Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett told David Andrews this about his injury

Jacoby Brissett says David Andrews considered playing injured, before eventually deciding on season-ending surgery

New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett revealed a private conversation he had with David Andrews after hearing the news that the injured center would need shoulder surgery.

Andrews injured his shoulder in the Patriots’ Week 4 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Surgery would mean the end of Andrews’ season, and he had a hard time coming to terms with that early on. The Patriots’ offensive line has struggled this season, and Andrews was so tough that he considered delaying his surgery and playing injured.

However, Brissett helped talk the veteran offensive lineman down from that decision by encouraging him to err on the side of caution.

“It’s tough when a guy like that goes down, but he’s not going down with anything minor,” Brissett told reporters, per a team-provided video, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Adam London. “I talked to him this morning. He’s like, ‘I think I’m going to try (to play).’ I was like, ‘Dave. C’mon, man. As much as I would love you to.'”

The loss of Andrews is undoubtedly a big one for the offensive line. Yet, Brissett’s words were a strong reminder that sometimes life itself is bigger than the game of football.

Jerod Mayo has decisive QB outlook after Patriots’ blowout loss

Jerod Mayo commented on the shaky QB situation in New England

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo confirmed on Monday that Jacoby Brissett will remain the starting quarterback, one day after the team’s 30-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Brissett’s struggles in the passing attack continued for the Patriots. The veteran signal-caller went 19-of-32 passing for 168 yards, a touchdown and an interception. His 70.8 quarterback rating was his lowest of the season.

He struggled against a ferocious 49ers defensive line that recorded six sacks and 10 quarterback hits in the game. Through four games, Brissett’s 536 total passing yards rank last in the NFL, and his two passing touchdowns are tied for 29th in the league.

“Jacoby is 100% our starter,” Mayo told media members, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “He’s done a good job doing what we’ve asked. Are there a lot of plays he could do a better job? Absolutely. But I would never question his toughness, dependability and leadership style for this team. That’s what we need right now.”

One has to wonder if the Patriots will utilize rookie quarterback Drake Maye at any point during the season.

The quarterback position needs a spark for New England, but problems beyond the quarterback’s control, including injuries and the inconsistent play of the offensive line loom large.

WATCH: Jacoby Brissett connects on touchdown pass to Austin Hooper

Jacoby Brissett finally gets the Patriots in the end zone

The New England Patriots ended up taking advantage of a San Francisco 49ers special teams miscue at the beginning of the second half.

The 49ers fumbled the kickoff return, and the Patriots recovered the ball and turned it into a touchdown-scoring drive.

The drive itself took five plays, 27 yards and 2:49 off the clock. It concluded with Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett connecting on a play-action pass to tight end Austin Hooper.

Hooper put the finishing touches on the play by taking the ball into the end zone for the touchdown and cutting into the 49ers’ lead by a 20-10 margin, following the extra point.

It was Hooper’s first touchdown of the season and Brissett’s second touchdown pass.

The 49ers would respond with a touchdown following the Patriots’ possession.

So whatever excitement came from the play was short-lived. The Patriots have done well when running the ball effectively and utilizing their tight ends on short-yardage plays.

At this point, it seems like the only way they can move the ball.

Jacoby Brissett gives honest assessment of Patriots’ offensive line

Jacoby Brissett comments on the Patriots’ offensive line struggles

New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett stood up for his struggling offensive line when speaking with the media on Wednesday.

The Patriots have given up nine sacks on the season, which is the eighth-most in the NFL. They have struggled predominantly in pass protection as the unit continues to mix and match player combinations. Injuries have been the biggest issue, along with personnel problems.

Cole Strange, Sidy Sow and Vederian Lowe are starters currently rehabbing injuries. The trickle-down effect has been struggles at the quarterback position.

Brissett has only thrown for 398 yards and a touchdown this season.

The offensive line will need to perform at a higher level if the Patriots hope to compete with one of the NFL’s hardest schedules.

“It’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s coming,” Brissett said, via the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan.

On Sunday, the Patriots will take on a San Francisco 49ers’ defense that boasts All-Pro defensive players, Nick Bosa and Fred Warner. The Patriots’ offensive line will have their hands full in keeping the vaunted 49ers’ pass rush from wrecking the game.

Jerod Mayo explains why Patriots don’t plan on adding another veteran QB

The Patriots don’t feel the need to add another veteran quarterback

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo indicated the team does not plan to add a veteran quarterback at this time. He denied the possibility on Wednesday morning when speaking with media members.

The first-year head coach believes rookie Drake Maye has played well enough in practice that the team doesn’t need to sign another veteran quarterback, per CLNS Media’s Taylor Kyles.

Jacoby Brissett is currently the starting quarterback for New England. He has recorded 368 passing yards and a touchdown so far this season. Maye made his NFL debut in Thursday night’s 24-3 loss to the New York Jets. He went 4-of-8 passing for 22 yards.

This piece of news is certainly intriguing, as it could mean Maye’s development process is on schedule.

Time will tell how the Patriots plan to handle the position for the rest of the season. The good news is the team has seen enough progress to feel comfortable with what they already have in the quarterback room.

Jacoby Brissett refuses to take bait on starting QB question

Jacoby Brissett answered the one question everyone is asking like a pro

New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett will remain even-keeled if the team ultimately decides to replace him with rookie Drake Maye as the starter.

Brissett struggled in Thursday night’s 24-3 loss to the New York Jets. He went 12-of-18 on the evening, throwing for 98 yards. He has had a difficult start in the first three games of the season. He currently ranks 24th in the NFL with 368 passing yards, and he is tied for 22nd overall with one touchdown pass.

Coach Jerod Mayo initially said he didn’t know if there would be a quarterback change. When asked about those comments, Brissett had a veteran response ready at the hip.

“I’m not going to overreact to something that I didn’t hear,” said Brissett, via 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Alex Barth.

On Friday, Mayo stuck up for Brissett and reaffirmed his position that the veteran would remain the starter in New England.

The quarterback position will be one to watch for the Patriots in the coming weeks. The team needs consistency at the position, and so far, it hasn’t been there.

Brissett was signed to the team back in March with the idea that he’d serve in the bridge quarterback role for a future rookie. Now, it’s a waiting game to see exactly when he’ll pass that proverbial torch.

Patriots coach Jerod Mayo remains firm on starting QB stance

Jerod Mayo comments on the starting QB situation in New England

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo is planning to stick with quarterback Jacoby Brissett, following the team’s 24-3 loss to the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football.

Brissett struggled throughout the game going 12-of-18 passing for 98 yards. Granted, it wasn’t just the quarterback who struggled. The offensive line had a rough night overall in a game where they allowed seven sacks and 15 quarterback hits.

Brissett has 368 passing yards and a touchdown on the season. His 52.5 quarterback rating ranks 17th in the NFL.

Rookie Drake Maye was able to see action late in the fourth quarter. He went 4-of-8 passing for 22 yards on one drive. Some have wondered if the team would shift to Maye as the starter, but Mayo stuck by Brissett when speaking with the media on Friday.

“Jacoby is our quarterback until he’s not the quarterback. I thought last night he showed a lot of toughness, a lot of grit,” said Mayo, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

That toughness and grit were certainly on display as Brissett got pummeled behind the Patriots’ struggling offensive line. It has never been a question of if, but it has always been a question of when the Patriots will put the rookie quarterback under center.

Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett responds to DeMario Douglas’ frustrations

Jacoby Brissett admits he’s glad DeMario Douglas is frustrated

New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett responded to wide receiver DeMario Douglas’ frustrations following the Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Douglas did not speak to the media following Sunday’s game against the Seahawks. However, he did speak to the media on Monday, and he was clearly frustrated after having no receptions and no targets in the matchup.

Brissett had a difficult game on Sunday, recording 149 passing yards and a touchdown on the afternoon. The struggles were even more evident in the second half with him throwing for 32 total yards.

The quarterback spoke on the “WEEI Afternoon Show” and empathized with Douglas, as transcribed by Boston.com’s Conor Ryan.

“It’s the second game of the year. We’re still trying to figure out our identity and how this thing is going to play out as far as the offense. It’s a long season ahead,” said Brissett. “I told him, man, there’s 15 games left … it’s a lot of football ahead of us. Obviously, we’re still getting better as a whole, individually, as an offense. I’m glad he’s frustrated, but I’ll see how he uses the frustration the right way.”

Douglas is one of the Patriots’ most dynamic receivers. So they need Brissett to forge a connection with him on the field. The Patriots built a run-first identity over the first two games of the season.

However, they need to find more balance with the passing game as the competition gets tougher.

First half highlights: Seahawks lead 17-13 over the Patriots

First half highlights: Seahawks lead 17-13 over the Patriots

Part of the reason why the NFL remains king in this country is its inherent unpredictability, which is on full display in Foxboro, MA this morning. The Seattle Seahawks are taking on the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium, and many opined this would be a defensive slugfest.

Well, neither team is having much difficulty against either defense. After both New England and Seattle punted on their opening possessions, the fireworks have commenced.

The Patriots took their second drive of the game 60 yards in eight plays to claim an early 7-0 lead, thanks to former UW receiver Ja’Lynn Polk.

The Seahawks answered accordingly on the next drive, when Geno Smith found DK Metcalf for a wide open 56-yard touchdown.

New England regained the lead by marching 59 yards in 15 plays to kick a field goal for a 10-7 lead. However, it did not last long, as Smith similarly drove Seattle for their second touchdown drive of the morning. Getting the starting nod over the injured Kenneth Walker was Zach Charbonnet, who plunged into the end zone for his first touchdown of the season as well.

The Patriots did manage to answer somewhat, as they scored another field goal on their ensuing possession – their third straight scoring drive, aided by two needless penalties from cornerback Devon Witherspoon, to make it a 14-13 game. After forcing a punt just after the two-minute warning, New England had to punt back to Seattle with under a minute left in the first half.

Geno Smith took advantage of the final opportunity, and got the ball within Jason Myers’ range right before half, and Seattle’s Pro Bowl kicker connected from 44-yards to extend the Seahawks lead to 17-13 right before half. Interestingly, 17-13 was my final score prediction.

First half stats:

  • Geno Smith: 16-of-19, 169 yards, 1 touchdown
  • DK Metcalf: 4 receptions, 78 yards, 1 touchdown
  • Total yardage: Seahawks lead Patriots 182-165
  • Time of Possession: New England 17:53 to Seattle’s 12:07

Seahawks will get the ball to start the second half.

WATCH: Patriots rookie WR Ja’Lynn Polk scores first NFL touchdown

Ja’Lynn Polk hauls in his first NFL touchdown pass

New England Patriots rookie wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk scored the first touchdown of his NFL career on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.

The touchdown ended an eight-play, 60-yard drive that took 4:53 off the clock. It was also Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett’s first touchdown pass of the year. The score put New England in the driver’s seat of the game right out of the gates with a 7-0 first quarter lead.

Polk was able to slither his way to the back of the end zone for the score on his first catch of the afternoon. Brissett was efficient on the drive, completing all five of his passes and linking up with the rookie in the end.

It’s clear that the Patriots are not going to go away quietly, and they are fully buying into the systems on both sides of the football.
