Jace Howard placed back on scholarship

After the gambit pursuits of former Michigan five-star commit Isaiah Todd and five-star target Joshua Christopher both ended up being for naught, that meant the reversal of one move made earlier in the month to free up scholarships.

Before both David DeJulius and Colin Castleton opted to enter the NCAA transfer portal, with five committed players, a strong likelihood that both Isaiah Livers and Franz Wagner could return, the Wolverines scholarship situation looked rather dicey, at best. Thus, three-star forward Jace Howard, son of head coach Juwan Howard, opted to move from being a scholarship player to a walk-on, according to a Michigan basketball spokesperson.

However, with one commit leaving and another decommitting, the maize and blue had two scholarships available following Todd’s Tuesday renege. Therefore, as first reported by The Wolverine’s Clayton Sayfie, Howard is being put back on scholarship and signed his national letter of intent on Wednesday.

Michigan Wolverines basketball three-star small forward pledge Jace Howard, son of head coach Juwan Howard, signed his national letter of intent with U-M on Wednesday, he said on Instagram live.

Howard committed to U-M on Jan. 20, and intended to sign as a scholarship player at the time. Last week however, Howard told The Wolverine that he intended on walking on for his first season in Ann Arbor.

Now the Wolverines have one open scholarship available. They could either hit up the transfer market, or, as former Michigan forward Anthony Wright surmised, per his source, the maize and blue still could be in the market for a high-level recruit.

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Report: Michigan commit to walk-on rather than sign on April 15

The Wolverines are continuing to figure out their scholarship situation heading into 2020-21.

Michigan basketball’s scholarship situation can only be described as murky, at best.

While Isaiah Livers and Franz Wagner test the NBA Draft waters, there’s a strong likelihood that one, or both, will return to Ann Arbor.

Point guard David DeJulius was announced by the program this week that he would seek a change of scenery, and entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal, which relieves Michigan of one scholarship. But Adrian Nunez is reportedly coming back next year, and the Wolverines have five commits as of current and another potentially on the way.

But, according to The Michigan Insider’s Josh Henschke and further confirmed by The Wolverine’s Chris Balas, one commit will walk-on rather than taking up a scholarship.

Three-star Miami (FL) University School small forward Jace Howard.

The Michigan Insider has learned that 2020 three-star small forward Jace Howard will walk-on to the Michigan program and will not sign with the Wolverines on April 15th. Sources close to the situation confirmed with 247Sports of the younger Howard’s intentions on Wednesday. Howard, of course, is the son of U-M head coach, Juwan Howard.

Currently, Michigan has Howard, Zeb Jackson, Terrance Williams, Hunter Dickinson and Isaiah Todd committed. However, the latter, five-star Todd, who was considering playing his year away from the NBA due to one-and-done rules overseas, recently removed all Michigan references on Twitter.

It might have seemed like a foregone conclusion to some, but legacies or coach fathers aren’t always perfect indicators.

So when 2020 Miami (FL) University School three-star Jace Howard had to make a college decision, it wasn’t necessarily a shoo-in that he would follow in his father Juwan Howard’s footsteps.

Rated by the 247Sports Composite as the 183rd-rated player in the country, regardless of position, the 18th-best player in the state of Florida and the 34th-rated small forward, Howard’s inclusion would help boost an already stellar class, headlined by five-star Isaiah Todd and four-star center Hunter Dickinson.

And on Monday night, Howard made his decision between Michigan, Princeton and Brown, ultimately choosing to indeed follow in his father’s footsteps, he announced on Twitter.

With Howard’s pledge, Michigan remains fourth in the 2020 247Sports Team Rankings.
