Fall training camp: Chris Weinke’s analysis of J.T. Shrout

KNOXVILLE — Quarterback J.T. Shrout enters his third season at Tennessee.

The 6-foot-3, 213-pound redshirt sophomore appeared in four games and started one contest last season. Shrout finished the season going 13-for-27 through-the-air and totaled 179 passing yards and one touchdown.

During the third week of fall training camp, Tennessee’s quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke discussed Shrout ahead of the upcoming season.

“J.T. is a guy that works his tale off,” Weinke said on a Zoom call with reporters. “He studies the game. He spends extra time in here watching film. It’s important to him and that’s evident. You see that every day from this young man.

“I think the advantage now of going into that second year of this same offense with Coach (Jim) Chaney, I think all of the guys are a little more comfortable, with the exception of Harrison (Bailey) who hasn’t been in this offense.”

Weinke mentioned Shrout “is very conscious of every move that he makes.”

“Sometimes, when you get to be too careful, you start to overthink,” Weinke said. “I think he needs to continue to trust himself. I tell the guys all the time, one of the biggest things we talk about is eye discipline. Know what you’re looking at and then see what you’re looking at. They’re kind of going, ‘Well, wait a second Coach.’

“At the end of the day, J.T. can make all the throws. He throws it as good as a lot of guys I’ve been around. I think his familiarity with the offense is allowing him to operate at a much faster pace right now. We have to eliminate the mistakes and that goes for all of the quarterbacks, but I think if we can eliminate the disastrous plays, whether it’s one a practice or it’s five a practice, when we can eliminate those, you’ll see great progress at that position.”

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee is in its second week of fall training camp ahead of the 2020 season.

Jim Chaney enters his second season as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator. 2020 will be redshirt senior Jarrett Guarantano’s first campaign in his UT career in having the same offensive coordinator in back-to-back seasons.

Following six practices in fall training camp, Chaney mentioned that “without any question” Guarantano has a better understanding of the offense this year.

“That’s exactly the goal of every quarterback, is to get them to execute the offense the way we want to,” Chaney said on a Zoom call with reporters Thursday. “There’s so much subjectivity that comes into the evaluation of quarterbacks; he did this, he did that, he shouldn’t have done that. We try to eliminate that and get rid of the subjectivity and we quantify as much as we possibly can on the practice field. Every ball that comes out of their hand, it’s either on target or not, the decision is either good or not, and that’s what goes into these things.

“We have a category that sometimes is not good, that when we do something really stupid with the ball, that puts our team at risk. So far to date you can see that he’s demonstrating the importance of the ball and also understanding within our concepts, those numbers continue to rise and it’s our objective way to be able to see growth and development, and I feel real comfortable that he’s doing that right now. Are we where we need to be? No, not at all, but we got to continue to work to get better. So yes, I feel very comfortable that we should see some growth and development out of that position.”

Part of the position are backups with game experience in sophomore Brian Maurer and redshirt sophomore J.T. Shrout. The unit also consists of early enrollee freshman Harrison Bailey.

“Right now, everybody is playing football, equal reps across the board with J.T., Brian, also with Harrison,” Chaney said of the Vols’ quarterback unit behind Guarantano. “We’re giving everybody as many reps as we can. Everything is up in the air. We’re way too early to make decisions on that and coach is trying to keep us in the most competitive environments we can.

“They got to be put under the fire, we got to see how they’re going to react when things happen like that to feel comfortable with them playing. They’ll earn that two spot and that three spot and that fourth spot. Unfortunately, that’s life, somebody is going to get a little better than the other one and we’ll sort that out as the thing goes on. I feel like that’s where we’re at right now, so nothing’s cut and dry one bit. There’s competition throughout the team, but particularly at that spot.”

Sixth-year senior center Brandon Kennedy discussed Shrout and his improvement heading into the 2020 season.

“I think as far as all of the quarterbacks, and him too, as far as mental processing, I think that has went through the roof, especially with this time off,” Kennedy said of Shrout and Tennessee’s quarterback unit. “Guys have been able to watch more films and things like that.

“With him and all of the others quarterbacks in the room, I think that we have a lot more depth and also experience because a lot of guys played last year. I feel like it served him well.”

Shrout will be a significant part of the quarterback competition and rotation for Tennessee in 2020, alongside Brian Maurer, Guarantano, Harrison Bailey, Jimmy Holiday, and Kasim Hill.

Jeremy Pruitt discusses Tennessee’s quarterback competition

2020 Tennessee football.

KNOXVILLE – Tennessee opened spring practices Tuesday.

The Vols have a lot of competition at the quarterback position entering Jeremy Pruitt’s third season as Tennessee’s head coach.

Returning signal-callers include redshirt senior Jarrett Guarantano, redshirt sophomore J.T. Shrout and sophomore Brian Maurer.

Pruitt discussed the unit following Tennessee’s first spring practice.

“If you look over the last half of the year, Jarrett did a lot of really good things to help us win football games,” Pruitt said. “J.T. did some things in the South Carolina game and in the UAB game that helped us win. Brian showed some promise at times. All of these guys are going to continue to improve. We have good competition there. Jarrett is a guy that has played a lot of ball.

“When you look at all three of those guys, there are a lot of positives that they do. We have to eliminate a few mistakes that we made last year. With another year in the system, that is something that we are working on.”

Freshman early enrollees Harrison Bailey and Jimmy Holiday also enter Tennessee’s quarterback competition in 2020. They are joined by Maryland transfer Kasim Hill who did not play last season due to NCAA transfer rules.

“We have a couple other quarterbacks in that room,” Pruitt said. “Harrison Bailey, Jimmy Holiday, Kasim Hill, they are taking the same amount of reps too. We have to figure out who our first, second and third quarterback is. They will have a chance to do that throughout the spring. That’s for every position.

“In this business, you’re only as good as your last game, whether you are a coach or a player. There always needs to be competition so everyone will be at their best.”
