Not re-signed after UFC Fight Night 245 upset loss, Jake Hadley says being ‘a company man’ didn’t pay off

It didn’t take long for the UFC’s matchmaking team and brass to make a decision on Jake Hadley after his third loss in four fights.

It didn’t take long for the UFC’s matchmaking team and brass to make a decision on [autotag]Jake Hadley[/autotag] after his third loss in four fights.

Hadley will have to work his way back to the UFC after an upset loss on the main card at UFC Fight Night 245 this past Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Hadley announced the news on social media Wednesday, but made a point to say his contract was up, and he “wasn’t cut.”

Hadley (11-4 MMA, 3-4 UFC) was the biggest favorite on the card at more than 6-1 against Smotherman (12-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who took the fight on just a few days’ notice after Brady Hiestand pulled out. But Smotherman outworked him over 15 minutes for a unanimous decision.

“I wasn’t cut my contract came to an end,” Hadley posted on social media. “took 2 big risks my last 2 fights being a company man and it bit me on the arse. Took block head on a weeks notice but missed the weight which was obviously held against me then took cam on 3 days notice after originally training for a wrestling based opponent I understand cam didn’t do a camp but everyone’s ready always for 3x5s cmon I proven that vs block head took the fight on baby’s due date because fight was offered and didn’t wanna say no to the ufc and be a company man but ohh well if I choose to work my way back to the UFC I know I can do that again no problem.”

https://twitter.com/jakehadleymma/status/1849179246129746417

Hadley won the Cage Warriors flyweight title in late 2020. Ten months later, he took a fight on Dana White’s Contender Series and earned his way into the UFC – even though he missed weight.

After a loss in his promotional debut, he won back-to-back fights against Carlos Candelario and Malcolm Gordon, the latter of which was a 61-second knockout worth an extra $50,000.

But then came consecutive losses to Cody Durden and Charles Johnson at flyweight, and he missed weight when he moved up to bantamweight for a fight with Caolan Loughran earlier this year, which he referenced in his post.

The Smotherman loss was the nail in the coffin of the 28-year-old Brit’s UFC tenure for now.

Jake Hadley vs. Cameron Smotherman prediction, pick, start time for UFC Fight Night 245

Cameron Smotherman debuts on short notice in a UFC Fight Night 245 main card slot opposite Jake Hadley. Can he pull off a stunner?

[autotag]Jake Hadley[/autotag] and [autotag]Cameron Smotherman[/autotag] meet Saturday on the main card of UFC Fight Night 245 at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 3-3
UFC main cards, 2024: 87-77-3

Jake Hadley vs. Cameron Smotherman UFC Fight Night 245 preview

Hadley (11-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) gets a late opponent change in a key spot as he looks to stay above .500 in the UFC. In his last outing, Hadley won a unanimous decision over Caolan Loughran, although a weight miss tainted it. This will be Hadley’s third fight of 2024. … Smotherman (11-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) makes his UFC debut on very short notice. After being stopped on Dana White’s Contender Series last August, Smotherman has picked up three straight wins under Fury’s banner.

Jake Hadley vs. Cameron Smotherman UFC Fight Night 245 expert pick, prediction

Serving as an impromptu bout at bantamweight is a fight between Hadley and Smotherman.

Hadley was initially slated to face Brady Hiestand, who was forced to withdraw from the contest.

Smotherman, who was last seen in the Apex in a DWCS loss to Charalampos Grigoriou, is getting the short-notice call based on the strength of his current three-fight winning streak.

Smotherman can produce some fun moments if given the chance, but it’s hard to like said chances on this short of notice opposite a southpaw like Hadley.

Not only is Hadley a submission stud on the floor, but the Englishman can work at a high pace and loves to work the body (which I see being particularly effective in this contest).

The pick is Hadley to produce a stoppage by strikes in Round 2.

Jake Hadley vs. Cameron Smotherman UFC Fight Night 245 odds

The oddsmakers and the public favor the English fighter, listing Hadley -550 and Smotherman +390 via FanDuel.

Jake Hadley vs. Cameron Smotherman UFC Fight Night 245 start time, how to watch

Hadley and Smotherman are expected to walk to the cage at approximately 7:35 p.m. ET (4:35 p.m. PT). The fight will stream on ESPN+.

Hadley on the fight’s key moment

Jake Hadley def. Caolan Loughran, UFC 304 (via UFC)

“I feel like my career was potentially on the line. I took a big risk stepping up on one week notice – no training camp or anything. Funny enough, actually, when I got the call, I was just about to eat my dessert. Then I get this call and it kind of made me a bit nervous. I’m like, ‘Bro, this guy’s is a big bantamweight. I’ve seen him kill guys. I’m actually a fan of his.’ When I felt them nerves, I knew: Yo, this is my time to go. You get me like this, first time I felt any sort of jitters since I was younger, and I knew it was time to fight.”

“I thought he was boring. He’s an idiot. He’s just trying to fight everyone in the back. He sucker punched Manel Kape and all these geezers. He’s a clown. He tried to start on me in the on the bus yesterday, but I’ll smash his head in, that idiot. If he wants to come up to 135 – I’d even go down back down to 125 just to smash his head in. He’s never wanted that fight in his life, but he’s higher up the ranking, so I can understand. But when we were both on the same ranking level, he never wanted the fight. He don’t want the fight – and I’d kill him.”

Hadley on what he wants next

Jake Hadley

“I stepped up on short notice, took this on a week’s notice. (I did) it for the UFC. I’ve had a bit of not a great run the last two, but I took this on short notice. All I ask for now is that they get me a fight again before the end of September.”

‘I actually saw God for a second’: Jake Hadley reveals brutal weight cut after UFC on ESPN 50 loss to Cody Durden

Jake Hadley says his devastating weight cut compromised his performance at UFC on ESPN 50.

[autotag]Jake Hadley[/autotag] says his devastating weight cut compromised his performance at UFC on ESPN 50.

Hadley (10-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) lost a unanimous decision in an all-out war against [autotag]Cody Durden[/autotag] (16-4-1 MMA, 5-2-1 UFC) in their flyweight bout this past Saturday at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

Hadley released a statement on social media, revealing that he experienced a near-death situation during his weight cut.

“Lost the fight few things went wrong before the fight I almost died during the weight cut I actually saw God for a second. couldn’t rehydrate like normal felt like that had a major effect on my performance because I couldn’t push like normal anyone who knows me knows I never gas.”

“Fix theses mistakes ready for the next one respect to Cody he showed he was a true warrior surviving that armbar what a gangster. Nashville fans was absolutely amazing they really showed me some love lot of people telling me should of been FOTN I dunno but Durden deserves a bonus.”
