3 Studs and 2 Duds from Seahawks’ defeat of Eagles Week 12

A look at who stood out and who didn’t in the Seattle Seahawks sloppy win over the Philadelphia Eagles Week 12.

There are no style points in the NFL, and the Seattle Seahawks are certainly grateful for that. On Sunday the Seahawks tied a franchise record with their sixth road win of the year, remaining unbeaten away from Seattle, with a sloppy 17-9 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Not only did the Seahawks continue their winning ways on the road, they also continued their 30-year win streak in Philadelphia. The Seahawks have not lost in the City of Brotherly Love since September of 1989.

It was an ugly affair in the cold, windy Sunday afternoon, but the Seahawks walked away with an important victory to stay on pace with the rest of the NFC and keep their hopes of a division title comfortably alive. As a result, here are 3 Studs and 2 Duds from Sunday’s game.

Jarran Reed suffers sprained ankle in Seahawks win over Eagles

“Unfortunately, J. [Jarran] Reed sprained his ankle a little bit,” coach Pete Carroll confirmed after the game.

The Seattle Seahawks were without star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, but the rest of the defensive line stepped up in a big way to help lead the team to a gritty 17-9 victory.

A big part of that success up front was the performance of veteran Jarran Reed, who recorded three combined tackles and a half sack. However, he exited the game early with an ankle injury that could keep him on the shelf for a while.

“Unfortunately, J. [Jarran] Reed sprained his ankle a little bit,” coach Pete Carroll confirmed after the game.

Sprained ankle recovery times vary significantly. If Reed’s injury is a high-ankle sprain, it could take up to six weeks for him to recover, and would very possibly end his season.

However, a low ankle sprain could have a recovery time as short as a few days, which would have him back in plenty of time to play in Seattle’s Week 13 matchup against the Vikings on Monday night football.

Carroll will address the media on Monday afternoon, and a status update on Reed will likely be available at that time.

Carson Wentz has disappointing outing as Eagles fall to 5-6 after 17-9 loss to Seahawks

Carson Wentz has a disappointing outing as Eagles fall to 5-6 after 17-9 loss to Seahawks

For the first time since becoming the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Carson Wentz looked lost as the quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles during a bizarre outing against the Seattle Seahawks.

Wentz had four turnovers on the day and the Eagles offensive struggles continued as Philadelphia fell to 5-6 on the season after falling to the Seattle Seahawks 17-9.

The Eagles defense played well once again and did its part, holding their last 4 opponents to 17 points or less. Philadelphia got after Russell Wilson all afternoon, as the MVP candidate was 13-25, for 200 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Wentz played badly on Sunday, but he entered the game with most of his offensive weapons on the sidelines. The Eagles were shorthanded as right tackle Lane Johnson (concussion), running back Jordan Howard (shoulder) and wide receivers Alshon Jeffery (ankle) and Nelson Agholor (knee) were all inactive on Sunday.

Right guard Brandon Brooks (illness) left the game in the first quarter and was replaced by Halapoulivaati Vaitai.

Wentz finished the first half 10 for 16 for 62 yards and was 33 of 45, for 256 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. As a whole, the Eagles had five turnovers and looked out of sorts from the start.

The Birds will need to regroup as a trap-game against the Dolphins in Miami awaits next Sunday.

3 things to watch: Seahawks at Eagles

The Seattle Seahawks will look to earn their ninth win of the season on Sunday morning against the Eagles in Philadelphia.

The Seattle Seahawks are coming off the bye week with another tough 10:00 a.m. road game, this time in Philadelphia against a 5-5 Eagles squad.

Seattle (8-2) will have their work cut out for them in this one, the start of a brutal stretch of games they’ll need to win nearly all of if they want to have any chance of securing an NFC West title and/or a bye in the playoffs.

At this point every game matters a great deal, and this one will have plenty of exciting storylines for fans to pay attention to.

Teammates, coaches excited for Shaquem Griffin’s bigger role in defense

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Shaquem Griffin was praised by his teammates and coaches ahead of Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Shaquem Griffin got the green light in the team’s 27-24 victory against the San Francisco 49ers. He only played 14 defensive snaps, but defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. had a great deal of praise and saw major potential in him going forward.

“When the opportunities arise, that you have to really step up,” Norton told reporters Wednesday. “Griff really, he’s always shown his ability. If you watch his college tape, that’s what he did mainly, was a guy coming off the edge, having a lot of spark, doing a lot of spins. Lot of juice. So, we’re excited about where he can go with this.”

Veteran Seahawk and fellow linebacker Bobby Wagner appreciates Griffin’s ability to get to the quarterback.

“When we watched him practice, it was amazing,” Wagner said Wednesday. “His get-off, his turn, the way he was getting to the quarterback. Then, after that, when you don’t get to the quarterback, the quarterback throws the ball [away]. If you guys watch the film, him coming out of his stack and trying to make a play 10 yards downfield. You notice his energy, you notice his effort, and I feel like he’s been growing and growing.”

With Jadeveon Clowney being a game-time decision for Sunday and the rest of the Seahawks pass rush struggling, Griffin could see significant time against the Eagles. Clowney himself raved about Griffin as well.

“He does everything. I don’t ever put it past him that he can’t do anything now,” Clowney said. “He showed me so much. When he’s over there, I don’t even worry. He’s going to take care of his own. Even with one hand, he still goes out there and does his thing. I’m a big supporter and a big fan of his since I’ve been here.”

Fans may soon see if Griffin can be a significant contributor in a crucial game against Philadelphia.

Pete Carroll calls Luke Willson ‘probable-doubtful’ for Sunday

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll created a new injury designation for Luke Willson, calling him “probable-doubtful” for Sunday’s game.

The Seattle Seahawks final injury report of the week listed veteran tight end Luke Willson as doubtful, likely clearing the way for Jacob Hollister and Tyrone Swoopes to handle the tight end duties on Sunday against the Eagles in Philadelphia.

However, coach Pete Carroll wanted everyone to know that, while Willson’s official title is doubtful, he wishes he could have categorized him differently.

“We’ve got Luke listed as officially doubtful,” Carroll said. “I have him as probable doubtful. I don’t know that that’s an official category, but I just can’t go with the doubtful thing in my mind. We’ve got to say something, so we’re calling him probable doubtful on my list. We’ll see what happens.”

Carroll was quick to clarify that probable doubtful is not the same as questionable – which is how they listed Jadeveon Clowney and Neiko Thorpe – saying, “it’s a category all its own.”

“This is the first,” Carroll continued. “It’s only fitting that it’s Luke.”

Carroll’s quipping aside, it is encouraging that despite being listed as doubtful there is an unusual amount of optimism surrounding Willson’s hamstring injury.

Of course, doubtful is still not a good sign for Willson, and the Seahawks will most likely go into Sunday’s bout with two former practice squad members – Hollister and Swoopes – as the primary tight ends.

Jadeveon Clowney had treatment on hip, questionable for Week 12

Seattle Seahawks star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is questionable with a hip injury, and had off-campus treatment on Friday afternoon.

The Seattle Seahawks may be without their star defensive end, Jadeveon Clowney, on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Clowney is officially listed as questionable with a hip injury, and coach Pete Carroll revealed the star pass rusher was not at Seattle’s practice on Friday while he got treatment on his hip at another location.

“He had a little off-campus treatment today,” Carroll said on Friday. “So, we’ll see how he is on game day.”

Clowney had a monstrous game against the 49ers in Week 10, earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Not having him against an Eagles team that is missing starting tackle Lane Johnson would be a big blow for this Seattle defense.

Carroll said Clowney will meet up with the team before the game on Sunday, and they’ll work him out on the field before determining if he will be able to play.

If Clowney cannot go, the Seahawks will rely heavily on Quinton Jefferson and Rasheem Green to anchor the pass rush, with Ziggy Ansah, Shaquem Griffin and potentially rookie L.J. Collier seeing an increase in snap counts as well.

Look for an update on Clowney’s status roughly 90 minutes before Seattle takes on Philadelphia on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. PT.

Jadeveon Clowney a game time decision for Seahawks matchup vs. Eagles

Jadeveon Clowney a game-time decision for Seahawks matchup vs. Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles missed out on acquiring Jadeveon Clowney at the start of the season and they could luck up and not have to face the Seahawks vaunted pass rusher. According to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times, Clowney is a game-time decision with a hip injury.

Clowney’s situation is good news for an Eagles team that’ll be without Lane Johnson and will have rookie left tackle, Andre Dillard starting in his place.

Clowney sat out Seahawks practice for a second straight day with knee and hip injuries and reportedly had already left the facility for more treatment.
