5 players the Chargers must re-sign in 2025

With the regular season over, we look ahead to some guys the Chargers should re-sign this upcoming offseason.

The regular season has come to an end for the Chargers, whom finished the season with an 11-6 record. Now, the attention shifts to the Texans this weekend in the wild card round.

It’s never too early to take a peak ahead to the offseason though, which could begin in as soon as a week. There are five players that the Chargers must re-sign this offseason:

LB Khalil Mack

Set to turn 34 years old in February, Mack turned in another elite season. While his age won’t demand too large of a contract, the Chargers should bring him back on a shorter-term deal with a higher annual number. He’s been elected to the Pro Bowl for the ninth time in his illustrious career, and he’s been a huge reason for the defense’s success in 2024.

RB J.K. Dobbins

Running back remains a need for this Chargers team, and they should most certainly bring Dobbins back next season. The former Raven far exceeded the $1.6 million deal that he signed last offseason. He’ll earn a nicer deal this upcoming offseason, although he still won’t be overly expensive given his injury history. Dobbins finished 2024 with a career-high 905 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.

DL Poona Ford

The Chargers’ defensive line doesn’t have any big names on the interior, but they played well all season long. Ford was the best player up front with his ability to stop the run and clog up lanes for opposing offenses. This may be the biggest priority for the Chargers, as he has been one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL in 2024. Pro Football Focus rated him as the fifth-best defensive lineman this season with a 85.1 overall grade.

CB Kristian Fulton

Add Fulton to the list of bargains that the Chargers capitalized on this season. While Fulton certainly had his low moments, he still was well worth the signing. The veteran was helpful in the run game and started 14 games for the best defense in the NFL. While he was inconsistent in coverage at times, he still made several plays with seven passes defended and an interception.

P J.K. Scott

Why not bring back both J.K.’s? The priority on Scott may not be as high as the others on this list, but he was exceptional this season. He consistently helped the Chargers flip field position, as he finished the season with 28 punts downed inside the 20-yard line.

Jags elevate 5 players from practice squad before season finale vs. Colts

Danny Etling will officially be the Jags No. 2 QB Sunday against Indy after the team elevated him and six others from the practice squad.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that they elevated six players from their practice squad Saturday for Week 18’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, and those players are as follows:

  • P Joseph Charlton
  • RB Nathan Cottrell
  • QB Danny Etling
  • WR Josh Hammond
  • OL Badara Traore
  • OL Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms

With all of the COVID-19 cases the team has endured the last few weeks (or instances that requires a player to quarantine), it was a given that they would be elevating a good amount of players for their season finale to fill out their roster. According to the team’s official site, there are nine players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list currently and a few of them are starters.

The most notable player placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list this week was backup quarterback C.J. Beathard, which explains the elevation of Danny Etling.

Punter J.K. Scott was placed on the Jags’ Reserve/COVID-19 list early in the week as well, which put the Jags in a predicament where they had to sign Joseph Charlton to the practice squad and elevate him to the active roster. The move is one that will give the Jags their second change at punter this season as the team’s original starter, Logan Cooke, was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Dec. 28 for a knee injury.

When the Jags take the field Sunday, they will also be without three offensive linemen in starters Brandon Linder and Cam Robinson, and one of their top backups on the unit in Will Richardson. That explains why the team elevated both Badara Traore and Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms, who were elevated last week as well alongside running back Nathan Cottrell.

Jags list 2 coaches as unavailable for Week 17’s game, add Griffin to Reserve/COVID-19 list

the Jags made multiple moves Friday and placing Shaquill Griffin on the Reserve/COVID-19 list was one of them.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made several moves and decisions Friday to help get them prepared for their trip to New England to take on the Patriots. Among them was the decision to list defensive Line coach Tosh Lupoi and defensive quality control coach Patrick Reilly as unavailable for Sunday’s game.

Both were deemed unavailable because of the NFL-NFLPA COVID-19 protocols, and if Lupoi is unable to make the trip, assistant defensive line coach Sterling Lucas would step in and fulfill his role for Sunday’s game.

The Jags also announced that one of their defensive team captains, Shaquill Griffin, was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. With the news being announced just after 3:45 pm EST, it appears Griffin won’t be able to play Sunday as he would need at least 48 hours to register two negative tests to take the field. That said, the Jags could turn to Nevin Lawson or Tre Herndon to play in his place Sunday.

Lastly, the Jags made two signings, adding punter J.K. Scott to the active roster from the practice squad and signing safety Bradley McDougald to the practice squad.

Scott joins the Jags after spending three seasons with the Green Bay Packers from 2018-20 where he registered 194 punts for 8,654 yards and had an average of 44.6. He was drafted by them out of Alabama in the fifth round (172nd overall) after being a two-time All-SEC specialist in 2014 and 2016.

As for McDougald, he entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013. Along the way, he’s also played for the Tampa Bay Bucs, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, and Tennessee Titans and has participated in 107 games. He’ll enter his Jags tenure with 477 career tackles, and 10 picks.
