Every Texas A&M Aggie selected in the 2023 MLB Draft

Texas A&M is the only school in the nation to have three or more players picked in every MLB Draft since 2001, marking an unmatched 22-year streak.

The 2023 MLB Draft is officially in the books, and there was no shortage of Texas A&M prospects hearing their names called over the course of the three-day event.

While no one from the Maroon and White heard their name called on Day 1, the Aggies more than made up for it with six total selections across Days 2 and 3. In the aftermath, Texas A&M has had at least two players selected in every draft since 1984, which is the longest streak in the country. The Aggies also boast the achievement of being the only school in the nation to have three or more players picked in every MLB Draft since 2001.

That 22-year streak is three years longer than the next-closest active run, which is 19 years by the Vanderbilt Commodores.

There is plenty to be excited about at the moment if you’re an Aggie baseball fan, from the home run hiring of Max Weiner as Texas A&M’s new pitching coach to the trio of Aggie signees that withdrew their name from the MLB Draft, thus joining the program in 2024. And while the departures of the six Aggies who heard their names called is bittersweet, it’s rewarding to know they will represent the Maroon and White to the fullest at the next level.

Here is the rundown of every Aggie that was selected in the 2023 MLB Draft. Congratulations to all, and of course, BTHO the majors!

Aggies First Baseman Jack Moss selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 11th round, 318th overall

The Cincinnati Reds have selected Texas A&M First Baseman Jack Moss in the 11th Round of the 2023 MLB Draft.

The fourth Aggie has been taken off the board in the 2023 MLB Draft; as the most consistent hitter in Texas A&M’s lineup, nicknamed “the professional hitter” last season, First Baseman Jack Moss has been selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 11th round, 318th overall.

Moss, who transferred to Jim Schlossnagle’s program before the 2022 season, sported a .368 batting average in two years with the team, following current Aggies hitting coach Michael Earley from Arizona State, led the 2022 Maroon and White squad offensively, hitting .380 at the plate combined with 103 hits, which is good for fifth in Texas A&M single-season history.

During the 2023 campaign, Moss led Texas A&M for the second consecutive season in batting average (.352) and hits (93) while once again performing his best when it mattered most in the postseason, earning SEC All-Tournament honors during the Aggies’ conference tournament run to the title game before falling to Vanderbilt.

Nothing is set in stone for Jack Moss after being selected, as being selected in the later round presents an opportunity for his return to the program based on his professional trajectory if returning further increases his draft stock in 2024. Either way, a significant impact on the Aggies’ 2024 roster is imminent once a decision is made.

Projecting where Aggie prospects could land in the 2023 MLB Draft

Ahead of the 2023 MLB Draft, which begins Sunday night, Texas A&M has no shortage of prospects who could hear their names called.

The 2023 MLB Draft kicks off on Sunday, July 9, and carries through Tuesday, July 11, in Seattle. This marks the second straight year that the event has coincided with the MLB All-Star Game, and it could also feature a handful of Texas A&M prospects.

Ahead of the start of Round 1 of the draft, which opens at 5 p.m. CT on Sunday, Texas A&M will have no shortage of potential prospects who could, realistically, hear their names called. Granted, the top of the draft is arguably reserved for the likes of LSU‘s Paul Skenes, Dylan Crews, and Florida‘s Wyatt Langford, who are all expected to be off the board in the top five. But once it’s all said and done, a handful of Aggies could be making their way to the big leagues next year.

Outfielders Brett Minnich and Jordan Thompson, relievers Matt Dillard (LHP) and Carson Lambert (RHP), and second baseman Austin Bost all saw their college eligibility come to a close and will look to make the jump to the majors.

Additionally, LHPs Evan Aschenbeck, Will Johnston, Brandyn Garcia, RHP Nathan Dettmer, shortstop Hunter Haas, third baseman Trevor Werner, first baseman Jack Moss, and utility Ryan Targac have a chance to become professional.

Dettmer, Haas, and Moss all made the first stop on that journey after showcasing their skills at the MLB Draft Combine last month in Phoenix.

Three Texas A&M prospects make their debut at the 2023 MLB Draft Combine

For Texas A&M’s Hunter Haas, Jack Moss, and Nathan Dettmer, the road to the draft is ramping up as they make their debut at the 2023 MLB Draft Combine.

While Texas A&M baseball may be heading into its offseason, the work ahead is just ramping up for three Aggie prospects looking to head to the majors.

Infielders Hunter Haas and Jack Moss, as well as RHP Nathan Dettmer, will represent the Maroon and White in the majors as they make the leap to the next level. The first stop on that journey is showcasing their skills at this year’s MLB Draft Combine, which is being held at Chase Field in Phoenix, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

This year’s event marks the third iteration of the draft combine, as the top 300 draft-eligible players, which are identified by MLB teams, descend upon Phoenix in order to take part in a series of medical and performance assessments. Additionally, prospects will have the opportunity to participate in a pro-style showcase workout, as well as strength and performance assessments.

The entire event runs from Tuesday, June 20 to Friday, June 23. On-field scouting workouts will run on the 20th and Wednesday the 21st.

Moss (.355) and Haas (.323) led the Aggies in batting average this season to go alongside a combined 174 hits and 114 runs. Both chipped in for a combined 184 RBIs. Haas had 10 homers on the season while Moss went yard four times.

Dettmer finished with a 6.32 ERA on the season with a 1.65 WHIP and a 1-4 record as a starter. While he managed to log 65 strikeouts, consistency on the mound proved to be an obstacle for the junior, although the same can be said for much of the Aggies’ bullpen as a whole.

Despite some of his struggles this season, Dettmer has proven to rise to the occasion when the stakes are high, so there’s a great probability that he can find his groove as he transitions to the professional level. Haas and Moss have illustrated their ability to drive in runs, so there should be no shortage of MLB clubs looking to add their talents.

The 2023 MLB Draft is planned for July 9-11 during All-Star Week in Seattle, featuring 20 rounds of coverage across the three days. Fans can tune in across ESPN and MLB Network to see where each of the three Aggies land in the majors.
