Jahan Dotson got emotional after smashing Penn State’s single-game receiving record

Penn State WR Jahan Dotson got a little emotional following his school-record performance against Maryland

You can have fun debating who the best wide receiver in Penn State’s program history is, but Jahan Dotson continues to make a strong case to be considered in the conversation. In his performance against Maryland in Week 10 of the 2021 season, Dotson added another debating point in his favor by not only setting a new Penn State school record, but smashing the old one in the process.

Dotson set a new Penn State school record for most receiving yards in a single game by racking up 242 yards against Maryland in a 31-14 victory on Nov. 6, 2021. Dotson now cruised past the previous record of 216 yards in a 2006 game against Northwestern.

After the game, Dotson got a bit emotional reflecting on how his family helped him get to this point in his collegiate career.

Dotson is now the fourth player in Penn State history to have 200 receiving yards in a single game. In addition to Butler, the previous record-holder, Dotson joins O.J. McDuffie (212 yards vs. Boston College in 1992), and Bobby Engram. Engram is the only Penn State player with multiple 200-yard games with 200 yards against Rutgers in 1994 and 203 yards against Purdue in 1995.

Penn State Twitter was mildly optimistic after a win against Maryland

Penn State Twitter was mildly optimistic after the Nittany Lions toppled Maryland in Week 10

Twitter is always a fun place, or a dangerous place, to find instant reactions from fans in real time. And after th first half of Penn State’s games, Twitter was full of negativity and pessimism with Penn State clinging to a 7-6 lead at Maryland. So how did fans react to the game after Penn State pulled away with some big plays to score a 31-14 victory at Maryland?

As you might expect, there were some more positive vibes after the game from Penn State Twitter, although a few fans can’t help but enjoy a win it seems.

[lawrence-related id=9463,9458]

Here is how Twitter reacted to Penn State win over Maryland, starting with this little bit of incoherent stream of consciousness…

Jahan Dotson had a monster game, setting the school record for most receiving yards in a single game. Some fans loved it, and may have gone too far in establishing just where Dotson ranks in the history of college football’s top wide receivers, but who are we to rain on the parade?

It may not have been pretty, but some fans are finding an optimistic way of shedding some perspective on the entirety of the season to this point.

And some others took another spin on things…

Some fans still are not fans of how Maryland suits up for games…

How did a Maryland fan react to the game? By looking back fondly on a previous regime, of which Franklin was a small part of once upon a time…

And a word to the wise when it comes to in-game sports wagers…

Penn State will return home next week when they take on Michigan at Beaver Stadium.

Report Card: Grading Penn State’s win over Maryland

Report Card: The early grades are in following Penn State’s win against Maryland. Jahan Dotson earned very high marks

Penn State had a very up-and-down performance against Maryland in Week 10, but they finished much better than how they started the game. With a 31-14 victory over the Terrapins on the road, Penn State snapped its three-game losing streak and clinched bowl eligibility for the 2021 season.

Let’s take a more in-depth look and grade the performance of the Nittany Lions win today.

Quarterbacks: A-

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Sean Clifford finished better than how he started. Penn State’s offense started off very shaky to open up the game. Even though he didn’t have consistent protection, Clifford had a very up-and-down performance in the first half. Clifford has played much more like himself ever since their loss to Illinois two weeks ago.

Instant Reaction: Jahan Dotson leads Penn State to 31-14 win at Maryland

Instant Reaction: Penn State grabs a win at Maryland behind big game from Jahan Dotson

Penn State has defeated Maryland, 31-14, in a gutsy performance from start to finish. Jahan Dotson set a new school record for the most receiving yards in a game and the Nittany Lions are now bowl eligible with three games to play.

The Penn State offense really struggled to get the ball moving to start the game, going -7 yards to start their first drive and back four yards on its second drive. But a big touchdown strike from Sean Clifford to Dotson, the first of three in the game, opened the scoring in Penn State’s favor.

[lawrence-related id=9415]

The Nittany Lions didn’t really get it going until late in the third quarter. It was a low-scoring game with several mistakes from both Sean Clifford and their struggling offensive line.

There were also quite a few questionable plays that many fans took to Twitter, expressing their frustrations and blaming it on coaching.

[lawrence-related id=9421]

For example, there were drives where Penn State attempted to go for it on fourth down using their run game, where they have struggled at all season. Both teams had a fairly quiet first half. Maryland missed a PAT to put Penn State up 7-6 at halftime.

The offense just didn’t click all game. Despite three big touchdown catches from Jahan Dotson, there wasn’t much rhythm in the passing game.

[lawrence-related id=9453,9418]

Dotson’s third touchdown run ended up being Penn State’s longest offensive play of the season. He is continuing to perform at the highest level and could potentially hear his name called as a first-round wide receiver come April.

Penn State heads back home to take on the Michigan Wolverines, who, despite their loss to Michigan State last weekend, have had an impressive season.

With three games left of the season, it’s all about how they finish. Michigan is a winnable game, but a lot is going to have to change after today’s performance.

WATCH: Jahan Dotson scores 86-yard TD to break tie with Maryland

WATCH: Penn State WR Jahan Dotson races away from the Maryland defense to put PUS back in front

After Maryland clawed their way back to tie the game early in the fourth quarter against Penn State, it was Jahan Dotson who provided the much-needed answer for the Penn State offense. For the third time in the game, Dotson was on the receiving end of a touchdown pass from Sean Clifford, but it was his third one that left the Maryland defense in the dust.

On a 2nd-and-17 from the Penn State 14-yard line, Clifford dropped back and waited for one of his receivers to find some open space. Leave it to Dotson to do just that. After hauling in a deep lob over the middle from Clifford, Dotson turned on the jets and sped his way down the middle of the field separating himself from the Maryland defenders for the score.

With the touchdown, his third of the game, Dotson was up to 189 receiving yards in the game.  And the way the fourth quarter is going, Penn State may need to rely on Dotson to make another big catch or two. Clifford is now with a 300-yard day on the dot with that touchdown to Dotson.

By the numbers: Top 10 single-game receiving records in Penn State Nittany Lions history

Jahan Dotson has the school-record for most single-game receiving yards by a Penn State receiver.

Some of Penn State’s best all-time wide receivers, not surprisingly, have been responsible for turning in some of the program’s biggest single-game performances. But in the history of the Penn State program, just four games have seen a Penn State wide receiver eclipse the 200-yard mark, and it has happened just once since 1995.

Bobby Engram, the program’s all-time leading wide receiver, owns two of Penn State’s all-time 200-yard receiving performances, with one against Rutgers in 1994 and one more against Purdue the following season. Engram owns three of Penn State’s top-10 single-game receiving games, as he took advantage of a dreadful Rutgers program once more in 1995. Allen Robinson left his mark on the Penn State single-game receiving top 10 as well with three games standing out in the record books.

Penn State’s leading receiver heading into the 2021 season, Jahan Dotson, also makes an appearance on the top 10 list. And given that Dotson wants to leave a legendary mark at Penn State, he might just find a get another top 10 single-game performance in the top 10 before the end of the season.

Here’s a look at Penn State’s top 10 single-game receiving performances prior to the start of the 2021 season.

WATCH: Sean Clifford connects with Jahan Dotson for first score vs. Maryland

WATCH: Jahan Dotson gets open, Sean Clifford seizes the moment for 38-yard TD for early lead at Maryland

If Penn State is going to get back on the winning track, Sean Clifford and Jahan Dotson need to make some plays against Maryland. After a shaky start on offense for the Nittany Lions, Clifford and Dotson capped a scoring drive with a big touchdown pass against the Maryland defense.

Penn State’s offense went the wrong way on each of their first two offensive possessions of the game against Maryland, losing seven yards on the game’s opening drive and going back four more yards on their second possessions. But after the Penn State defense did its thing to keep Maryland from taking advantage of a slow start by the offense, Penn State struck on their third series as Clifford got more in rhythm.

Clifford connected for a 38-yard touchdown to Dotson on the fourth play o the third offensive series for Penn State. Dotson made a move to create plenty of open space for Clifford to capitalize on. Dotson had to turn back for the football but he was deep enough down the field where he could easily score the touchdown at the end of the play.

The score was the first of the game, giving Penn State an early lead to play with.

3 Keys for a Penn State win over Maryland

Here are a few keys to a Penn State victory on Saturday against Maryland.

Penn State is at a critical point in their season. Moired in a three-game losing streak, the Nittany Lions hope to get back in the win column this weekend at Maryland. Penn State will learn a lot about itself Saturday afternoon as tey can easily see the season go two different paths based on their performance against the Terps.

Will Penn State be able to get November off to a good start to close out the regular season on a winning note, or will the struggles continue to cast doubt over the state of the program?

Here are three keys for a Penn State win over Maryland on Saturday.

Revenge Game Motivation

It’s not often Penn State is in a revenge situation against Maryland, but that is the case this weekend. Maryland jumpe don Penn State early last season with some big plays and the Terrapins were able to hold Penn State at bay the rest of the way as the Nittany Lions were stuck on an 0-5 start to the season.

Penn State is 1-2 in revenge games this season with a win against Indiana and losses to Iowa and Ohio State. But given Penn State’s overall series history against Maryland, there is an expectation that Penn State faces a better chance of getting revenge on Saturday. The last time Penn State visited Maryland’s campus, the Nittany Lions left with a 59-0 victory. Things likely won’t be quite that lopsided this time around.

Penn State defense forces turnovers

As we know during any game, there will be moments where the defense will have to make a play that will change the game. Penn State’s defense has been doing this all season long, even in losing efforts. The Nittany Lions should be able to create some pressure on Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailia, which could lead to some mistakes by the young quarterback. Tagovailoa was on a hot streak to start the season before running up against the Iowa defense earlier this season. Hopefully, Penn State’s defense has as good a game as Iowa did against Tagovailia.

Penn State’s passing game in sync

After a rough return against Illinois two weeks after getting knocked out by Iowa, Sean Clifford turned in an impressive performance against Ohio State last week. Although Clifford had some plays he would like to have back, Clifford’s effectiveness was the reason Penn State was even in the game against the Buckeyes. Expect Clifford to stay in rhythm against Maryland with Jahan Dotson and Parker Washington creating a dominant combo and the tight ends getting ways to be involved as well.

Bleacher Report mock draft sends Jahan Dotson to AFC West in first round

Bleacher Report’s first-round mock draft is sending Penn State WR Jahan Dotson out to the west coast

As the NFL trade deadline concludes, we saw a few trades that sparked the NFL world, like the Broncos trading their long-time franchise piece in Von Miller to the Rams. This also means that some of these mock drafts get a bit more interesting.

We have spent the past few weeks providing both draft stock updates and 2022 first round NFL mock drafts with Penn State players selected.

The past few mock drafts have been highlighted by The Draft Network. This week, we have a new outlet. Bleacher Report has created a first-round mock draft post-NFL trade deadline, and it includes one of Penn State’s top players. Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson being selected by the Los Angeles Chargers.

It’s no secret that Dotson has performed like one of the best receivers in the Big Ten this season. He is well on pace to have himself a career with the Nittany Lions.

We have seen a flurry of Penn State receivers translate well at the next level, including Allen Robinson and Chris Godwin. Dotson hopes to be the next star receiver produced from State College.

You could argue that the Chargers should look for other positions before taking a wide receiver. However, they are continuing to go young on their offense and Dotson would be a nice addition to an already productive passing game, averaging 271.9 yards per game.

The Chargers also signed wide receiver Keenan Allen to a four-year $80 million extension last year and Mike Williams is playing his way to an extension.

However, if the Chargers let Williams walk next offseason, Dotson would be a nice pickup. Sure, he will be a reliable WR1, but Dotson will flourish on an offense where he is not the primary target, or in a WR2 role. He would be a nice complementary weapon for Justin Herbert if Williams does decide to leave for free agency.

Even with an up-and-down season for Penn State, their current 2022 draft prospects have done nothing but shine, especially against tough opponents, and Dotson is one of them.

As mentioned, you could argue the Chargers going after other positions in the first round like offensive line or corner, but adding Dotson would be a nice selection, especially if the Chargers don’t want to pay two wide receivers.

Now, if Williams does stay and the Chargers still select Dotson in the first round, that is one lethal wide receiver core Herbert will have for his future.

LISTEN: How Jahan Dotson’s direct snap TD vs Ohio State sounded on TV and radio

ever wondered how a certain play sounded on TV & Radio, here is how Jahan Dotson Touchdown vs Ohio State sounded

Penn State put up a valiant effort on the road against Ohio State in Week 9, but ultimately the effort came up short of snapping a losing streak. But the game provided glimpses of a creative offensive approach that was desperately needed to keep up with the Buckeyes and would have been beneficial the week before in the nine-overtime loss to Illinois.

Jahan Dotson taking a direct snap for a touchdown was one of the key moments that showed Penn State was not going to be put away by the Buckeyes. Dotson took a direct snap with Penn State knocking on the doorstep of the end zone. After getting a key block from Tyler Warran, Dotson reached for the end zone for what would end up being a game-tying touchdown in the third quarter.

Here is how Chris Fowler called the play in the heat of the moment on the ABC broadcast…

An here is how the voice of the Nittany Lions, Steve Jones, called the moment on the Penn State radio network…

The play call was a brilliant one by offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. Penn State had become used to running plays in these situations through Tyler Warren, a third-string tight end with quarterback experience in high school, but this was the first time Penn State snapped the ball directly to Dotson and used Warren as a blocker.

The play did need to be given the Big Ten instant replay review treatment to confirm the score, and it did.

Ohio State did answer on the ensuing drive with a big play to start the drive before having to settle for a field goal to regain the lead. Ohio State never really looked back too much, although Penn State hung around and forced the Buckeyes to keep making plays.

Dotson and Penn State look to snap their three-game losing streak this week with another road game at Maryland. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on FS1.
