Celtics reportedly waive Jabari Parker; could a big be on their list of targets?

The Duke product’s tenure in Boston has come to an end, but what does the front office have in mind for his roster spot?

The Boston Celtics are reportedly waiving for No. 2 overall pick Jabari Parker according to the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach. Parker, whose current contract would have had the Celtics guarantee a significant part of his $2.7 million contract if he were still with the team once the 2021-22 NBA regular season kicks off for Boston on Oct. 20, had seemed to be trending in the right direction to stick with the team.

It seems the Celtics have other plans in mind, however, with Boston electing to save money on their tax bill instead by waiving Parker, putting themselves in a position to sign or absorb another player by keeping their 15th regular-season roster spot open.

Whether the Celtics have a specific target in mind after a number of players have shaken free from other teams finalizing their own 2021-22 rosters or the team simply values flexibility moving forward, one thing is certain — the Jabari Parker era has come to an end with the team, for better or worse.

Celtics Blog’s Keith Smith relates that ‘there has been some buzz’ about adding another big to the roster given some recent concerns regarding the availability of both Robert Williams III and Al Horford, but at present nothing concrete seems to be in the pipeline.

Celtics player grades: Boston blown out by Miami Heat in preseason finale – 10/17

Grading every player of note in Boston’s blowout preseason loss to the Miami Heat Oct. 15.

The Boston Celtics wrapped up their slate of 2020-21 NBA preseason games with a 121 – 100 blowout loss to the Miami Heat that might not mean very much in terms of regular season record or even what we can expect from the team when games do count, but there are some things to be gleaned from the player’s play on a more granular level of analysis.

With the team’s season opener against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden coming on Wednesday, Oct. 20, which players at the end of rotation helped themselves in earning a bigger role? Did anyone do enough to likely secure their position on the roster? How do we feel about the heavy-minutes players?

Let’s give some grades to those who were on the floor long enough to warrant a closer look.

With 16 guaranteed contracts, a Celtics player needs to go before opening night – but who?

One way or another, the Celtics need to shed a contract before opening night – but whose?

The Boston Celtics are making use of the league’s expanded roster limits in the offseason, which the NBA allows clubs to roster as many as 20 players until the regular season rolls around and roster size shrink to 15. Currently at 16 guaranteed players, the Celtics will need to get at least one player off their books before the 2021-22 season starts in earnest.

But who to move, and how to do it? There are at least five likely subjects on the roster at present, and there are several ways it could come together depending on how other teams view Boston’s players and what the Celtics are willing to do to make a roster spot free up.

Let’s review who might be off the team come opening night, and the more likely ways it could happen for each.

WATCH: The best of Jabari Parker in the 2020-21 season

Check out the top highlights from Jabari Parker during the 2020-21 season with the Boston Celtics.

The Boston Celtics came into the season with an inexperienced bench unit that surely needed some help. At the trade deadline, Boston acquired Evan Fournier from Orlando to be the team’s sixth-man and provide a reliable scoring punch off the bench going into the playoffs.

But, that’s not the only acquisition the Celtics made to help bolster their bench — enter Jabari Parker.

The former No. 2 pick in the 2014 NBA draft signed with the Celtics following being waived by the Sacramento Kings, who he only appeared in three games for. Through seven NBA seasons, Parker has averaged 14.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, though has struggled to find his footing since joining Sacramento in 2019.

In 10 regular season games in a Celtic uniform, Parker averaged 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game, including a season-high 18 points and 7 rebounds in the regular season finale against the New York Knicks.

Parker appeared in four of the five playoff games in the first round against the Brooklyn Nets, averaging 8.5 points and 3.8 rebounds.

It’s too soon to say if the Celtics are interested in bringing the former Duke Blue Devil back for next season but in the right role in the right system, Parker can still give you a few buckets every night.

WATCH: Jabari Parker scores 18 points, 7 rebounds vs. New York Knicks (5/16)

Parker scored a new high against the Knicks with Boston on Sunday.

Boston Celtics two way point guard Tremont Waters wasn’t the only player on the team’s roster scoring new high scores with the franchise on Sunday’s season-end finale against the New York Knicks, and while it might not have been enough to stop the Celtics from losing the contest 96 – 92, a big game off the bench from reserve forward Jabari Parker nearly helped Boston steal the win.

Parker put up 18 points to lead the Celtics in scoring along with 7 rebounds and 2 assists with 0 turnovers and 3 personal fouls in 27 minutes of play, shooting a very solid 6-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line, even hitting 1 of his 3 attempts from beyond the arc.

With an unguaranteed deal next season, the Duke product’s future is not set in stone to remain with the team beyond these upcoming postseason contests.

WATCH: Will former No. 2 pick Jabari Parker transform the Boston Celtics?

What impact will Jabari Parker have on Boston’s depth?

The Boston Celtics decided to roll the dice on former No. 2 overall 2014 NBA draft pick Jabari Parker’s upside; will it pay off, or will he be more of a supporting player for the team moving forward?

This is exactly the question asked by CLNS Media podcast hosts Jeff Goodman and Bob Ryan on a recent episode of “The Garden Report.” The duo react to Parker’s signing, and dive into what he may be able to do to bolster Boston’s depth and bench scoring. They also consider how he can help shore up the team’s wing depth with players like Evan Fournier and Jaylen Brown missing games of late.

They even broach the subject of the reported seven-year, $70 million contract that was rumored to be in the works for Celtics head coach Brad Stevens.

Celtics Lab 40: Setting expectations for Jabari Parker as a Celtics player rehab project

What can we expect from the Duke product as he teams up with Boston to try and breathe life back into his career? Do the Celtics deserve their rep as career rejuvenators?

The Boston Celtics have made something of a name for themselves as a good landing spot for players whose career has fallen short of where expectations had at one time had them pegged, with head coach Brad Stevens getting a reputation as the sort of coach able to get a little more out of such players than his peers.

Now, the team has decided to sign former No. 2 overall pick Jabari Parker to a two-year deal in the same sort of mold as we once saw for the Jordan Crawfords and Evan Turners of the league. What should we expect from Parker given how hard injuries have impacted his career, and just how real is the imagined capabilities of Boston as a potential career rejuvenator?

WATCH: Were there better free agents for Boston to sign than Jabari Parker?

Would Boston have been better off going another direction, or is this nonsense? Or is it too soon to tell?

So far, the Boston Celtics’ decision to sign former No. 2 pick of the 2014 NBA draft Jabari Parker has looked to be a wise one, with the Chicago native scoring 11 points and 4 rebounds in his first game playing for the Celtics while looking like a legitimate bench presence with upside.

Just 26 years old and widely regarded as a potential star before injuries derailed his career, Parker seems healthy and ready to contribute. But was he the best possible option out there for Boston to sign? Speaking on his eponymous CLNS Media podcast, Celtics champion forward Cedric Maxwell shared his thoughts on signing the Duke product over former Celtics liek Isaiah Thomas and Jared Sullinger to co-host Josue Pavon.

They also give their impression of Parker’s fit on the team so far, of course.

WATCH: New Celtic Jabari Parker scores 11 points, 4 boards in Boston debut

The Duke product had a very solid debut for Boston off the bench.

Former No. 2 pick in the 2014 NBA draft Jabari Parker has had some bad luck in the injury department in the past, but on Saturday night, another chance to put that behind him was underway as the Chicago native played his first game as a Boston Celtic.

Parker suited up in green and white for the first time in a home game against the Golden State Warriors, where the Duke product exceeded expectations against the smattering of attendees allowed in TD Garden. He put up a very solid 11 points and 4 rebounds in 16 minutes of playing time, shooting 5-of-6 from the floor and 1-of-2 from the free throw line.

He did not accrue any personal fouls and only turned the ball over twice, looking every bit the spark Boston needs off the bench.

While it was just one game as a Celtic, it hints that the team may have just hit a home run heading into the postseason with bringing on the forward. And after the season this team has weathered, it ought to be a much-welcomed addition.

Watch the video embedded above produced by Tomasz Kordylewski of Parker’s best plays Saturday against the Dubs.

Get to know the newest Celtic’s game better with this highlight video.

While he has seen his career take massive steps backwards after two major knee injuries, the Boston Celtics are rolling the dice on former No. 2 overall pick Jabari Parker in the hopes that the Duke product might be able to resuscitate his career with the team.

It wouldn’t be the first such resurrection under head coach Brad Stevens, who has helped stalled careers regain their spark in players like forward Evan Turner, another top pick who managed to turn his fortunes around after landing with the Celtics. With career lines of 14.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per contest to his name, the Chicago native would be a help to this team’s thin bench with only a fraction of that production coming back.

Signed to a two-year deal that keeps Boston out of the tax this season with some potential for bargain depth built-in, Parker has a shot at finding his way with the Celtics if only his body and resolve rise to the occasion.

For Boston, it’s a low-risk move that could pay off big in a way that helps balance the roster better; watch the clip embedded above provided by Tomasz Kordylewski to see how he might fit into the team’s style of play.
