man, is that exciting.”

McVay went over and congratulated Hummel after the play, too, showing a lot of support for his guy following the game-changing pick.

Hummel has been all over the field tonight against the Raiders, racking up five tackles and that pick-six in the first half alone.

Lance McCutcheon among 3 undrafted rookies to make Rams’ roster

Lance McCutcheon was among 3 undrafted rookies that made the 53-man roster for the Rams entering the 2022 season.

Lance McCutcheon was one of the preseason stars for the Los Angeles Rams and his efforts are being rewarded. With the Rams announcing their final roster cuts to trim their roster to 53 players, Los Angeles had three undrafted rookies make the roster, including McCutcheon.

Besides McCutcheon, Keir Thomas and Jake Hummel were the other undrafted rookies to make the team. All three of them had productive performances in the preseason, earning them a spot on the active roster.

With the Rams not playing their starters in the preseason, McCutcheon got plenty of reps at the wide receiver position. The first-year wideout out of Montana State combined for 15 receptions, 259 receiving yards, and two touchdowns in the team’s three exhibition games, leading the NFL in yards.

Meanwhile, Thomas saved his best for last in the preseason finale versus the Cincinnati Bengals. While totaling two tackles in the first two preseason contests, Thomas logged three tackles and a sack in the loss to the Bengals.

The Rams are entering the 2022 campaign with a revamped inside linebacker room that now features Bobby Wagner and Ernest Jones. Even if Wagner or Jones miss any time, Los Angeles is confident in Travin Howard and Hummel to provide depth.

Even though preseason records aren’t well-regarded, Hummel broke the team’s preseason tackles record with 22 combined tackles. Accumulating 22 tackles is even more impressive when you consider the NFL now plays three preseason games instead of four as they did previously.

It’s a tall task for undrafted rookies to earn a spot on an active roster in the NFL, but the Rams have three guys that proved they can supply value in 2022 and potentially beyond.

Fun fact: Jake Hummel broke Rams’ preseason tackles record

Jake Hummel was all around the ball throughout the preseason, setting the Rams’ preseason record with 22 tackles in 3 games

No one is going to see preseason stats when looking at the NFL record books, but it’s still fun to hear about preseason records being broken. After Saturday night’s loss to the Bengals, Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters a fun fact about the last three exhibition games.

He said linebacker Jake Hummel broke the Rams’ preseason record for tackles. He finished the three games with 22 total tackles, topping the previous record of 21. That seems hard to believe considering teams used to play four preseason games each, but 22 tackles is still a lot for one player in three preseason games when guys typically aren’t playing every snap.

“Jake Hummel ended up breaking the Rams preseason record tonight for 21 tackles. He’s been active throughout all three games,” McVay said.

Hummel has an outside chance of making the 53-man roster at a position where the Rams might only keep three or four players. He made a strong case this preseason with a good showing, but it may not be enough.

He could stick around on the practice squad, though.

5 Rams to watch in preseason Week 3 vs. Bengals

The Rams face the Bengals in their preseason finale on Saturday and these 5 players should have every fan’s attention.

The Los Angeles Rams are set to conclude their preseason schedule versus the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday night. It will be a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl, though, not many of the starters in that game will be active in Saturday’s contest – if any at all.

With it being the final week of the preseason, this is the final chance for certain players to earn a spot on the 53-man rosters for the regular season. Even if a player has a strong showing on Saturday and doesn’t secure a spot on the active roster, it could be enough to catch the attention of another team.

Taking all of that into consideration, here are five Rams players to watch in their preseason finale versus the Bengals.
