Broncos cut 4 players to make room for XFL tryout signings and Kareem Jackson

The Broncos cut four players on Monday and officially signed safety Kareem Jackson.

The Denver Broncos are expected to officially sign two XFL players on Tuesday and they parted ways with four other players on Monday to make room for new arrivals.

The Broncos waived wide receiver Dallas Daniels, cornerback Darrious Gaines, tight Kris Leach and running back Emanuel Wilson, according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson. All four players signed with the team as college free agents after the draft.

Two of the players were cut to make room for quarterback Ben DiNucci and running back Jacques Patrick, who both agreed to terms with the team on Sunday.

Playing for the Seattle Sea Dragons, DiNucci led the XFL in passing yards (2,671) and ranked second in touchdown passes (20) this spring. Patrick ranked second in the XFL with 443 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 10 games with the San Antonio Brahmas.

A third cut was made to make room for safety Kareem Jackson, who agreed to a one-year deal last week and officially re-signed on Monday. The fourth cut was made to make room for a yet-to-be-signed player. A good guess might be pass rusher Jake Martin, who was cut last week.

At the time of this writing, Denver officially has three open spots on the 90-man offseason roster, with two of them set to go to DiNucci and Patrick. Time will tell if Martin is the third.

Broncos signing XFL RB Jacques Patrick after tryout

The Broncos are adding more depth to the backfield by signing XFL running back Jacques Patrick.

The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms on contracts with two of the three XFL players who tried out for the team this weekend.

In addition to getting a deal done with Seattle Sea Dragons quarterback Ben DiNucci, the Broncos also plan to sign San Antonio Brahmas running back Jacques Patrick, according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson.

Tomasson also reported that Denver is not expected to sign pass rusher Trent Harris, the third XFL player who tried out for the team this weekend.

Patrick (6-2, 234 pounds) will have to pass a physical on Monday before the deal can become official. The Broncos will also have to make a corresponding move to make room for Patrick on the 90-man offseason roster.

Patrick ranked second in the XFL this spring with 443 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 10 games.

After playing college football at FSU, Patrick started his professional career with the XFL’s Tampa Bay Vipers in 2020 before going on to spend time with the Bengals, 49ers, Panthers and Ravens from 2020-2022. He returned to the XFL this spring and will now get another opportunity in the NFL.

Broncos invite 2 XFL standouts to rookie minicamp

Trent Harris led the XFL with 9.5 sacks this spring. Jacques Patrick ranked second in the XFL with 443 rushing yards and 5 TDs.

The Denver Broncos will have at least 35 players in attendance for a rookie minicamp next weekend.

In addition to the five members of Denver’s draft class, the Broncos have also signed 16 undrafted free agents so far. The team has also invited at least a dozen undrafted players to try out at rookie minicamp and several veteran players will be invited as well.

We know of two veterans so far, both of whom played in the XFL this spring. The first is San Antonio Brahmas running back Jacques Patrick.

Patrick (6-2, 234 pounds) ranked second in the XFL this year with 443 rushing yards and five touchdowns. The 26-year-old running back started his pro career with the XFL’s Tampa Bay Vipers after going undrafted out of Florida State in 2019. After that, he spent time with four NFL teams before returning to the XFL this spring.

The second known XFL invite is Houston Roughnecks outside linebacker Trent Harris. The 27-year-old pass rusher led the XFL with 9.5 sacks this spring. Before that, Harris (6-2, 255 pounds) spent time with five NFL teams after going undrafted out of Miami in 2018. He recorded 1.5 sacks in 11 games with the Dolphins in 2019.

Patrick and Harris will hope to use the XFL as a launching pad for a return to the NFL. We are tracking all of Denver’s rookie minicamp invites on Broncos Wire.

Panthers sign RB Jacques Patrick, activate DE Darryl Johnson

The Panthers have added a new RB to the mix on Tuesday.

As we’ve said numerous times following his numerous injuries, Carolina Panthers star rusher Christian McCaffrey has boots that are nearly impossible to fill. But the team is going to try and do the best they can to close out the 2021 campaign.

This won’t make many, if any, waves—but the Panthers signed running back Jacques Patrick to their practice squad on Tuesday. This presumably fills an opening at the position on the team left behind by what’ll be the five-game absence of McCaffrey.

Patrick got his first taste of professional football in 2020 with the XFL. As a member of the Tampa Bay Vipers, the Orlando native and Florida State University Seminole ran for 254 yards and a pair of touchdowns over 60 attempts.

Upon the suspension of the league, the 24-year-old then moved on to the NFL in April. Patrick picked up stops with the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers between the last two seasons.

The 6-foot-3, 234-pounder will look to crack a group that presumably wants to run the ball more frequently following the departure of offensive coordinator Joe Brady. He joins Reggie Bonnafon and Spencer Brown as the current running backs on the Panthers’ practice squad.

Carolina also, in a corresponding move, released wide receiver Matt Cole and activated defensive end Darryl Johnson to the 53-man roster. Johnson, who was acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Bills this offseason, played in Weeks 3 and 4.

49ers roster moves: Cornerback and running back waived ahead of Bye

The #49ers waived a running back and a cornerback with their Bye week coming.

The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday announced a pair of moves that opened up two spots on the active roster. Cornerback Davontae Harris and running back Jaques Patrick were both placed on waivers with the Bye week coming up.

Harris was just activated off injured reserve, so there’s a chance the team tries to re-sign him to the practice squad if he clears waivers. He was with the 49ers for a short time in the preseason and made the active roster before immediately being placed on IR with a hamstring issue.

Patrick joined the 49ers before Week 3 against the Packers when they signed him off the Bengals practice squad. His two games with San Francisco yielded six offensive snaps and 18 special teams snaps. Patrick notched two carries for 12 yards in Week 4 vs. Seattle.

The 49ers anticipate getting healthier after the Bye and they may be looking to clear roster spots for when they activate players off Injured Reserve. They could also be angling to sign veterans at other positions where depth is problem.

49ers roster moves: Jacques Patrick signed, practice squad CB released

The #49ers officially have a new running back and released a cornerback from their practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday officially announced the signing of running back Jacques Patrick off the Bengals’ practice squad. The move was first reported Tuesday morning by NFL media’s Tom Pelissero. Cornerback Dee Virgin was also released from the practice squad.

There was no corresponding move necessary to add Patrick since linebacker Dre Greenlaw was placed on Injured Reserve before Sunday’s game and the 49ers didn’t add anyone right away.

With injuries to JaMycal Hasty, Elijah Mitchell and Trey Sermon in Week 2, Patrick gives them depth from a player who played in the preseason this year and has been practicing with an NFL team. That wasn’t the case for Kerryon Johnson who signed to the 49ers’ practice squad last week, or any of the trio of veterans they worked out Monday.

Patrick led the Bengals in rushing this preseason and spent all of last year on their practice squad after a five-game stint in the now-defunct XFL. He rushed for 254 yards and two touchdowns on 60 carries for the Tampa Bay Vipers. He also notched five receptions for 49 yards.

Virgin was let go from the practice squad which leaves a vacancy on the 16-man practice roster. Cornerback depth is less of a concern for San Francisco with cornerback Emmanuel Moseley expected back for Week 3. They may also want to open a practice squad spot for an additional running back or linebacker depending on their health at that position.

Report: 49ers signing RB off Bengals practice squad

The #49ers are adding a big running back off the Bengals’ practice squad.

The 49ers are adding some depth to their beat up running back group. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported San Francisco is adding former XFL running back Jacques Patrick off the Bengals’ practice squad.

Patrick, 24, stands at 6-3, 234 pounds and played his college football at Florida State. He averaged 4.9 yards per carry on 366 attempts across four years with the Seminoles.

The Tampa Bay Vipers of the XFL drafted Patrick in 2020. In five games for them he ran it 60 times for 254 yards and scored twice. He also caught five balls for 49 yards.

Cincinnati signed Patrick before the 2020 season, but he spent the year on their practice squad. He was released again this year at final cuts and re-signed to their practice squad.

With Elijah Mitchell’s status uncertain because of a shoulder issue, Trey Sermon in concussion protocol and JaMycal Hasty sidelined by a high ankle sprain, Patrick could get a legitimate shot at his first regular-season carries when the 49ers face the Packers on Sunday Night Football.

Report: Bengals waive QB Jake Dolegala, RB Jacques Patrick

The Cincinnati Bengals made two notable cuts.

[jwplayer yPpnIk01]

The Cincinnati Bengals have reportedly cut a pair of bigger names while getting the roster down to 53 players.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Bengals informed quarterback Jake Dolegala he’s one of the cuts. ESPN’s Ben Baby confirmed the team also cut running back Jacques Patrick.

The Dolegala cut is a little shocking because it comes on the heels of the team also making another cut at the position. But the reality is the coaching staff is fine with only Ryan Finley behind Joe Burrow on the depth chart — and expanded practice squad rules mean one or two quarterbacks could sit there and get called up on a weekly basis if necessary.

Patrick is also a surprising cut considering he was signed to a three-year deal this offseason. But he’s a prime practice squad candidate and long-term stash.

Bengals RB Jacques Patrick quietly had a monster training camp scrimmage

Jacques Patrick put on a show at Cincinnati Bengals training camp.

[jwplayer nVTn6rdX-ThvAeFxT]

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow torched the defense at a training camp scrimmage. Fellow first-rounder Jonah Williams has wowed onlookers too.

And so has Jacques Patrick.

For those asking “who?” upon seeing that name, fair enough. Patrick was a quiet signing by the Bengals in April, though it was pretty telling they really liked what they saw from the former XFL standout by giving him a three-year deal.

Patrick, a former Florida State star, flashed in a recent scrimmage at training camp. He had one sweep run to the left that went for a big gain and another where he broke tackles to get into the secondary. Don’t forget a touchdown, too.

The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr. illustrated some of it:

It’s a good time for the Bengals to have a breakout player at running back behind Joe Mixon after the team had to waive Rodney Anderson.

And while Patrick still has to compete with Trayveon Williams for attention behind Mixon and Giovani Bernard, it’s these types of performances in a preseason-less offseason that help players make final rosters.
