This transfer portal QB was a surprise visitor over the weekend for Florida

Wisconsin transfer quarterback Graham Mertz was a surprise visitor this weekend in the Swamp.

Florida hosted a ton of official visitors over the weekend, but one of the surprise names in town was Wisconsin transfer quarterback [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag].

A social media post revealed that Mertz was in town and Swamp247 is confirming that the former top-100 recruit was in Gainesville and will stay through Sunday. Mertz hit the transfer portal just a day before it opened on Dec. 4. Through four seasons (32 games starts in 34 games) with the Badgers, he completed 59.5% of his passes for 5,394 yards and 38 touchdowns. Mertz also threw 26 interceptions in Madison.

Reports have linked Mertz with the University of Kentucky, but his visit to Florida indicates that he has made no final decision.

Mertz would be an interesting addition to the quarterback room with Ohio State transfer [autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag] set to take over in his second year with the team and true freshman [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag] arriving in Gainesville. It wouldn’t make much sense for Mertz to leave a starting role to serve as a backup. At the very least, he’d join the team and immediately contend with Miller for the starting spot.

A four-star quarterback out of high school, there’s a lot to like from Mertz, even if he is a pro-style quarterback and Florida’s offense is better suited to run a dual-threat at signal caller.

Florida’s QB situation among biggest remaining questions in transfer portal

With Florida losing a ton of players to the portal and draft, ESPN thinks the Gators will be one of the more active teams during transfer season.

With the transfer portal officially open and players looking for new homes, the University of Florida is one of the most intriguing teams in college football’s “free agency,” according to ESPN.

The worldwide leader in sports asked its staff what the biggest remaining questions are during portal season, and Florida came up a few times. First, Florida is one of about two dozen teams vying for former Rhode Island offensive lineman [autotag]Ajani Cornelius[/autotag]. The Gators have to be an attractive landing spot for any lineman looking to prove himself in the Power Five considering the success [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag] had after following Billy Napier over from Louisiana. With two years of eligibility left, Cornelius and Florida might be a match made in heaven, but it will take some serious recruiting to make the pairing official.

The other big question asked by ESPN contributors regarding UF is which quarterback the Gators will target in the portal. Florida is pegged as the “SEC contender with the most work to do in the portal,” and a lot of that has to do with the departure of [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag]. Florida is also losing over a dozen players to the portal itself, so it only makes sense that they predicted the Gators to be one of the more active teams in the portal.

The answer under center isn’t as simple as one might think, though. [autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag] is in line for his first career start in the Las Vegas Bowl and that will almost certainly serve as an audition for next year. There’s also [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag] who is coming in as a true freshman next year, but there’s always some fear in having a freshman as the lone backup. That means Florida needs to target a quarterback with starting potential but also one that allows those other two to compete for reps.

Enter [autotag]Jeff Sims[/autotag], Georgia Tech’s dual-threat quarterback who “flashed big-play ability and could benefit from a fresh start.” Craig Haubert posited the idea of Sims to the Gators, and it seems like a decent fit. Sims would have “tempered expectations compared to some other transfer quarterbacks,” and would likely allow a good battle at the position to take place over the spring and summer. Alex Scarborough agreed with Haubert that Sims would be a “great fit in Napier’s offense.”

It certainly sounds like adding Sims would provide the perfect stop-gap between Richardson and Rashada, and Florida’s future at the position is already bright with the commitment of five-star 2024 commit [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag].

There are a lot of moving pieces to consider when making any sort of transfer portal predictions, but it feels pretty safe to say that Florida will be one of the more active teams this season starting at the highest-profile position on the field.

Billy Napier names Jack Miller III as Florida’s starting QB for Las Vegas Bowl

It’s Miller time! Billy Napier named Jack Miller III Florida’s starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Bowl.

The Florida Gators will go with [autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag] at quarterback for its bowl game against the Oregon State Beavers, according to Gators Online among other media members.

Miller spent the entirety of the 2022 regular season on the sidelines after injuring his thumb in the fall. Florida’s medical team fully cleared him just last month and now he’s going to take on the biggest workload of his career.

“Jack Miller probably three, four, five weeks ago was cleared from the thumb injury,” Napier said. He’s back. He’s been able to take reps and certainly this week in particular he’s been able to take a bunch of reps.” So, him, to go along with [autotag]Kyle Engel[/autotag], [autotag]Max Brown[/autotag] those three guys will take the majority of the reps today, tomorrow, and obviously when we get to the Oregon State prep.”

Miller spent time before the injury as Florida’s No. 2 behind [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag], but he didn’t get any in-game reps over the course of the season. Jalen Kitna served as the team’s backup, but he is no longer with the team.

Engel is a walk-on and Brown is a true freshman that was ranked a three-star recruit in high school, so Miller’s minimal experience across five appearances for Ohio State makes him the veteran of the bunch. The good news is Miller will have two weeks of high-volume practices before taking center stage on the Las Vegas strip.

Napier described Miller as “very capable” back in the fall, and he should be highly motivated in what amounts to be an audition for next year’s starting spot. Rumors have linked Florida to several transfer portal quarterbacks, but Miller could lessen the need to get an elite signal caller from the portal with a strong performance against a ranked opponent.

Social media reactions to Florida landing 5-star QB DJ Lagway

Much of Gator Nation is jumping for joy after Florida landed a commitment from its quarterback of the future, five-star dual-threat DJ Lagway.

Florida got its man on Wednesday when five-star quarterback [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag] committed to the program and solidified himself at the top of UF’s 2024 class.

Lagway’s goal is to get Florida to the No. 1 spot during the 2024 cycle, and that’s something fans are excited about. It’s the biggest commitment so far in the Billy Napier era of Gators football, and the future look incredibly bright following the announcement.

Florida is in a bit of a jam at quarterback right now with [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] headed to the NFL. Ohio State transfer [autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag] didn’t play all season after suffering a thumb injury in the spring, and the previous staff didn’t stockpile enough talent for Florida to have a clear starter behind Richardson. Incoming freshman [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag] could fight for a starting job next season, but it’s nearly impossible to predict whether he’ll be ready at this point.

Lagway’s timeline is a bit more clear. He still has another year in high school and could early enroll in the spring of 2024. Perhaps he’ll compete with Rashada (or whoever Florida brings in through the transfer portal over the next year) during the 2024 season, but he’ll definitely be ready by the time Rashada is eligible for the NFL draft. That gives Florida plenty of options moving forward at quarterback and has Gators fans feeling hopeful for the future.

Here’s what the experts and fans are saying on Twitter after the big announcement.

Gators land huge commitment from this 2024 5-star quarterback

Florida just got its quarterback of the future. DJ Lagway, a five-star, dual-threat talent, committed to the Gators over Baylor, Texas A&M and USC.

Florida landed its quarterback of the future on Wednesday. Five-star prospect [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag] committed to the Gators over Baylor, Clemson, Texas A&M and USC on ESPN2.

“The coaching staff has been amazing,” Lagway said. “Great communication. They told me they’re building something special, Coach (Billy) Napier and (offensive analyst) Coach (Ryan) O’Hara. I’m just excited to get to work.”

Lagway’s goal is to bring the No. 1 recruiting class to Gainesville and he’s ready to lead the effort and help recruit during his senior year. Florida currently has two other verbal commitments in the class of 2024 from four-star linebacker [autotag]Myles Graham[/autotag] (No. 30 overall) and four-star running back [autotag]Chauncey Bowens[/autotag].

247Sports logged a pair of crystal balls in favor of Florida ahead of the decision, and it’s easy to see why there was some confidence in Lagway choosing Florida. He wasted little time during his ceremony and exclaimed “you already know, let’s do this” as his little brother busted out the orange cap.

Florida appears to have a true leader under commitment with Lagway’s announcement out of the way and it couldn’t have come at a better time for the Gators. [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] has declared for the NFL draft after just a season as the starter and experience under center.

The hope is that Ohio State transfer [autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag] or incoming freshman [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag] will fill the gap, but Florida shouldn’t have any problems fielding a quarterback once Lagway gets in town. In fact, the timeline could allow for him to redshirt as Rashada’s understudy in 2024 or 2025 and then takeover the following season.

Lagway is ranked 24th overall in the class of 2024 on the 247Sports composite and is No. 4 among quarterbacks. On3 agrees with that assesment, ranking Lagway at No. 21 nationally and No. 3 among those at his position. ESPN lists him as the top-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the class.

Which 2023 Florida commit does ESPN think will have the biggest impact?

Florida has plenty of commits to get excited about in the 2023 class, but ESPN thinks one will have a greater impact on the program than the rest.

Florida’s incoming class of recruits has a bunch of studs in it, but there’s one player that ESPN thinks will be the most important piece: quarterback [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag].

Perhaps it’s not all that surprising that ESPN picked Rashada. He’s Florida’s top-30 ranked that flipped from in-state rival Miami, so he should be getting some hype, especially when his first commitment (to UM) send Gators fans spiraling on social media. But it’s the timing of Rashada’s arrival that makes him such a key piece for Florida.

“The Gators lost a commitment from ESPN 300 quarterback [autotag]Nick Evers[/autotag] in the 2022 class when he flipped to Oklahoma,” ESPN Staff Writer Tom VanHaaren wrote. “Napier signed three-star [autotag]Max Brown[/autotag] to fill the void of Evers, but the 6-foot-4-inch, 185-pound Rashada is a big win for the future of the program.”

VanHaaren suggests that Rashada will get a year to learn under [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag], but there are many that believe he’s headed to the draft this offseason. That accelerates the timeline and Florida doesn’t have a ton of options behind Richardson.

[autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag] was out all year recovering from a thumb injury suffered in the spring, so there’s a real chance that Rashada is competing with him for the starting job as soon as he arrives on campus. Giving Rashada a chance to learn behind Richardson is ideal, but things don’t always work out perfectly when NFL scouts are involved.

ESPN does mention Florida’s impressive defensive line class, headlined by [autotag]Kelby Collins[/autotag], but the timing of Rashada’s arrival is too impactful to deny.

Gators flip 4-star QB Jaden Rashada from Miami

The Gators shocked the world overnight and got their quarterback. Jaden Rashada has flipped his commitment from the University of Miami to the University of Florida.

In a surprise turn of events, four-star quarterback [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag] flipped his commitment from the University of Miami to the University of Florida.

Rashada committed to the Hurricanes back in June, and it was the start of a string of wins for UM that made Florida fans anxious. The Gators have since put together a top-10 class, and flipping Rashada moves them up to No. 8 on both 247Sports and On3’s team rankings for the class of 2023.

Team booster Hugh Hathcock teased a big announcement on Wednesday, and Rashada’s Thursday night/Friday morning announcement did not disappoint. Although it hasn’t been explicitly stated that Rashada got a nice NIL package, the puzzle pieces are there to put together. Hathcock is the biggest donor the football program has and Rashada posted a video of him in Hathcock’s Lamborghini to make the announcement.

Rashada’s commitment makes him the highest-rated recruit in the class of 2023 and there’s room for early playing time. If [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] departs for the NFL, which many believe he will, Rashada could compete for the starting job as a true freshman with Ohio State transfer [autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag].

Miller was the clear No. 2 to Richardson coming into the season, but his thumb injury has propelled [autotag]Jalen Kitna[/autotag] into the backup role this year. There’s also freshman [autotag]Max Brown[/autotag] to consider and incoming quarterback [autotag]Marcus Stokes[/autotag] in that race. Rashada has the right tools to make it happen, but it wouldn’t be too crazy to see him spend a year in a backup role.

The 247Sports composite ranks Rashada No. 57 overall in the class of 2023 and No. 7 among quarterbacks in the class. The On3 composite agrees with that opinion, placing him at No. 61 nationally and in the same spot among players at his position.

Rashada is now the highest-ranked recruit on Florida’s lit of verbal commitments, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see more of Miami’s commits jump ship. The Hurricanes still have commitments from the top cornerback in the class [autotag]Cormani McClain[/autotag] and the top offensive tackle in the class, [autotag]Francis Mauigoa[/autotag]. If Florida was pushing on Rashada, they are probably pushing on those two still as well.

Billy Napier impressed with backup QB Jalen Kitna’s performance against EWU

We finally got to see Jalen Kitna in action and the results were pretty impressive. Here’s what Billy Napier had to say about his second-string quarterback.

Plenty of Florida’s backups and second-teamers got noticed after Sunday’s win over Eastern Washington, but head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] took time to praise quarterback [autotag]Jalen Kitna[/autotag], specifically.

Kitna has been listed as the team’s backup since [autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag] went down with a thumb injury, but this was his first time actually seeing the field. He impressed with a pair of deep passes and ended up with 152 yards and a touchdown on 8 of 12 passing. While that kind of performance may surprise some fans, Napier has seen Kitna develop into a decent quarterback.

I’m going to tell you, the last probably two weeks, he’s really grown up a lot. You go back to training camp, probably the fourth or fifth day of training camp, he got injured, so he missed significant time. But since Jack’s injury and he started getting those twos, you’ve seen some growth there.

“All the guy does is throw completions in practice and that’s what he did today. Two Thursdays ago he was 100% completion percentage in practice. I don’t know if that’s ever been done. The guy’s a pretty smart player. He’s learned our system. For the most part, the ball went where it was supposed to go today.”

Kitna played most of the second half for the Gators, but he was called into action early when [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] went down in the first half. Richardson returned after that series, but Kitna made the most of his time on the field and found [autotag]Ricky Pearsall[/autotag] for a 22-yard gain.

“We were still in the meat of the game and I know we are trying to put the drive together and are not going to change up the game plan for any of that,” Kitna said. “I know Coach has a specific way he calls things and I know my job is to come in there and to operate the system. All the quarterbacks in the room are taught to operate that system the same way. Whoever came in, we were calling the best play for that situation. Obviously, I got that play call and ran it how we were taught.”

When Kitna returned to the game, it was smooth sailing on offense. Kitna found true freshman [autotag]Caleb Douglas[/autotag] for a 62-yard touchdown in the third quarter, but the offense eventually let off the gas after going up by nearly 50 points. Kitna didn’t mind and enjoyed leading the team to a win.

“Man, it felt good,” he said. “Obviously, being there, being prepared for my team, I got a job to do and going out there, it just kind of feels a bit like practice, it’s not too hard. We got our plays, we got our game plan, it was exactly what we saw. We were preparing for it all week. Just going out there and doing my job.”

As well as Kitna performed, Napier was cautious to label him as an elite backup. Sure, Kitna did well against an FCS program, but can Napier trust him in the fourth quarter of the Georgia game if Richardson goes down? Probably not. At least, not yet.

“Let’s be careful here,” Napier said. “We’ve been through this once before, I think. The guy completed some balls today, he also made a few mistakes today, too. The beautiful thing about today is he got to play, so he’s going to have more confidence. He’s going to be able to learn from this experience. He’s going to realize that the work he’s been doing paid off.”

Kitna might not be a stud SEC backup on the brink of transfer, but that’s not what he’s expected to be. Napier is clearly satisfied with his progress and now the kid has some reps under his belt in case an emergency does come up.

Billy Napier makes big changes to Florida’s depth chart ahead of Week 5

Trey Dean won’t play against Eastern Washington after popping up on the Gators’ injury report this week. Here’s who will start in his place.

The Florida Gators will be without safety [autotag]Trey Dean[/autotag] this week, according to the Week 5 depth chart put out by the team Wednesday evening.

Dean is listed on the injury report as “out” with a lower-body injury, and freshman [autotag]Kamari Wilson[/autotag] is in his place with [autotag]Donovan McMillon[/autotag] listed as the “OR” option. Both are expected to play against Eastern Washington, and that’s far from the only change on the depth chart.

[autotag]Justus Boone[/autotag] is listed ahead of [autotag]Princely Umanmielen[/autotag] at the defensive end spot alongside [autotag]Gervon Dexter Sr[/autotag]., and cornerback [autotag]Jaydon Hill[/autotag] is in the starting spot opposite of [autotag]Jason Marshall Jr[/autotag]. The defense will certainly look different on Sunday, and the shakeup couldn’t come at a better time.

Many fans were critical of Dean’s performance against Tennessee. He blew a few coverages that proved costly, but the truth is that the Volunteers carved up the defense in its entirety.

The front seven already has seen some movement with [autotag]Desmond Watson[/autotag] moving ahead of [autotag]Jalen Lee[/autotag] on the depth chart, and [autotag]Ventrell Miller[/autotag] is now firmly back in the starting 11 after dealing with his own lower-body injury over the past few weeks.

[autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag], [autotag]Marco Ortiz[/autotag] and [autotag]Michael Tarquin[/autotag] remain on the injury report, but Miller is now listed as “questionable,” which means he should return in the next few weeks. Offensive tackle [autotag]David Conner[/autotag] and tight end [autotag]Arlis Boardingham[/autotag] are no longer on listed on the injury report, but they aren’t on the two-deep either.

Keep in mind that Florida’s opponent this week is an FCS school. If there’s a week to rest some guys, this is it. Expect Napier to try to get some game action out of his reserves if the Gators can run the score up early.

Florida Football Depth Chart: Updates ahead of Week 4 matchup with Tennessee

Big Desmond Watson got a promotion on the depth chart after last week’s performance against USF. Here’s what else is new for Florida as the Gators prepare for the Tennessee Volunteers.

Florida’s Week 4 update to the two-deep roster had some major surprises, but it’s mostly good news for the Gators as they prepare to take on No. 11 Tennessee.

UF will go with [autotag]Desmond Watson[/autotag] as the starting nose tackle this week instead of [autotag]Jalen Lee[/autotag]. Watson had a breakout game last week and recorded his first tackle for a loss as a Gator. At 6-foot-5-inches tall and 415 pounds, Watson requires extra attention from the offensive line, and that should free up other members of the front seven.

The other main updates come from the injury report at the bottom of the depth chart. While backup quarterback [autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag] remains out with a thumb injury, Florida could be getting a pair of playmakers back this week. Cornerback [autotag]Jaydon Hill[/autotag], who hasn’t played in a game since the 2020 season, is listed as probable, and linebacker [autotag]Ventrell Miller[/autotag] should be a game-time decision after moving from “out” to “questionable.”

The defense really struggled without Miller last week, so getting him back would be huge from a leadership standpoint. Freshman [autotag]Shemar James[/autotag] is still getting the start in Miller’s place, and this will be his first road game at the collegiate level. If Miller returns, Florida stands a much better chance against Tennessee on Saturday.

Hill’s return is more certain. He’s been out for over a year and recently returned to practice. Don’t expect him to be in for the majority of the game, but he should get some snaps under his belt at some point.
