Colts activate 3 players from COVID-19 list among slew of roster moves

The Colts made a slew of roster moves, including the activation of 3 players from the COVID-19 list.

The Indianapolis Colts activated three players from the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Friday.

The three players who remained on the list were cornerback Xavier Rhodes, defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad and offensive tackle Julién Davenport.

Rhodes and Muhammad were among the first players to be placed on the reserve list when camp opened in late July. They haven’t logged a practice to date. Davenport was put on the list a day or two after practice started at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield.

The Colts no longer have any players on the reserve/COVID-19 list as it stands.

Rhodes should be put right back in as CB1 on the boundary while Muhammad will have to compete in the defensive end room, which won’t be as easy with Ben Banogu and others showing out. Davenport is likely to join the left tackle competition alongside Will Holden and Sam Tevi.

The Colts also announced Friday that they placed wide receiver J.J. Nelson on the injured reserve list, and they waived safety Rolan Milligan and quarterback Jalen Morton.

Colts held tryout for 5 players on Monday

Colts got a look at some players on Monday.

The Indianapolis Colts held a tryout for five players on Monday, per the league’s transaction wire.

Two of those players—WR J.J. Nelson and QB Jalen Morton—were signed to reserve/futures contracts on Monday. It was also reported before the transaction wire came out that Spring League MVP Bryan Scott had a workout as well.

The two other players to work out for the Colts on Monday were wide receivers Michael Walker and John Humphrey.

The Colts can sign as many players to futures contracts as they want as long as they stay within the 90-man roster limit. That doesn’t go into effect until Feb. 8 so the players on futures contracts will remain on the reserve list.

The Indianapolis Colts worked out wide receivers J.J. Nelson and Ventell Bryant, per the league’s transaction wire on Thursday.

With T.Y. Hilton dealing with a groin injury and potentially missing the Week 9 game against the Baltimore Ravens, it seems the Colts are checking up on the market. Marcus Johnson also popped up on the injury report Thursday with a knee injury.

Nelson, 28, has appeared in 58 games throughout his career since joining the league as a fifth-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft with the Arizona Cardinals. He has recorded 85 receptions for 1,475 yards and 11 touchdowns throughout his career.

Bryant, 24, attended Temple where he would eventually sign with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2019 NFL draft. He also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys where he played 12 games in 2019. He played mostly special teams while recording one catch for 15 yards.
