Injury Update: Dan Lanning offers notes on Gary Bryant Jr., Jahlil Florence

Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning offered an injury update on a couple of key players ahead of the Pac-12 Championship Game.

Throughout most of the season, the Oregon Ducks have been able to avoid the injury bug for the most part. While RB Noah Whittington was lost to a season-ending leg injury earlier in the season, and S Bryan Addison has been away from the team due to personal issues, aside from that we don’t know of many major injuries that have taken place.

That appears to be the case going into Conference Championship week as well.

The Ducks got a little bit banged up last weekend against the Oregon State Beavers, with wide receiver Gary Bryant notably taking a tough shot out of bounds, but he seemed to have a positive outlook after the game. The Ducks were also without CB Jahlil Florence in the game, who was using crutches on the sideline.

On Monday night, Lanning offered an update on those injured players:

“He’s out there and getting better,” Lanning said when asked about Bryant. “I think we’ll be in good shape to have him this weekend.”

When it comes to Florence, and fellow cornerback Rodrick Pleasant, Lanning was a little bit less clear.

“I’m expecting us to have some of those guys back,” Lanning said. “We’ll have to wait and see as the week progresses. That’s kind of the way it goes at this point of the season.”

Florence has been one of the top secondary players for Oregon this year, starting the first 11 games of the year. In his absence, Dontae Manning stepped up in a major way and grabbed his first career interception.

Practice is closed to media members this week, so we won’t get a chance to see if any of the aforementioned players are practicing. The best chance we will get to see won’t be until pregame on Friday afternoon.

Dan Lanning offers injury update on Bucky Irving, Khyree Jackson, others ahead of ASU game

Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning offered an injury update on some key players ahead of Saturday’s game against ASU.

While there didn’t appear to be any major injuries that took place for the Oregon Ducks on Saturday night in a 36-27 win over the USC Trojans, there were a few minor injuries to note after all was said and done.

During the game, guys like Bucky Irving, Khyree Jackson, Jackson Powers-Johnson, and Jahlil Florence all left the game with injuries, and while many of them returned, there is some concern about their availability going forward.

On Monday night during his weekly press conference, Lanning addressed those injuries, starting with the cornerbacks.

“Yeah, they all (practiced) and I definitely think they’ll be able to help us this week,” Lanning said when asked about Jackson, Florence, and Manning.

Later, when the conversation about Powers-Johnson and Irving game up, Laning offered more positive news.

“Both those guys were practicing today, expect them to be available,” Lanning said.

We will monitor throughout the week and see which players are able to practice in full and if anyone is held out, but this is certainly positive news to start the week.

Dan Lanning offers update on CB Jahlil Florence injury, current status of S Bryan Addison

Dan Lanning offers update on CB Jahlil Florence injury, current status of S Bryan Addison

Oregon’s injury report could be much worse after the 36-33 loss to Washington on Saturday. Several players went out and did not return and had to watch their backups finish the game for them.

But from the sounds of it, the Ducks should be relatively good to go as they prepare to take on Washington State for a 12:30 p.m. PT kickoff on ABC this weekend.

The biggest concern had to have been corner Jahlil Florence, who went out with an apparent arm injury early in the third quarter. Although Twikweze Bridges came on and played well, Oregon could have certainly used Florence in that decisive fourth quarter.

Here’s the early-in-the-week injury report for the Ducks.

Stock Report: Oregon’s secondary shines, defensive line shows major push

Stock Report: Oregon’s secondary shines, defensive line shows major push

Similar to Week 1’s blowout win over the Portland State Vikings, it’s pretty hard to nitpick a game like Saturday’s against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. The Oregon Ducks won, 55-10, in dominant fashion.

The offense put up numbers, the defense shut things down, and a long list of young players and depth pieces were able to get on the field and see some meaningful minutes.

All in all, it was a great day at Autzen Stadium, outside of those frustrating penalties that once again proved a problem. Dan Lanning addressed that after the game, but he was also eager to highlight the performances of his players. As we do each week, here is our stock report following the game, highlighting the players who did the most to help or hurt their case going forward:

Second-year Ducks who have biggest chance to break out in 2023 for Oregon

Fall camp is the best time to identify potential breakout players. In Eugene, these second-year guys have caught our eye so far.

With over a week of fall camp behind us now for the Oregon Ducks, we’ve seen enough football and talked to enough coaches and players to start to get a sense of what is to be expected in the coming season.

One of the things that is always fun to try and identify during fall camp is a list of players who could be primed for a breakout. Whether that is experienced players who haven’t gotten an opportunity to prove their worth just yet, or young players who could be stepping into a vital role with a year of experience under their belts, there are always a handful of guys going into each season that look bigger, better, and ready to contribute.

Whether it’s due to a massive weight gain or an increased knowledge of the scheme, the Ducks have a long list of second-year players who we have identified as candidates to break out in 2023.

Here’s who our eyes are on:

Position Outlook: Nikko Reed adds another playmaker to crowded cornerback room

Who will be competing for the starting CB spots at Oregon, and how good are their chances of securing it? We broke down the options.

When coming to Oregon over a year ago, head coach Dan Lanning said that he wanted to create a Ducks’ roster that was stacked with talent, and competitive top to bottom. He didn’t care about the players who were listed as starters before his time in Eugene; his goal was to amass talent and have them all compete for the starting spot on the field.

“Iron sharpens iron.”

It’s a common phrase uttered by Lanning and his staff. It’s been impressive to see how the roster has taken shape over the past off-season with that ideal in mind.

Position battles are going to be fascinating to watch this fall in Eugene. With a handful of incoming transfers and many more highly-ranked recruits, the Ducks have a roster that is fraught with guys who could easily win the starting jobs.

One of the positions on the roster that will see the most competition is cornerback. The Ducks have welcomed in a couple of transfers who have shown that they can produce at a high level in the past, and there are some incoming freshmen who have a shot to make some noise as well. On top of the newcomers, veteran mainstays like Trikweze Bridges, Dontae Manning, and Jahlil Florence are also fighting to stay near the top of the depth chart.

What will the end result be once fall comes? We can’t wait to see. Here’s an early position outlook for the cornerbacks in Eugene.

Jahlil Florence lobbies for high school teammate and 4-star RB Roderick Robinson to join him in Eugene

Oregon CB Jahlil Florence is pushing for a Lincoln HS reunion in Eugene, lobbying to Roderick Robinson to commit to Oregon.

It’s normal for high school students to want to go to where the party is, especially when picking a college to spend the next few years at.

For 4-star San Diego running back Roderick Robinson II, the party that a number of his friends are currently at is in Eugene. Robinson recently cut down his recruiting list to 6 schools and included the Oregon Ducks in the mix. He now has former teammate Jahlil Florence lobbying hard for him to come up to Eugene to play alongside him and fellow true freshman, Jalil Tucker, down the road after his final season of high school ball.

Florence, Tucker, and Robinson all played together at Lincoln High School and were considered a dynamic trio together. Florence enrolled early with the Ducks and had an impressive spring showing with one interception in the spring game. While Tucker finishes out his senior year and final high school track season, he is set to come to Eugene this summer and get ready for his freshman season.

It’s clear that Robinson has friends up north in Oregon and ones who are going to push hard for him to join them. He also has a pair of teammates who can answer any questions about the program, and show him how much fun they are having with the Ducks. That may be the inside scoop that Oregon needs to land a player like Robinson.

Freshman cornerback Jahlil Florence making strides in spring camp

Cornerback Jahlil Florence is one of a few recruits in the Class of 2022 already on campus, in camp, and learning on the fly.

[jwplayer XnoWuK39]

He’s a Duck. He’s not a Duck. Yes, he’s a Duck.

That’s how the recruiting process went for true freshman cornerback Jahlil Florence and many thought this day wouldn’t come.

Florence committed to Oregon in August and de-committed when Mario Cristobal took Miami job. But unlike a lot of recruits when a coach leaves, Florence left the door open to recommit to Oregon after Dan Lanning was hired.

Not only did the four-star recruit out of San Diego finally settle on being a Duck and spurning USC in the process, but Florence also is in spring camp and doing his best to impress coaches and teammates alike.

“He’s doing good. He’s definitely going to help us. He’s strengthening the depth definitely,” said cornerbacks coach and passing game coordinator Demetrice Martin. “Just trying to get a little bit more out of him, catching him up mentally and technically.

“He’s a little bit behind as he should be. He should be getting ready to go to his prom pretty soon. He’s here, he’s working and he’s going to be right by fall camp.”

Many feel Florence has the talent in order to see the field as a true freshman and make some kind of an impact. He was one of the top recruits to come out of the state of California and there was a reason USC made late push for his services.

At nearly 6-foot-2 and a speed burner, Florence is that rare corner that can cover the taller receivers and still be a factor in the run game. Getting the 180-pounder into spring camp and into the weight room as well as learning defensive techniques on the college level will only help Florence in the long run.

It’ll also help the Ducks in the near and distant future as well.

Oregon football storylines to follow: Which true freshmen will have an instant impact this spring?

We only know of a few true freshmen to join the Ducks for spring ball, but can’t wait to see which players have an instant impact.

The past couple of months of Oregon Football have certainly been eventful, all the while very little action took place on the field. A new coaching staff has been put into place, and a top-25 recruiting class has been signed. Meanwhile, highly-rated transfers have come to Eugene, and a few key players have left for new destinations.

For an Oregon fan, there are a lot of storylines to keep track of, and with Spring Practice starting on March 10th, we will likely get a few answers in the coming weeks. So which ones should you be paying the most attention to? We tried to help answer that question in our continuing Spring Preview by singling out a few and highlighting what makes them so interesting.

The True Freshmen Watch is On

The Oregon Ducks’ 2022 recruiting class definitely wasn’t the highest-rated that we’ve seen in recent memory, but it garnered a lot of excitement. To be up-front, the Ducks’ 25th-ranked class this year was their worst finish nationally since 2016 when they had the No. 27 overall class. Since then, Oregon has made it into the top-10 a pair of times and been inside the top-15 a total of four times. Despite that, the way that Dan Lanning closed on national signing day gave a burst of energy to the Oregon fanbase.

[lawrence-related id=20350]

A lot of that has to do with the fact that the Ducks’ class was ranked in the 70s after the departure of Mario Cristobal left for Miami. Lanning’s top crew of recruiters managed to build it back up, securing numerous flips from top-rated players like RB Jordan James and OL Dave Iuli, who chose the Ducks over Georgia and Miami, respectively.

Now with spring football on the horizon, we finally get to see some of these players in action.

Earlier this week, Ducks Wire has received confirmation that 4-star CB Jahlil Florence, 4-star WR Justius Lowe, 4-star LB Harrison Taggart, and 4-star ATH Anthony Jones will be enrolling early at Oregon and participating in spring ball, but we are waiting on confirmation from more players.

[lawrence-related id=20374]

While we don’t know the entire list of true freshmen to be enrolling early at Oregon, there has been a noticeable trend as of late that has seen high school seniors choose to graduate early and head off to college as soon as they can in order to get acclimated in the new lifestyle before the summer and football season begins. We saw that last season with QB Ty Thompson and WRs Troy Franklin and Dont’e Thornton, all of whom had impressive days during the Oregon Spring Game. So who will be the newcomers to have a big impact this year?

Without knowing the entire list just yet, it is impossible to say, but there are a number of recent recruits that we have high hopes for in 2022. Let’s touch on a few:

RB Jordan James

We are still waiting on confirmation from 4-star RB Jordan James as to whether or not he will be participating in the spring, but you can guarantee that he is going to attract a lot of eyes once he does finally hit the field in Eugene.

After flipping his commitment on national signing day and choosing the Ducks over the Georgia Bulldogs, there is a hope that he can develop into one of the feature backs for Oregon’s offense. That may not take place this year, with Byron Cardwell and Sean Dollars seemingly leading the way, but whatever we see from James early on will be newsworthy.

4-star WR Justius Lowe to enroll early, join Oregon Ducks for spring football

Lake Oswego’s Justius Lowe will be enrolling early at Oregon and playing spring football with the Ducks, joining 4-star CB Jahlil Florence.

[jwplayer 1ovY03vr]

Thursday brought the news four-star cornerback Jahlil Florence plans to enroll early at Oregon and join the Ducks for spring football. Now another incoming freshman is joining the fray.

Ducks Wire has confirmed four-star wide receiver Justius Lowe will also enroll early and join the team for spring ball in March.

[lawrence-related id=20350]

Lowe originally committed to the Utah Utes but decommitted and chose the Ducks. He played high school ball at Lake Oswego in the Portland area and thrived as both a defensive back and wide receiver. With the Ducks, he is expected to start as a receiver and add depth to a WR room that had a number of key players leave this offseason.

[lawrence-related id=20325]

With Troy Franklin, Dont’e Thornton and Kris Hutson stepping up as the new top trio in the WR room, the Ducks are looking to fill the depth chart this spring. UCLA transfer Chase Cota certainly helps that cause, but it will be interesting to see how Lowe performs at the college level and if he can make any sort of impact in his early days with the Ducks.
