Roy Lopez says new Texans DL coach Jacques Cesaire ‘lives football’

Houston Texans defensive tackle likes new defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire, who he says “lives football.”

The Tennessee Titans added another Houston Texans assistant coach when defensive line coach Bobby King took the job as the inside linebackers coach for Houston’s AFC South rivals.

With a vacancy on new coach Lovie Smith’s staff, the Texans moved to fill the position by hiring Buffalo Bills assistant defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire.

Roy Lopez, who completed his rookie season as a sixth-round pick from Arizona, met with Cesaire recently after he was hired. Joining Lopez in welcoming Cesaire to Houston were defensive tackle Ross Blacklock and defensive end Jonathan Greenard.

“It was good because being able to bring in his mind and we were all in the same room, me, Ross, and J.G. with him and he just — at first we learned about each other and where we’re from,” Lopez told reporters on Feb. 17 as part of promoting Fiesta Gras in Galveston. “But once football got into the picture, it was a different story. He stands up and you can tell he just loves football. He lives it. Being able to play for someone like that is who you want to play with.”

The type of attitude and enthusiasm Cesaire has for football will reinforce Smith’s commitment to the game, according to Lopez.

“It’s the same thing with Lovie,” Lopez said. “You can feel when someone loves football and lives football. So, you can tell he just wants the best out of us. He wants to make us the best player we can possibly be. So, we’re looking forward to playing for him and looking forward to being able to grow every day.”

The 6-2, 318-pound defensive tackle generated 31 combined tackles, 1.0 sack, five tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, and a fumble recovery through 16 games, 15 of which he started in 2021. However, Lopez wants to build upon those numbers, not get content with them.

“I’m definitely looking forward to getting out to on the field and be able to nitpick his brain, too,” said Lopez.

Bills lose assistant D-line coach Jacques Cesaire to Texans

The Buffalo Bills’ coaching staff continues to get plucked from by other teams.

For once, it’s not by the New York Giants.

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Buffalo’s assistant defensive line coach in Jacques Cesaire will take a job with the Houston Texans. Cesaire is taking a promotion in Houston, as he was hired as their lead defensive line coach.

Cesaire, 41, held the assistant D-line role on Sean McDermott’s coaching staff with the Bills for the past two seasons. Eric Washington has been Buffalo’s head defensive line coach over that time.

Cesaire played in the NFL for 10 years with the San Diego Chargers prior to his coaching career.

The Texans named Lovie Smith as their new head coach just last week and he continues to put together his coaching staff.

Prior to that, Smith was Houston’s defensive coordinator in 2020 under former head coach David Culley.

The Bills have already lost multiple coaches this offseason, with the Giants being the ones to tab most of the others for their coaching staff. Most notably, former Buffalo offensive coordinator Brian Daboll was hired as New York’s head coach.

Report: Texans hiring Bills assistant DL coach Jacques Cesaire

The Houston Texans will hire Buffalo Bills assistant defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire as their new defensive line coach in 2022.

The Houston Texans have hired a new defensive line coach to replace Bobby King, who left for the Tennessee Titans.

According to Dan Graziano from ESPN, the Texans are hiring Buffalo Bills assistant defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire to fill King’s void and take over as the new defensive line coach.

Cesaire has been with the Bills since 2020, coaching under defensive line coach Eric Washington and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, who is a part of the same Tony Dungy coaching tree as Lovie Smith is.

Prior to joining the Bills, Cesaire coached the defensive line for the University of San Diego from 2015-19.

Cesaire played in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers from 2003-12. The 2003 undrafted free agent from Southern Connecticut State was a role player for the Chargers’ defense, collecting 217 tackles and 12.5 sacks over 109 career games.
